Protomelas insignis is a mid-sized haplochromine cichlid endemic to Lake Malawi with a behavioral habit that sets it apart from nearly every other hap in the lake: it makes its living stealing eggs. Rather than grazing algae or sifting sand, it cruises above rocky breeding arenas, watching the spawning activity of other cichlids, and darts in at precisely the right moment to snatch freshly laid eggs before the mouthbrooding female can collect them. This specialization has shaped everything about the fish — its body plan, its hunting patience, and its comparative rarity across a lake that holds hundreds of other cichlid species.

Taxonomy & naming

Protomelas insignis was described by Ethelwynn Trewavas in 1935 in her landmark synopsis of the cichlid fishes of Lake Nyasa, published in the Annals and Magazine of Natural History (Series 10, volume 16, pp. 65–118). The original combination was Haplochromis insignis — a catch-all genus into which Trewavas placed most of the lake's haplochromine cichlids at the time. Trewavas collected the type series from Monkey Bay, in the southern arm of Lake Malawi, the same collecting trip that produced many of the species her 1935 paper described. The lectotype (BMNH 1935.6.14.839) and four paralectotypes (BMNH 1935.6.14.840–843) are held at the Natural History Museum, London; the lectotype designation was formalized by Eccles and Trewavas in their 1989 monograph Malawian Cichlid Fishes: The Classification of Some Haplochromine Genera (Lake Fish Movies, Herten). That same 1989 work transferred the species to the newly erected genus Protomelas Eccles & Trewavas 1989, along with a dozen or so congeners that share a roughly similar body plan and plesiomorphic melanin pattern. The genus has been validated in every subsequent treatment: Maréchal (1991) in CLOFFA volume 4, M. K. Oliver's malawi.si Malawi cichlid database, and Konings' Malawi Cichlids in their Natural Habitat (Cichlid Press, 2016 edition, p. 270).

Within Protomelas the species sits uneasily: it does not belong to the well-known taeniolatus complex of algae-scrapers, nor to the annectens–ornatus group of sand-associated followers. Its egg-robbing habit allies it behaviorally with Caprichromis and, more closely, with the recently described Protomelas krampus Dierickx & Snoeks 2020, but morphologically it is distinguished from most congeners by having only one inner tooth row, a shorter premaxillary pedicel, and a lower gill-raker count than Protomelas spilonotus, the most similar-looking species. No synonyms are recorded; the species has remained nomenclaturally stable since 1989. The common name "one-and-a-half-stripe hap" refers to its diagnostic pattern of two partial horizontal stripes — one mid-lateral stripe beginning five to six scales behind the gill cover, and one dorso-lateral stripe that ends halfway along the flank — rather than running the full length of the body.

Morphology

Protomelas insignis is a moderately elongate, laterally compressed haplochromine with the fusiform body typical of the genus. FishBase lists a maximum total length of 8 in for males; the IUCN assessment gives a maximum of 7 in TL; and malawi.si reports that males reach up to 8.5 in while females attain only about 5 in — a figure that probably captures genuine geographic and individual variation. The species is firmly a large hap by lake standards, and males substantially outgrow females.

The diagnostic feature is the melanin pattern that gives the fish its common name: a mid-lateral stripe starting noticeably behind the pectoral insertion rather than at the snout, and a dorso-lateral stripe that fades out at roughly the midpoint of the flank. This "one-and-a-half" pattern of incomplete stripes — prominent in the posterior half of the body — distinguishes insignis from close relatives in which either both stripes run the full length or the pattern is otherwise arranged. The distinction from Protomelas spilonotus in the field rests on these abbreviated stripes and on the lower gill-raker count (confirmed in Trewavas 1935 and restated by FishBase). The meristics from Trewavas (1935) and FishBase: dorsal XVII–XVIII, 10–11; anal III, 9–10; 32 vertebrae; body shape fusiform, cross-section compressed.

Sexual dimorphism is pronounced. Breeding males develop intense blue coloration, often with a white dorsal-fin blaze; the specific pattern varies by locality — malawi.si records males from Nakantenga as blue with a white blaze from dorsal down the head, while Likoma males are blue throughout. Females and non-breeding males retain the cryptic, brownish melanin-stripe pattern and are much smaller. The relatively large mouth, compared with other Protomelas, is an adaptation to the egg-robbing feeding mode rather than to algae-scraping or sand-sifting.

Habitat

Protomelas insignis has a lake-wide distribution in Lake Malawi, occurring across the Malawian, Mozambican, and Tanzanian sectors of the lake, but it is described consistently as uncommon — seen sporadically rather than in the concentrations typical of, say, Copadichromis utaka or the more abundant Protomelas species. The IUCN assessment confirms "Endemic to Lake Malawi with a lake-wide distribution" and reports an estimated area of occupancy of 1,137 mi² and extent of occurrence of 29,373 mi². The FishBase latitudinal range of 12°S–15°S brackets roughly the full north-to-south extent of the lake.

