Mylochromis sphaerodon, the roundtooth hap, is a deep-bodied haplochromine cichlid endemic to the southern half of Lake Malawi, where it forages along sandy inshore shallows for gastropods and other invertebrates. What makes it unusual within an already specialist group is in its teeth: the middle pharyngeal teeth carry spherical, ball-like crowns — the feature that gives the fish its name and powers a snail-crushing bite that few of its congeners can match. Rarely seen in aquaria and more often collected for the local subsistence fishery, it is one of the lake's quieter haplochromines, widespread but seldom the centre of attention.

Taxonomy & naming

Charles Tate Regan described this fish in 1922 as Haplochromis sphaerodon in his comprehensive monograph on the cichlids of Lake Nyasa — the colonial-era name for Lake Malawi — published in the Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London (1921, pt 4, p. 703, fig. 16). The Catalog of Fishes gives the type locality as Lake Malawi [Lake Nyasa] without a more specific site; no named collection point was recorded in the original description. The lectotype, designated by Eccles and Trewavas in their landmark 1989 reclassification, is BMNH 1921.9.6.147, housed in the Natural History Museum in London; a paralectotype and skeleton are registered as BMNH 1921.9.6.148.

Regan placed this and related oblique-striped fishes in the catch-all genus Haplochromis, where they remained for decades. In 1989 David Eccles and Ethelwynn Trewavas, working through the Malawian species flock systematically, erected Maravichromis for this cluster of diagonally banded haplochromines and placed Mylochromis sphaerodon there. Three years later, Derijst and Snoeks (1992) demonstrated that Maravichromis Eccles & Trewavas 1989 is a junior synonym of the older genus name Mylochromis Regan, 1920 (Cybium 16(2):173), and the species was accordingly transferred. The current authority is Mylochromis sphaerodon (Regan 1922), a name confirmed valid by Snoeks & Hanssens (2004), by Konings in his 2016 Malawi atlas (Cichlid Press), and in the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer; updated May 2026). No further synonyms are recognised.

Note on genus flag: the name Maravichromis still circulates in some older hobby literature and aquarium databases, but every current taxonomic authority — Catalog of Fishes, IUCN, FishBase, GBIF (taxon key 2372200) — treats Mylochromis as the valid genus. The Konings Cichlid Press Yearbook vol. 3 cache confirms this synonymy explicitly ("Maravichromis has subsequently been shown to be a junior synonym of Mylochromis Regan, 1920").

The species is occasionally offered in the aquarium trade under the pre-name label "Haplochromis Triaenodon Sandy Shore" (IUCN Use & Trade). This is a collector shorthand with no nomenclatural standing; the valid name is Mylochromis sphaerodon. Geographic location-variants photographed and catalogued by malawi.si include fish from Chiofu Bay, Namalenje Island, and Senga Bay, each showing slightly varying colour intensities but not differing enough to warrant separate taxonomic treatment.

Morphology

Mylochromis sphaerodon is a deep-bodied, laterally compressed cichlid with a small, rounded head and a notably small mouth relative to its body size — features that immediately separate it from the longer-snouted, wide-mouthed predatory haps that share its habitat. Sources place maximum total length at approximately 8 in, a figure given by the IUCN assessment (Konings & Kazembe 2019) and the malawi.si database; FishBase carries the older 5.5 in TL from the 1991 CLOFFA checklist, a figure that likely reflects the size range of the type material rather than full adult growth. The larger figure is more consistent with the species in the field.

The body bears an oblique diagonal stripe — the hallmark of the Mylochromis genus — running from the nape region down across the flank toward the caudal-fin base. In Mylochromis sphaerodon this stripe is narrow and solid, clearly distinguishing it from the closely related Mylochromis anaphyrmus and Mylochromis mola, which show a broader or more diffuse band. FishBase describes the body shape as fusiform (normal), but observers familiar with the fish emphasise its noticeably deep, full profile.

