Taxonomy & naming
The species was described by the British ichthyologist Ethelwynn Trewavas in her landmark 1935 synopsis of the cichlid fishes of Lake Nyasa (as the lake was then known internationally), published in the Annals and Magazine of Natural History. She placed it in the collective genus Haplochromis under the name Haplochromis phenochilus, choosing an epithet that translates from the Greek as 'conspicuous lips' — a reference to the unusual white colouration of the snout and lips, which Trewavas noted were 'conspicuous by their pallor.' The holotype was collected from Vua, a shoreline village in what is now Karonga District in the Northern Region of Malawi, at the lake's northwestern extremity. The species remained in Haplochromis through most of its taxonomic history, passing through the name Cyrtocara phenochilus (used for a period when Malawi haplochromines were broadly shuffled into Cyrtocara) before finding its current placement in Placidochromis. That genus was diagnosed by Eccles and Trewavas (1989) in their reclassification of Malawian haplochromine genera; placement of phenochilus there rests chiefly on its close morphological resemblance to the better-known Deepwater Hap, Placidochromis electra. Konings (Cichlids Yearbook vol. 1) noted that this resemblance is the basis for its genus assignment and flagged that a future revision might reappraise the grouping. The trade and hobby world complicates the taxonomy: a Tanzanian form sold as 'Star Sapphire' or 'Phenochilus Tanzania' — formally Placidochromis sp. 'phenochilus tanzania' — is a related but distinct, undescribed species from the eastern Tanzanian shore between Makonde and Lupingu. That fish, characterised by metallic white blotching across a blue body, lacks the diagnostic white lips of true phenochilus and should not be confused with it. The name 'Mdoka White Lips,' by contrast, refers specifically to Placidochromis phenochilus from Mdoka Reef on the Malawian northwestern shore, and is the form correctly sold under the species name.
Morphology
Placidochromis phenochilus reaches a maximum recorded length of 6 in TL according to FishBase (van Oijen et al. 1991); malawi.si notes that imported males typically measure 4.5–6 in TL and may exceed 8 in TL under long-term aquarium conditions. The body is moderately deep and laterally compressed in the typical haplochromine mould. The most immediately striking feature is the snout: the lips are distinctly pale, whitish to cream, contrasting with the rest of the head. Body colouration in adult males is a continuous, saturated cobalt blue; even juveniles of 2.5 in show the characteristic dark blue that makes the species stand out against the sand (Konings, Cichlids Yearbook vol. 1). Vertical barring is faintly present in most individuals but is not diagnostically useful because it is shared with many other genera and is especially pronounced in courting males. Sexual dimorphism is expressed in size and finnage rather than colour: males grow larger and develop longer fins and a somewhat more pronounced jaw; older females may lose the intense blue and become pale, and females generally retain a more subdued coloration throughout. Notably, sexual dichromatism is absent — there is no divergence in colour pattern between sexes of the kind common in other Malawian haplochromines, which is an unusual feature for the subfamily. The resemblance to Placidochromis electra is substantial, and in the field or in mixed-lot importations the two species require attention to lip colouration to separate them reliably.
Habitat
Placidochromis phenochilus is endemic to Lake Malawi and has a restricted range confined to the northwestern portion of the lake. Known localities documented by Konings (Cichlids Yearbook vol. 1) include Mdoka, Chesese, Chirwa Island, and the stretch between Selewa and Kasinda — all in Malawian waters. The species has not been reliably documented from Tanzanian shores, where the separate Placidochromis sp. 'phenochilus tanzania' occurs. Konings noted that phenochilus stands out within the wider blue sand-dweller guild for exactly this restriction: the guild's other members — Cyrtocara moorii, Protomelas annectens and Otopharynx selenurus — range lake-wide, while phenochilus (and its close relative Placidochromis electra) are each confined to one shoreline. The type locality, Vua (Karonga District, Malawi), lies at approximately 10.27°S, 34.13°E on the western shoreline of the lake's northern basin. The habitat is sandy substrate at moderately deep levels: Konings observed that Placidochromis phenochilus and Placidochromis electra are typically found in water deeper than 49 ft, in contrast to some other members of the blue-sand-dweller guild (Cyrtocara moorii, Otopharynx selenurus) that occur in shallower water. Most aquarium specimens collected commercially originate from Mdoka Reef. Lake Malawi's surface water maintains pH in the range of roughly 7.8–8.6 and temperatures of approximately 75–82 °F in the nearshore zone, with deeper sandy areas slightly cooler; no dedicated in-situ measurements for the Mdoka sand zone at >49 ft depth are published for this species specifically.
