Tylochromis lateralis is a large, deep-bodied sand-sifting cichlid of the central Congo, ranging from the lower Congo just below Pool Malebo throughout the middle Congo basin to the Wagenia (Boyoma) Falls. Built around a single trade — winnowing food out of soft sediment and crushing it with a thickened pharyngeal mill — it strikes hobbyists as an African answer to the South American eartheaters: a steep-browed, large-scaled fish that works the bottom constantly and broods its young in the mother's mouth. It is one of the more widespread members of a structurally conservative, ancient African lineage that never radiated the way the rift-lake flocks did.

Taxonomy & naming

Tylochromis lateralis was named by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1898, in the first part of his "A revision of the African and Syrian fishes of the family Cichlidae" (Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London 1898, part 2: 132–152). The name has an unusual genesis: lateralis is a replacement name. Boulenger had already described the fish in 1896 as Pelmatochromis guentheri, but believing that name to be secondarily preoccupied by Hemichromis guntheri Sauvage, 1882 once both were placed in Pelmatochromis, he coined Pelmatochromis lateralis in its stead. The unique holotype (BMNH 1896.3.9.5) is held in the Natural History Museum, London, and the type locality is given as 'about 50 miles south of Mangala, probably at or near Monsembe, Middle Congo River.' A single junior synonym is recognized — Pelmatochromis lepidurus Pellegrin, 1900, described from Nganchou in the Congo and synonymized by Boulenger himself in his 1915 Catalogue of the fresh-water fishes of Africa. The species was moved to its modern genus by Melanie Stiassny, whose 1989 monograph 'A taxonomic revision of the African genus Tylochromis (Labroidei, Cichlidae)' (Annales du Musée Royal de l'Afrique Centrale 258: 1–161) reorganized the whole genus and remains the authoritative treatment; Stiassny later (1990, American Museum Novitates 2993) used Tylochromis to argue that the lineage sits near the base of the African cichlid tree, well outside the haplochromine and lamprologine assemblages. Tylochromis belongs to the subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae and its own tribe, Tylochromini.

Morphology

This is a heavy, laterally compressed cichlid with a deep body, a steeply rising forehead, and a comparatively small, low-set mouth — the unmistakable build of a benthic sediment-feeder rather than a midwater hunter. FishBase gives a maximum length of about 10 in total length, drawn from museum material; in captivity dominant males have been documented reaching roughly 12 in, with females staying nearer 8 in at the same age, so the species is realistically a 10–12 in fish. The fins carry 13–16 dorsal spines and 12–15 dorsal soft rays, three anal spines and 7–8 anal soft rays, over 28–30 vertebrae. Stiassny's diagnosis separates it from its congeners on a suite of hard-anatomy characters: 35 or fewer lateral-line scales, 17 gill-rakers along the lower limb of the first arch, a distinctively spade-shaped inferior vertebral apophysis, a lower pharyngeal jaw that is never very robust or mill-like (so the molariform crushing teeth rarely cover even half the dentigerous surface), an incompletely ossified, trough-like post-temporal laterosensory canal, and notably long pectoral fins that usually reach back to the anal fin. Coloration is a brassy, silvery-tan ground with the iridescent sheen common to the genus, and the genus's two lateral lines are part of the diagnostic toolkit. Sexual dimorphism becomes clearly visible at about 1.5–2 years of age: males grow distinctly larger and more colourful and, when dominant, develop fully by roughly three years; females remain smaller and plainer.

Habitat

Tylochromis lateralis is a Congo-basin endemic with a broad central-African range. Following Stiassny (1989), FishBase maps it from the lower Congo River just below Pool Malebo (formerly Stanley Pool) throughout the middle Congo basin up to the Wagenia Falls at Kisangani, taking in Pool Malebo itself, the Kasai drainage, the connected floodplain lakes Mai-Ndombe and Tumba, and the Ruki, Sangha and Aruwimi rivers, plus the Lindi-Tshopo; the Ubangi, although sometimes reported, is explicitly excluded from the species' range in Stiassny's revision. In FEOW terms that footprint spans the Cuvette Centrale, Lower Congo and Kasai freshwater ecoregions. This places the bulk of the population in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with the lower-Congo and Pool Malebo / Djoué shoreline extending into the Republic of the Congo on the opposite bank. It is a freshwater, benthopelagic fish of sandy and soft-bottomed habitats — river channels, the margins of the great floodplain lakes, and slack-water sandbanks — where it can work the substrate. FishBase records a narrow preferred temperature window of about 75–79 °F; hobby and aggregator sources, reflecting the wider seasonal and geographic spread of its range, report tolerance across roughly 68–86 °F, a near-neutral pH of about 6–8, and moderate hardness. Specific in-situ chemistry and depth measurements for wild populations are sparse in the literature; as a shallow-water sand-dweller it is associated with the uppermost few metres rather than deep channels.

Feeding

Like the rest of its genus, Tylochromis lateralis is a benthic macrophage — a bottom-grubbing generalist that sifts soft sediment for food. Stiassny (1989) and dietary work summarized in FishBase describe it feeding mainly on insect larvae, plant material and fruits, together with detritus and molluscs, which places it at a trophic level around 3.1, squarely that of an invertebrate-and-detritus feeder rather than a piscivore. The mechanics are those of an eartheater: the fish takes mouthfuls of fine sand, sorts the edible fraction, and expels the cleaned substrate — keepers who have kept the species note that the feeding behaviour, and indeed the whole gestalt, closely parallels the South American Geophagus, with the fish constantly sieving sand for comparatively small food particles. The thickened pharyngeal apparatus that gives the genus its name (Greek tylos, a callus or knob) lets Tylochromis crush hard-shelled prey such as snails, although in lateralis specifically the molariform dentition is comparatively modest — Stiassny notes its lower pharyngeal jaw is never very robust — so it leans more on soft invertebrates, detritus and plant matter than the genus's heavy snail-crushers like Tylochromis mylodon. In its community it functions as a sand-and-mud generalist of the river margins and floodplain lakes.