The diagnostic feature, visible in preserved material and reflected in the name, is the lower pharyngeal bone. Where most haps carry simple bicuspid or conical pharyngeal teeth, Mylochromis sphaerodon develops spherical, molariform crowns on the middle pharyngeal teeth — rounded like ball-bearings — creating a crushing mill capable of breaking the shells of freshwater snails. This is the feature Regan noted in 1922 and that the epithet commemorates.

Sexual dimorphism is present. Breeding males develop a blue body coloration with a yellow anal fin, as documented at Chiofu Bay and other eastern-shore localities (malawi.si photo record). Females and non-breeding males are drab, showing the oblique stripe on a plain olivaceous or tan body. The degree of colour expression varies between location variants; specimens from Senga Bay and Namalenje Island are catalogued separately by malawi.si, suggesting some regional variation in male nuptial colour.

Habitat

The species is endemic to Lake Malawi (also known as Nyasa or Niassa), the great rift-valley lake shared by Malawi, Mozambique, and Tanzania. Within the lake its range is restricted to the southern half: the IUCN defines it as extending from Kande Island south to Mangochi along the western shore, and along the eastern shore as far north as Chuanga in Mozambique. This is a band spanning roughly the lower third of the lake's length, centred on the region where the lake narrows toward its southern basin.

Its biotope is shallow sandy inshore waters at depths of 16–66 ft (roughly 15 to 65 ft), as described by the malawi.si database and the IUCN habitat entry. These are the gently sloping sandy shores — often adjacent to small deltas and inshore shallows — that rim much of the southern lake away from the rocky mbuna habitat. Unlike the rocky-shore specialists, Mylochromis sphaerodon does not require boulders or caves; it is a fish of open, bare sand where gastropods and buried invertebrates are accessible.

The lake's water chemistry in these shallow southern inshore zones is typical of Malawi as a whole: warm, clear, hard, and alkaline. Field measurements and the substantial limnological literature on the lake place the surface and near-shore water broadly at pH 7.7–8.6, temperatures 75–82 °F (75–82 °F), conductivity around 200–260 µS/cm, and total hardness in the region of 4–6 °dH — parameters any keeper should aim to replicate. Depth-specific chemistry across the lake is well documented in peer-reviewed studies including Bootsma & Hecky (1993) and Iticha & Kuraz (2020). Water temperatures in the 16–66 ft zone where this species lives are relatively stable year-round, influenced by the lake's thermal stratification and seasonal wind-driven mixing.

Feeding

Mylochromis sphaerodon is a specialised molluscivore. Its diet has been studied in greater depth than that of most of its congeners: stomach contents of specimens examined in the field have yielded abundant gastropod (snail) remains as the primary component, along with copepods, cladocerans, algae, and chironomid (midge) larva fragments (malawi.si, summarising field work). The snail material is the load-bearing datum — this is a fish that actively hunts freshwater gastropods along the sandy bottom.

The mechanism is architectural. The lower pharyngeal bone in Mylochromis sphaerodon carries large, rounded, molariform teeth — the spherical crowns that name the species — backed by powerful adductor muscles. Where most cichlids have conical pharyngeal teeth suited for gripping and crushing small prey, Mylochromis sphaerodon's rounded mill is shaped specifically for cracking snail shells: the fish takes the gastropod into the mouth, positions it on the pharyngeal bone, and crushes the shell to extract the soft tissue. This is a convergent strategy shared by various Lake Malawi haps (e.g., Mylochromis mola), Lake Victoria oral shellers documented by Seehausen (Cichlids Yearbook vol. 3), and independently evolved elsewhere in the cichlid family.

FishBase places the estimated trophic level near 3.5, consistent with an invertebrate carnivore sitting above primary consumers but below the piscivores. The occasional copepod and cladoceran in stomach contents suggest opportunistic planktonic feeding when snail density is low, but the anatomy leaves little doubt that hard-shelled invertebrates are the primary resource.

Mating

Like all haplochromine cichlids in Lake Malawi, Mylochromis sphaerodon is a maternal mouthbrooder, and the full arc of its reproductive strategy begins with male advertisement and courtship. Breeding males develop their blue-body, yellow-anal-fin coloration and move to suitable sandy substrate where they display to passing females. The spawning sequence in Malawi haplochromines typically involves the male digging a shallow sand crater or selecting a flat patch, then performing flank-display and fin-spread courtship.