Feeding
Placidochromis phenochilus belongs to an ecologically distinctive guild of conspicuously coloured sand-dwelling cichlids that exploit the feeding activity of larger sand-sifting species rather than excavating the substrate themselves. Konings (Cichlids Yearbook vol. 1) described the mechanism in detail: the principal host in the Malawi system is Taeniolethrinops preaorbitalis, a large haplochromine whose continuous ploughing through the sand creates clouds of displaced material and exposes invertebrates that had been sheltered beneath the surface. Placidochromis phenochilus hovers near the digging fish and collects the small invertebrates — chironomid larvae, ostracods, and other benthic invertebrates — as they are turned up. Konings noted that although the followers appear to be selecting particles from the disturbed water column, they are in fact more interested in hunting the invertebrates directly in the freshly turned sand. The conspicuous blue colouration of Placidochromis phenochilus and its guild-mates may function as an interspecific territorial signal to other potential followers, advertising that the host is 'taken' and reducing competition around a valuable food source. In the aquarium the species readily accepts small frozen foods such as Artemia and Cyclops and high-quality dry foods; it is not a fussy feeder under captive conditions.
Mating
Outside the breeding period, Placidochromis phenochilus is a relatively peaceful, loosely social fish that typically moves singly or in very small groups across the sand — consistent with its dependency on a relatively rare, mobile host species rather than a structured schooling life. Males establish temporary territories during courtship and engage in lateral displays and occasional mouth-wrestling contests with rivals. Because the species closely resembles Placidochromis electra, and Placidochromis electra is a well-documented aquarium breeder, its mating system is inferred to be similar — Konings speculated that egg fertilisation in Placidochromis phenochilus occurs inside the female's mouth as is typical for Malawian maternal mouthbrooders, in contrast to the open-sand fertilisation seen in some other members of the sand-dweller guild such as Cyrtocara moorii and Protomelas annectens. Males are reported from aquarium observations to excavate a small spawning pit in the sand and court females with sweeping fin displays before spawning commences (malawi.si; Borstein 2011). Intraspecific aggression between males exists but is described by hobbyists as manageable and rarely causing serious damage.
Breeding
Placidochromis phenochilus is a maternal mouthbrooder. The female collects the eggs at spawning and incubates them in the buccal cavity; no paternal care is involved beyond the male's defence of the spawning site. At aquarium temperatures around 77 °F, incubation takes approximately three weeks, after which the fry are released gradually as the female perceives the environment to be safe (malawi.si). The fry are relatively large and straightforward to raise on baby brine shrimp or finely crushed food. Clutch size per spawn is modest — Borstein (2011), working with the closely related Placidochromis sp. 'phenochilus tanzania' under comparable aquarium conditions, reported 20–50 fry per spawn depending on female age and size, and the same range is expected for Placidochromis phenochilus based on the similarity of the two forms. Holding females can be difficult to identify visually because the buccal distension is less pronounced than in some other Malawi cichlids; behavioural signs (cessation of feeding, characteristic chewing movements of the mouth) are more reliable indicators. The species typically begins breeding at around four inches (roughly 4 in) total length. Wild spawning has not been directly observed; Konings noted that he had not witnessed courtship in the field, but the pattern inferred from aquarium experience and comparison with Placidochromis electra suggests a substrate-linked spawning above open sand.
In the aquarium
Placidochromis phenochilus is a moderately straightforward Lake Malawi cichlid to keep and is well within reach of an intermediate aquarist with experience of Rift Valley conditions. A single male with two or three females requires a minimum of around 80 US gal; the tank footprint matters more than the volume — a long, low aquarium of 59 in or more suits the species' habit of patrolling open ground. Males can run to 8 in or more in established captivity, and they need the horizontal space. Substrate should be fine to medium silica or aragonite sand — a depth of 2–3 in satisfies the fish's instinct to sift — with rock formations arranged around the perimeter and back to break sightlines and provide refuge for females retreating from a persistent male. Leave the central zone open and uncluttered.