Mating

Reproduction in Tylochromis follows the African mouthbrooding template rather than the biparental cave-spawning of the Tanganyikan lamprologines, and lateralis is explicitly reported as a maternal mouthbrooder that does not form lasting pair bonds. Socially this is a polygynous, lek-like system in which the male's investment essentially ends at fertilization. Dominant males are territorial and, in the closely related Djoué/Pool Malebo form kept in aquaria, intensely so: rival dominant males cannot tolerate one another, and clashes are violent enough to end in the submission or death of the loser. Males also harry females persistently — aggression that, in the confines of a tank, can stress or kill a female that cannot escape. Courtship and spawning-site behaviour in the wild are poorly documented for this species specifically, and that gap is worth stating plainly rather than filling with assumption; what is consistent across the genus is a roving, sediment-bound forager that defends a spawning site transiently rather than holding a permanent rock or shell territory the way the rift-lake specialists do.

Breeding

Tylochromis lateralis is an ovophilous maternal mouthbrooder: the female takes the fertilized eggs into her buccal cavity and incubates and guards the developing young there alone, with no parental contribution from the male beyond fertilization. The species has been bred in captivity from wild Congo-imported stock — German aquarist Christian von Holtum raised an F1 generation, reporting that his wild fish spawned only seasonally and noting the comparison to Geophagus in both feeding and breeding behaviour. Precise clutch counts for lateralis are not well published, but the genus is characterized by the classic mouthbrooder trade-off of relatively few, large, yolky eggs that yield well-developed fry; congeners such as Tylochromis polylepis have been observed carrying on the order of 100 eggs roughly 0.5 in across, a useful genus-typical benchmark in the absence of a species-specific figure. Documented breeding parameters for the captive population are warm, near-neutral water (one successful line was maintained and bred at about pH 7 and 14 °dGH total hardness). Specific spawning triggers, incubation duration and fry-release timing for this species remain thinly documented, and the seasonal spawning of wild-caught individuals suggests environmental cues (likely tied to the flood-pulse regime of the Congo) that have not been fully characterized in the literature.

In the aquarium

Tylochromis lateralis is an uncommon, advanced aquarium fish — occasionally available as wild Congo imports or, more rarely, as tank-bred stock — and it asks for considerably more space than its eartheater good looks might suggest. This is a 10–12 in cichlid that roams and sifts the bottom constantly, so the priority is footprint, not height: a long tank with a large open floor is essential, and aggregator husbandry guidance points to roughly 160 US gal as a sensible minimum for a group of adults. The single non-negotiable furnishing is a deep bed of fine sand. These are genuine sifters that take mouthfuls of substrate, so sand lets them feed and behave naturally; coarse gravel both frustrates the behaviour and risks gill abrasion. Expect the fish to rearrange the bottom and uproot loosely planted vegetation — plan the layout around a 'builder' that remodels its territory.

Water should be warm and roughly neutral, in line with its Congo range: about 75–82 °F, pH near 6.5–7.5, and moderate hardness; the species has been kept and bred successfully around pH 7 at 14 °dGH, so it does not demand soft, acidic blackwater. Strong, well-oxygenated filtration matters more than usual here: like the rest of the genus, Tylochromis are sediment-stirrers that load the water column with detritus and are noted for poor tolerance of low oxygen, so generous mechanical filtration, brisk aeration and regular water changes are the backbone of keeping them healthy. Diet is straightforward for an omnivorous sand-sifter — a varied menu of quality sinking granules and flake, frozen white and black mosquito larvae and other invertebrates, with occasional vegetable matter, mirrors the wild diet of insect larvae, detritus, molluscs and plant material.

The real difficulty is temperament. Dominant males are territorial and ferociously intolerant of one another, and males pursue females hard; in too small a tank this readily escalates to injury or death. The practical answer is space and numbers — a large tank with a group, broken sightlines, and enough room for subordinates and harried females to retreat — rather than a single pair in close quarters. Tankmates should be robust, similarly sized, open-water or upper-level Congo-basin species (larger characins and other tolerant cichlids) that share the same warm, hard-ish, sand-floored world and won't be bullied or, conversely, won't nip a slow bottom-sifter. Following the standard rift-and-river rule, avoid mixing congeneric or visually similar sifters that could hybridize or compete for the same niche. This is a fish chosen for behaviour and rarity by an experienced keeper with a big tank, not a casual community centrepiece.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Tylochromis lateralis as Least Concern, assessed on 16 February 2009 by T. Moelants (published 2010). The rating reflects a wide distribution across the central Congo basin and no evidence of a significant population-level threat; the species carries no CITES or CMS listing and is harmless to humans. It is taken locally as a food fish within its range — FishBase notes, with characteristic candour, that it is said to taste like Nile perch — but at a scale the assessment does not flag as a concern, and its life-history profile (high resilience, low fishing vulnerability) is that of a robust, fast-recovering generalist. As with the rest of the genus, the honest framing is that the individual species is secure while the basin it depends on is under mounting pressure: deforestation, sedimentation, artisanal and industrial mining (and associated pollution), unregulated fishing and the prospect of large dams are all reshaping Congo-basin freshwaters, and the great floodplain lakes such as Mai-Ndombe and Tumba that anchor part of this fish's range are sensitive to land-use change in their catchments. None of these is documented as a present danger to Tylochromis lateralis in particular, but they are the backdrop against which its continued security should be read.