Documented field observations specific to Mylochromis sphaerodon's mating behaviour are limited. The genus broadly fits the haplochromine norm of loosely territorial, non-pair-bonding males that defend a spawning site and attempt to court multiple females. The species' small mouth and rounded head suggest it does not hold large rock-based territories as some open-water predators do; instead, it is a sand-floor resident whose territory is likely modest in extent. Keepers familiar with the broader Mylochromis group note that males can show significant intraspecific aggression during breeding attempts, consistent with the genus's reputation for being livelier in temperament than the more docile sand-sifting peacocks (Aulonocara). Location-variant behaviour may differ, as Konings has noted for the genus more broadly — a point worth keeping in mind when extrapolating from one collection point's fish to another's.

Breeding

Mylochromis sphaerodon is a maternal mouthbrooder: after spawning and fertilisation, the female takes the eggs into her buccal cavity and broods them without feeding for the full incubation period, releasing free-swimming fry once they are large enough to fend for themselves. This is the universal reproductive strategy of the Malawi haplochromine flock and the mechanism behind the group's famous radiation — it sacrifices brood size for very high per-offspring survival, with each batch of fry receiving weeks of close maternal protection.

No clutch size has been published specifically for Mylochromis sphaerodon in the primary literature. For context, clutch sizes across Malawi haplochromines of comparable body size (6–8 in) typically run roughly 20–60 eggs per spawning event, with larger, older females producing larger clutches; this is a genus-typical figure from the broader haplochromine literature (Fryer & Iles 1972; Konings 1995) rather than a measured value for this species, and should be understood as such. The incubation period in Malawi haplochromines at 79–82 °F is generally three to four weeks; fry are released when they can swim and feed independently.

Aquarium breeding has been achieved — the Cichlid-Forum community has documented holding females and successful fry rearing — though Mylochromis sphaerodon is not as commonly bred in the hobby as peacocks or mbuna. Standard Malawi mouthbrooder protocol applies: give the female space to hold undisturbed, maintain stable alkaline water, and strip and raise fry artificially if aggression threatens the holding female. The species' generation length of two to three years (IUCN) and FishBase's high-resilience rating point to a productive, fast-maturing cichlid rather than a slow-breeding specialist.

In the aquarium

Mylochromis sphaerodon is rarely encountered in the hobby. It surfaces occasionally under the collector label "Haplochromis Triaenodon Sandy Shore" but is far less available than the peacocks, mbuna, or the more widely kept Copadichromis haps. Keepers who do obtain it are usually sourcing from specialist Malawi importers or fellow enthusiasts who have bred a holdover line — prospective keepers should expect a search rather than a walk to the nearest fish store.

Tank size and layout are non-negotiable starting points. This is a fish that in the wild patrols sandy inshore shallows over large areas; a 4-foot tank is a bare minimum for a single male and a couple of females, and 5–6 feet (roughly 65–105 US gal) is more realistic for a stable group. The substrate must be sand — ideally a deep layer of fine white or tan sand, at least 3–4 in deep. That depth matters: Mylochromis sphaerodon manipulates its substrate in the field and in captivity the deep sand bed both allows natural behaviour and buffers the water chemistry by releasing carbonates. A few flat rocks or scattered stones can be placed toward the back or sides to break sightlines and give subordinate fish refuge, but large areas of open sand floor should dominate the layout. Heavy planting is not appropriate and is incompatible with the alkalinity this fish requires; plastic or silk plants positioned at the margins are a workable alternative if the keeper wants some visual softening.