Water chemistry should match the hard, alkaline conditions of Lake Malawi's northern basin: pH 7.8–8.6, temperature 75–82 °F, and general hardness at the harder end of the soft-water spectrum (typically 10–20°dH using a Rift Valley salt mix or similar). Biological filtration must be efficient — Malawi cichlids are sensitive to nitrogenous waste, and high protein diets amplify that demand. Large, regular water changes (30–40% weekly) are not optional; deteriorating water quality is the most common proximate cause of the disease hobbyists call 'Malawi bloat' (a collective term for rapidly progressive abdominal oedema and internal infection, often involving Spironucleus or opportunistic bacteria). Feeding a high-vegetable, low-fat staple supplemented by small invertebrate-based frozen foods — Cyclops, Mysis, finely chopped krill — and minimising oily or high-protein pellets substantially reduces bloat risk. Despite its invertivore ecology in the wild, phenochilus does not require live or frozen food to thrive; quality cichlid pellets or flakes with a spirulina component serve as a serviceable base.
Compatibility is one of the species' genuine strengths. Placidochromis phenochilus is consistently described by keepers as among the more peaceable large haplochromines: males display and posture but do not typically pursue tankmates to the point of mutilation in a correctly stocked tank. Suitable companions are other peaceful Lake Malawi haplochromines (mid-sized Placidochromis species, Copadichromis, Otopharynx) and peacocks (Aulonocara spp.) of comparable size. Avoid pairing with aggressive or territory-dominant haps such as large Dimidiochromis or Nimbochromis, which will stress or injure the more passive phenochilus. Mbuna cichlids are generally unsuitable: their faster, more aggressive feeding style and tendency toward territorial harassment are incompatible with phenochilus's calmer pace, and mbuna tend to introduce high dietary protein that predisposes the whole tank to bloat. A species-only setup — one male to several females — is also a practical and rewarding option.
Breeding in captivity is achievable without specialist intervention. Once a male reaches sexual maturity (typically at around 4–4.5 in) and is well conditioned, he will court actively: digging a shallow pit in the sand, fanning the substrate, and displaying his blue flanks to females. The female is a maternal mouthbrooder — she collects the eggs immediately at spawning and incubates them for roughly three weeks at 77–81 °F. Brooding females are best left undisturbed; stripping early is possible if the female is clearly being harassed, but in a well-planted or well-rockscaped aquarium females generally manage the full hold without intervention. Fry are released at a substantial size and readily accept baby brine shrimp or finely powdered fry food; survival rates are high compared to many other Malawi cichlids. The main keeper mistake at this stage is leaving the female in the main display without a refuge — a dominant male will court her again within days of release, and repeated back-to-back spawning without recovery time depletes the female rapidly.
Two other recurring mistakes are worth flagging. First, confusion between the true Placidochromis phenochilus ('Mdoka White Lips') and the Tanzanian 'Star Sapphire' form (Placidochromis sp. 'phenochilus tanzania') means many aquarists are keeping and even crossing the two — the latter is more commonly available in the trade at present. The star-sapphire form is slightly larger, has metallic white spangling rather than white lips, and is not Placidochromis phenochilus; experienced hobbyists treat them as distinct forms and do not mix them. Second, phenochilus is a specialist invertivore in the wild and finds substrate-sifting stimulating in captivity; a bare-bottomed or small-gravel tank frustrates the animal and leads to chronic low-level stress. Deep fine sand is not merely decorative — it is functional enrichment for this species.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Placidochromis phenochilus as Endangered (EN; criteria A2a; B2ab(v)) in May 2018, with Ad Konings as the assessor. The criteria signal both a suspected population decline and a restricted extent of occurrence: the species is known only from a limited stretch of the northwestern Malawian shoreline, and the holotype locality, Vua, has been cited as its only confirmed occurrence in the primary literature. The restricted geographic range leaves it exposed to any habitat deterioration in the northwestern basin — sedimentation from deforestation in the Karonga catchment, artisanal fishing pressure on sandy shelf habitats, and the broader threats that face Lake Malawi's cichlid fauna as a whole. Lake Malawi's cichlid flock faces systemic pressure: Chavula et al. (2023) and the scientific literature on the lake document accelerating catchment degradation, increased turbidity and nutrient loading from agriculture and shoreline development, and the effects of climate-driven warming on stratification and deep-water oxygen. For a species whose documented distribution spans only a few tens of kilometres of sandy shoreline deeper than 49 ft, these pressures are not abstract. The export trade in the related 'Star Sapphire' (Placidochromis sp. 'phenochilus tanzania') from Tanzanian waters has been commercially active, but trade in true Placidochromis phenochilus from the Malawian northwest is historically limited — Konings noted in Cichlids Yearbook vol. 1 that the species had not yet been exported as an aquarium fish at the time of writing. Whatever collection now occurs at Mdoka should be considered in the context of a fish with an already restricted and likely declining range. The Endangered listing warrants continued monitoring of the Mdoka and Chesese populations.
