Taxonomy & naming
Ethelwynn Trewavas described this species in 1935 in her monograph "A Synopsis of the Cichlid Fishes of Lake Nyasa" (Annals and Magazine of Natural History, Series 10, vol. 16, pp. 65–118), placing it originally as a subspecies: Pseudotropheus tropheops gracilior. The name flagged the key morphological point immediately — gracilior is the Latin comparative of gracilis, meaning 'more slender,' and Trewavas used it to contrast this fish with the nominate Pseudotropheus tropheops, which carries a heavier, more robust build. Syntypes were catalogued at the British Museum (Natural History), BMNH 1935.6.14.222–234, and at the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle, Paris, MNHN 1937-0150. Type locality: Vua and Deep Bay, Lake Malawi (then Lake Nyasa), in what is today northern Tanzania and northwestern Malawi.
For most of the 20th century the fish lived in taxonomic limbo. Colombé (1979) treated it as a valid subspecies of Pseudotropheus tropheops rather than a full species; Maréchal (1991) maintained that ranking. The genus Tropheops was erected by Trewavas herself in 1984, but gracilior's elevation to full species status came only with the revision by Shan Li, Ad Konings and Jay Stauffer (2016), validated by Konings's field treatment (2016). Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (updated May 2026) lists it unambiguously as valid: Tropheops gracilior (Trewavas 1935), Cichlidae: Pseudocrenilabrinae, Lake Malawi.
FLAG — Genus confirmation: Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (online, May 2026 update) explicitly uses Tropheops for gracilior, citing Konings 2016 and Li et al. 2016 as the validating references. The older combination Pseudotropheus tropheops gracilior still appears in pre-2016 hobby and museum literature.
In the hobby the species is sometimes marketed as Tropheops sp. 'black' at localities where non-breeding fish carry a dark overall coloration, though that provisional label does not map cleanly onto any single described species and should not be treated as a synonym. The CRC notes this informally; no formal synonymy has been established.
Morphology
Tropheops gracilior is a modestly sized mbuna. FishBase records a maximum of 4.5 in TL for males; malawi.si notes males up to 4.5 in TL and females typically reaching about 3.5 in. The defining feature is the elongate body — by mbuna standards Tropheops gracilior is slender, a contrast visible alongside Tropheops tropheops on the same reef. The forehead rises steeply, and the snout is short, with a narrow, subterminal mouth set at a pronounced downward angle, biologically suited for grazing tightly attached algal filaments from steep rock faces. The outer jaw teeth are bicuspid.
Sexual dichromatism is striking. Dominant males develop bright powder-blue to royal-blue flanks, typically with faint vertical barring, black pelvic fins edged in white, and one to three yellow egg-spots (ocelli) on the anal fin. The precise hue varies markedly with locality: Konings observed that males at Thumbi West Island carry a purple-rust coloration, while males photographed at Lundu and Kirondo (Tanzania) are clear blue. Females and subordinate males are yellow to grey-white and lack the male's intense metallic colouration. This level of geographic colour polymorphism — the same described species wearing different colours at reefs separated by open water — is characteristic of the mbuna radiation and is one reason the fish has circulated in the hobby under multiple provisional locality names.
Habitat
Tropheops gracilior is a Lake Malawi endemic, found nowhere else on Earth. malawi.si gives the distributional boundary as rocky coast north of Lundu on the eastern (Tanzanian and Mozambican) shore and north of Mundola Point on the western (Malawian) shore — broadly the central-to-northern lake. FishBase summarises distribution as roughly 8°S–15°S. The type localities, Vua and Deep Bay (the latter also known as Chilumba Bay on the northwestern shore), anchor the species firmly to the northern half of the lake.
The biotope is rocky reef and intermediate habitat — the exposed, sediment-free boulders and rubble zones where wave action keeps the rock clean and algal turf productive. malawi.si describes a preference for rocky habitat with caves and crevices, and the species is documented from both steep rocky walls and the intermediate sediment-rock transition that many Tropheops exploit. FishBase lists no specific depth range for this species; mbuna of this guild generally concentrate in the sunlit upper few metres, and the male nesting behaviour (digging beneath rocks) implies shallow, shelter-rich substrate. The figure 8°S–15°S cited by FishBase is a latitudinal range, not a depth envelope.