Water chemistry should closely match Lake Malawi conditions: pH 7.8–8.6 (targeting the middle of that range, around 8.0–8.2, is sensible), temperature 75–82 °F (75–82 °F), and hard, alkaline water — general hardness in the region of 10–20 °dGH and carbonate hardness of 6–10 °dKH are appropriate. Crushed coral or aragonite sand substrate helps maintain buffering naturally. Nitrate accumulation is the quiet killer in Malawi cichlid tanks: keep it below 20 ppm with regular water changes (25–30% weekly is a reasonable target), using water that has been pre-adjusted to the correct temperature and hardness. Do not use soft or acidic water under any circumstances; it stresses the fish and dramatically increases the risk of Malawi bloat, the protozoal-bacterial gut infection (linked to Hexamita and opportunistic flora) that kills many Malawi haps kept in sub-optimal chemistry or on overly rich foods. Avoid high-protein pelleted foods designed for carnivores; a diet of quality cichlid pellets or flakes blended with occasional hard invertebrate items (dried snails or invertebrate-based foods) is more appropriate than the shrimp or krill heavy diets that suit predatory haps.

Tankmates should come from the Lake Malawi haplochromine community, not from mbuna. The boisterous, aggressive mbuna — rockdwelling cichlids adapted to constant combat over algal territory — are a poor match temperamentally and will bully or stress a sand hap. Other mid-size, non-aggressive Malawi haps (Copadichromis, non-aggressive Protomelas, other Mylochromis) of similar body size are workable companions. Aulonocara (peacocks) often cohabit peacefully with haps in a large tank. One male of each species per tank reduces competition; multiple males of the same species will fight unless the tank is large enough for genuine territorial separation. Avoid keeping this fish with cichlids from other lake systems — the chemistry requirements and temperament are mismatched.

Breeding in captivity is achievable and has been recorded on hobbyist forums, though it is not reliably produced at scale. Males colour up to blue-and-yellow in good condition and will court females actively; spawning typically occurs on a flat patch of sand, after which the female holds the clutch. If the holding female is harassed, isolating her in a breeding net or a dedicated tank for the final week of the hold and releasing or stripping fry at around 18–21 days avoids the losses that come from a stressed female spitting early. Generalising from the broader Malawi haplochromine literature (as no published clutch counts exist for this species specifically), clutches likely run in the range of 20–50 eggs; fry are large enough at release to accept fine crushed flake or baby brine shrimp immediately. The species' primary challenge in the hobby is simply finding it — once established in appropriate conditions it is not an especially difficult cichlid, though it demands the same discipline around water quality and diet that all Malawi haps require.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Mylochromis sphaerodon as Least Concern (Konings, A. & Kazembe, J. 2019, an amended version of the 2018 assessment; date assessed 20 June 2018). The justification is straightforward: the species is endemic to Lake Malawi but is distributed across the lake's southern half without any known widespread major threats, and no population data indicate a decline. The IUCN flags two modest and ongoing concerns — subsistence fishing by local fishermen who target sandy-shore species in the southern lake, and sporadic collection for the international aquarium trade (where it has been known commercially as "Haplochromis Triaenodon Sandy Shore"). No conservation actions are presently in place, and population trend is unknown.

That Least Concern verdict is accurate but should be placed in context. Lake Malawi is under genuine and documented pressure, and the forces bearing on the lake inevitably bear on this fish. Chavula et al. (2023, Journal of Great Lakes Research) provide the most current basin-scale synthesis: the lake has warmed by roughly 33 °F in the shallow-water zone over recent decades, strengthening thermal stratification and reducing the deep mixing that recycles nutrients to surface waters and sustains productivity. Deforestation across the catchments of Malawi and Mozambique has increased sediment and nutrient loading into the near-shore shallow zones — precisely the sandy inshore habitat at 16–66 ft that Mylochromis sphaerodon occupies. Sedimentation can smother the gastropod communities that this species depends on; nutrient enrichment encourages algal blooms that degrade water clarity and alter benthic invertebrate assemblages. Over-fishing in the small-scale fishery has reduced the larger-bodied cichlids and chambo (Oreochromis karongae) in the southern lake, though whether this creates competitive release or trophic destabilisation for a snail specialist like Mylochromis sphaerodon is not known.

The honest summary: Mylochromis sphaerodon is not currently threatened, but it is a lake endemic with a restricted southern-half range, no protected habitat within its distribution, and a diet tied to a benthic resource vulnerable to sedimentation. Its long-term status is contingent on the trajectory of the lake's catchment management and the pace of warming.