In terms of biotope, the species is closely tied to rocky reefs cleared of sediment. According to malawi.si (based on Konings' field observations), it is primarily found swimming 7–10 ft above the rocks in open water — well off the bottom rather than hugging the substrate. Breeding sites are constructed in intermediate habitats, in the transition zone between the open rock and adjacent sand. This open-water stance above rocky reefs is consistent with its foraging strategy: a fish watching breeding activity below needs elevation to survey the area and dart in quickly.

The water chemistry is that of Lake Malawi generally — warm, clear, and strongly alkaline. In-situ measurements from the relevant depth range of Lake Malawi yield temperatures of approximately 75–82 °F, pH 7.7–8.6, and conductivity around 210–230 µS/cm (Guildford et al. 2007; Chavula et al. 2023). FishBase records the species as benthopelagic in tropical, freshwater conditions; no species-specific depth data are published, but the habitat of 7–10 ft above open rock reefs implies a typical working depth in the upper 16–49 ft of the lake.

Feeding

The trophic specialization of Protomelas insignis is one of the most precisely described in the lake: it is a specialized egg-robber (paedophage in the broad sense, though it primarily targets eggs rather than larvae). FishBase states simply that it "feeds on eggs" (Ref. 5595), and the IUCN habitat-and-ecology account elaborates: the species feeds on eggs that it steals from other spawning cichlids, working the breeding arenas of whatever haplochromine species happens to be spawning on the rocky substrate below it.

malawi.si provides the field detail: Protomelas insignis patrols breeding arenas of other cichlids and waits at distances often exceeding one meter before darting in to snatch freshly laid eggs from the spawning site. It may operate singly or in small groups above rocky habitats. The timing matters: the fish must strike after the female has laid a batch but before she has collected the eggs into her mouth — a window of seconds. This foraging strategy requires spatial memory of where breeding cichlids are active, patience at distance, and accurate high-speed interception.

This egg diet places the species at a low trophic level (FishBase gives approximately 2.5), since cichlid eggs represent a relatively concentrated, high-quality food item. The comparatively large mouth of Protomelas insignis, noted in FishBase's diagnosis, facilitates egg ingestion compared with the smaller-mouthed algae-grazers. The species is frequently associated with Otopharynx ovatus in southern Malawi breeding arenas, where multiple egg-robbing species exploit the same aggregations.

Mating

Like all haplochromines of Lake Malawi, Protomelas insignis is polygynous. Males in breeding dress are intensely territorial around their constructed spawning sites, which malawi.si describes as cave-crater structures — a pit or crater excavated in intermediate habitat, typically at the edge between rock and sand. Males in full nuptial color are highly conspicuous over their territories, especially against the rocky bottom, and will defend the site aggressively against rival males.

Ripe females, which turn markedly dark grey rather than taking on male-like blue coloration, are detected by the territorial male and led or courted to the spawning site. The darkening of brooding females in this species is notable enough to be mentioned specifically in field accounts, and it appears to be a signal of receptive or near-brooding condition. Female insignis do not form permanent pair bonds; each female moves through the rocky habitat, potentially visiting multiple male territories within a breeding season. The scarcity of the species in most locations means that territorial males are not packed tightly — unlike the dense lek aggregations of some Copadichromis or Aulonocara species, Protomelas insignis males likely maintain comparatively large individual territories.

Breeding

Protomelas insignis is a maternal mouthbrooder, as confirmed by FishBase and consistent with all other Lake Malawi haplochromines. After spawning at the male's cave-crater site, the female collects the eggs into her buccal cavity. Fertilization follows the typical haplochromine pattern: the male displays egg-spots on his anal fin, and while the female attempts to gather these false eggs, she inhales milt and fertilizes the clutch already in her mouth.

malawi.si notes that females mouthbrood and continue guarding the fry for several weeks after release — an extended maternal-care phase that extends beyond the brooding period itself. This post-release guarding, with the mother remaining with and protecting the free-swimming fry before they fully disperse, is documented in a number of Malawi haplochromines but not universal in the genus. Clutch sizes for the species are not formally documented in the published literature; a genus-typical figure based on body size and FishBase fecundity data for similarly sized Protomelas suggests several dozen eggs per spawning event, consistent with the small but viable broods of Malawi maternal mouthbrooders of this size class. The total brooding period, from spawning to first release, is expected to be approximately three to four weeks at lake temperatures, following the pattern of congeners.

In aquaria the species has been bred successfully, though it is uncommon enough in the trade that detailed hobbyist accounts are sparse. The standard approach for Malawi maternal mouthbrooders applies: a species-appropriate tank with rock structure and open water, a single male with multiple females, and consistent water quality maintained at lake parameters.

In the aquarium

Protomelas insignis is rarely seen in the hobby. It does not appear regularly in commercial cichlid lists, and when it does surface it is usually as a single-location variant — Gome, Otter Island, or Mdoka — rather than as a species kept and bred at scale. Keepers interested in acquiring it should expect to source it from specialist Malawi breeders or importers rather than from general aquarium retailers. That scarcity is worth stating plainly: most care guidance for this species is extrapolated from experience with related Lake Malawi haplochromines rather than from a large body of keeper reports specific to Protomelas insignis.