The in-lake water chemistry is alkaline and hard, as throughout Lake Malawi. FishBase gives pH 7.4–8.4 and dH 6–30 for this species, with temperature 73–81 °F. The broader lake literature (Chavula et al. 2023) places surface temperatures at about 75–82 °F seasonally; the Konings (2007) reference cited by FishBase characterises standard Malawi mbuna conditions in that same band.
Feeding
Like its congeners, Tropheops gracilior is a specialist epilithic algal grazer — an Aufwuchs feeder in the terminology lake cichlid biologists use. Aufwuchs is the dense biofilm of short filamentous algae, diatoms, cyanobacteria and tiny invertebrates that coats sunlit rock; it is the primary energy source for the mbuna guild as a whole. The species feeds in a head-down posture, angled at roughly 60° to the rock surface according to malawi.si, using short, sharp pulls to detach algal filaments with its bicuspid outer teeth.
Ribbink et al.'s foundational 1983 survey of mbuna ecology placed the Tropheops complex squarely in the algal-grazer guild alongside Labeotropheus, Petrotilapia and a few other genera. Conith et al. (2020) used Tropheops specifically as their model system for studying how the mandible, pharyngeal jaw and associated bones diverge under selection as populations colonise different depths, confirming that the genus is a trophic specialist in which feeding-bone shape varies predictably with habitat depth. As with Tropheops tropheops and Tropheops macrophthalmus, opportunistic plankton feeding is documented when surface blooms make that resource abundantly available — malawi.si notes the possibility, and FishBase lists both algae and plankton in the diet.
Mating
Territorial males hold patches of rocky substrate, defending both feeding area and spawning sites — the two being inseparable in the mbuna system, where the male's nest is invariably a crevice or excavated cavity on the same rock he feeds from. FishBase describes Tropheops gracilior males as active cave-dwellers and diggers who actively excavate beneath rocks. Aggression between males is pronounced and strongly colour-directed: because different geographic colour forms are visually distinct, hybridisation between Tropheops gracilior and sympatric look-alikes including Tropheops romandi at Thumbi West is limited by colour recognition; Konings notes in the Thumbi West CRC article that the two species can be told apart only by male colour (Tropheops romandi dark blue; Tropheops gracilior purple-rust at that locality).
Females are peripatetic, moving among male territories. Courtship follows the standard haplochromine pattern: a territorial male displays, quivers, and leads a receptive female toward his cave. The species is not documented forming lasting pair bonds; males spawn multiply with visiting females and provide no post-spawning parental care.
Breeding
Tropheops gracilior is a maternal (ovophilous) mouthbrooder — the standard mode for the Lake Malawi haplochromine radiation. After spawning in or near the male's cavity, the female collects the eggs in her buccal cavity almost immediately. FishBase cites an incubation period of approximately 25 days before the female releases free-swimming fry; it also notes that eggs hatch in less than a week internally, with the remaining brooding time devoted to yolk absorption and early fry development.
Clutch size has not been formally published for gracilior specifically. FishBase lists no clutch figure for this species; the figure given in the site's biology section (no clutch number) and the absence of a fecundity record mean this value must be treated as unknown and is presented as null here (FLAG: unpublished; habitat-typical for the genus is approximately 20–50 eggs, consistent with the small clutches typical of mouthbrooding mbuna of this size, but no peer-reviewed count for Tropheops gracilior has been verified). The brooding female does not feed during incubation. Fry are sheltered briefly in the mother's mouth after first becoming free-swimming, then disperse independently with no further parental care from either parent.
In the aquarium
Tropheops gracilior is uncommon in the hobby. It surfaces occasionally in specialist mbuna dealers under locality labels such as 'Kirondo' or 'Lundu,' but it is nowhere near as widely available as the dozens of Metriaclima and Pseudotropheus species that dominate the trade. Keepers will typically need to seek out a Malawi specialist or a cichlid society auction to find it, and even then misidentified fish are a real risk given how closely gracilior resembles other Tropheops at non-breeding age or when females are involved. This rarity is worth stating plainly: most of what is sold as Tropheops in general trade is not this species.
For those who do obtain it, the tank requirement is a standard mbuna setup. A minimum footprint of 47 in is workable for a small group, but 59 in or longer is strongly preferred because males are territorial and aggressive, and extra horizontal length is the single most effective way to buffer inter-male conflict. Rockwork is non-negotiable: a deep pile of smooth boulders and flat rocks stacked to form caves, overhangs and crevices should occupy two-thirds to three-quarters of the tank floor. The mid-water and front glass can be left relatively clear. Sand or fine gravel substrate suits the species; males will excavate shallow pits beneath favoured rocks for spawning. Coarse, bare-bottom tanks are functional but miss the character of the biotope.
Water chemistry must mirror Lake Malawi's hard, alkaline conditions. The facts for this species give a pH of 7.4–8.4 and a temperature of 73–81 °F; in practice, maintaining pH at 7.8–8.5 with total hardness above 10 °dH is appropriate, consistent with the lake's famously stable, rift-lake chemistry. Moderate to brisk filtration suits an active rock-grazer; the lake itself is exceptionally clear and well-oxygenated. Weekly water changes of 25–30% help maintain alkalinity and dilute nitrogenous waste.
Diet is the most critical management variable and the area where keepers most commonly cause harm. Tropheops gracilior is an Aufwuchs specialist — in the lake it grazes almost nothing but short algal turf. In captivity it must receive a predominantly plant-based diet: spirulina flake or pellet, blanched spinach or courgette, and spirulina-enriched mbuna-specific foods. Animal-protein foods — bloodworm, brine shrimp, beefheart, high-protein cichlid pellets — should be given sparingly at best and avoided as staples. Feeding a high-protein diet to an mbuna that did not evolve to process it is the primary driver of Malawi bloat (a fatal colic-like syndrome, probably involving Hexamita or disruption of gut flora), which kills Tropheops with depressing regularity in tanks fed standard community-cichlid diets. Treat vegetable-based feeding as non-negotiable, not optional.
Tankmates should be other Lake Malawi rock dwellers of similar robustness. Suitable companions include other mid-sized mbuna — Metriaclima, Pseudotropheus, or Labidochromis — provided there is adequate space and rockwork to break lines of sight. Avoid housing with Tropheops species that share similar male colouring: the risk is hybridisation, and the gracilior–Tropheops romandi case at Thumbi West (where the two species co-occur and are distinguished only by male colour) illustrates how easy it is to produce unwanted hybrids when colour forms are similar. In a sufficiently large tank a single-species group — one male, three or more females — is the safest social arrangement; two males in anything under 71 in will usually end in the subordinate male being killed or harassed to death. The species is a maternal mouthbrooder and will breed readily once settled. The female broods for approximately 25 days; removing her to a bare holding tank for the last week of her hold reduces the chance that hunger drives her to spit the fry early, and gives the small fry a better survival environment before they are returned to the main display.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Tropheops gracilior as Least Concern (Ad Konings, assessed 19 June 2018; doi:10.2305/IUCN.UK.2018-2.RLTS.T61156A47237704.en). The assessment notes a stable population, occurrence across a substantial range of the lake's rocky shoreline, and no CITES listing. Specific concerns identified in the assessment are sedimentation of rocky habitat and collection for the ornamental fish trade — both real pressures for a shallow, reef-tied grazer, but neither at a level the assessment flags as driving population decline.
The wider context matters. Chavula et al. (2023, Journal of Great Lakes Research 49(6):102241) document the lake-scale threats to Lake Malawi/Niassa/Nyasa: overfishing that has depressed commercially important cichlid stocks, sediment and nutrient runoff from deforested catchments, surface warming of roughly +33 °F strengthening thermal stratification and reducing upwelling of nutrients, and the risk of invasive species. For an epilithic algal grazer like Tropheops gracilior, sedimentation is the most direct threat: the Aufwuchs it depends on grows only on clean, sunlit, sediment-free rock, and eroded fine sediment settling onto boulders both smothers the algal turf and clogs the crevices the fish uses for nesting. Rocky shorelines in agricultural catchments around northern and central Malawi have experienced exactly this kind of degradation over recent decades. The species' Least Concern status reflects a still-abundant population; its security depends on the rocky littoral remaining clean.