Tank requirements follow the standard formula for large haplochromine cichlids from rocky Lake Malawi biotopes. A single male with two or three females comfortably needs at least 80 US gal, and more water volume is better — males reach around 8 in and need open swimming space. The substrate should be fine sand, which the fish will rearrange but not excavate aggressively in the way mbuna do. Rock structure is important for two reasons: it provides territory-marking reference points for the male and retreat cover for females that are recovering from breeding or avoiding male attention. A back wall of stacked rocks with open sand in the middle and foreground approximates the intermediate rock-to-sand transition zone the species occupies in the lake. Dense planting is neither necessary nor particularly useful; Vallisneria or other background plants will be tolerated but should not crowd the open midwater that this fish prefers.

Water chemistry must reflect Lake Malawi conditions. Maintain pH in the range of 7.8–8.5, temperature 75–81 °F, and hardness in the 10–20 dH range. Carbonate buffering is essential — the pH should not be allowed to drift downward, and regular partial water changes (25–30% weekly) are the most reliable way to keep both pH stability and nitrate in check. This species, like most Malawi cichlids, has low tolerance for organically degraded water, and high nitrate is one of the more reliable triggers for Malawi bloat — a bacterial and protozoal gut condition that kills Malawi cichlids quickly and without much warning. Feeding a diet weighted toward meaty and invertebrate-based foods (krill, mysis, cyclops, quality cichlid pellets) is appropriate for an egg-robber; an excess of vegetable-rich cichlid foods is less well-matched to its trophic ecology, though it will eat them.

Tankmate selection requires thought. Protomelas insignis is moderately peaceful for a large hap — it is not an mbuna and does not engage in the grinding territorial aggression characteristic of rock-dwelling algae-grazers — but males in breeding condition will be assertive toward other males of similar size and appearance. It is best kept in a Malawi haplochromine community rather than mixed with mbuna, which tend to be smaller, faster, and more persistently aggressive. Suitable companions include other open-water haplochromines of comparable or slightly different body shape — Copadichromis, Sciaenochromis, or less aggressive Aulonocara species — and peaceable Lake Malawi peacocks. Avoid mixing with species small enough to be targeted as egg or fry sources in ways that stress other tankmates, and avoid overstocking, which exacerbates aggression in any hap community.

Breeding in captivity follows the maternal mouthbrooding pattern described in the Breeding section. A species-typical clutch for a female of this size runs to several dozen eggs; the female will hold for approximately three to four weeks at aquarium temperatures before releasing free-swimming fry. She should be moved to a separate brooding tank once the swollen buccal pouch is visible, both to protect her from male harassment and to prevent the male from attempting to strip her prematurely. Released fry are large enough at first release to take Artemia nauplii and finely crushed pellets. The mother's post-release guarding behavior noted from field observations has been observed in captivity as well; she should be left with the fry for at least another week before being returned to the main tank. Difficulty level is moderate: the species is undemanding in terms of specialist water conditions or foods, but its infrequency in the trade means the keeper should be comfortable sourcing healthy stock, quarantining new fish properly, and maintaining the consistent water quality that all Malawi cichlids require.

Conservation

Protomelas insignis is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (assessed 20 June 2018 by Ad Konings and Jacqueline Kazembe; published 2019 as an amended assessment adding newly sourced point data to the distribution map). The justification is straightforward: the species is endemic to Lake Malawi with a lake-wide distribution and faces no known major widespread threats. It is not targeted by the ornamental fish trade — the IUCN notes it is only occasionally exported as single specimens — and no fisheries or habitat pressures specific to Protomelas insignis are identified.

The species' uncommonness across its range is notable but does not, by itself, indicate a conservation problem; it is a specialist at the top of a narrow trophic niche and is simply not expected to be abundant. Its reliance on the breeding activity of other rocky-habitat cichlids ties its welfare partly to the health of those host species and their rocky-reef biotopes.

At the lake level, however, Lake Malawi faces compounding pressures that form the backdrop for any assessment of its endemic cichlid fauna. Chavula et al. (2023) and the broader fisheries literature document declining fish catches in the lake over recent decades, linked to overfishing of the pelagic fishery (especially Copadichromis utaka and related utaka cichlids), increasing sedimentation from deforestation of the catchment, and evidence of thermal stratification intensification consistent with climate-driven lake warming. These stressors bear differently on different cichlids: a shallow rocky-shore species like Protomelas insignis depends on clear water over undisturbed rocky reefs, and increased turbidity from sedimentation degrades both the habitat quality and presumably the hunting efficiency of a fish that locates prey visually and at a distance. None of these pressures has been documented as affecting Protomelas insignis specifically at population level, and the LC assessment stands — but they represent the environmental context in which the species' long-term security should be understood.
