Brycinus macrolepidotus was described by Achille Valenciennes in 1850. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) is the governing authority for the valid name; the species sits in the genus Brycinus within the family Alestidae, the African tetras, a group unrelated to the South American Characidae despite the superficial resemblance shared by many characiform fishes.
The genus Brycinus was long treated as part of a broadly construed Alestes, and much older literature will reference this species as Alestes macrolepidotus. Modern revisions of African characiforms have stabilised Brycinus as a distinct genus, and macrolepidotus remains within it. The species epithet is derived from the Greek makros (large) and lepis (scale), an accurate description of the notably large, prominent scales that give the fish its common English name.
Morphology
The True big-scale tetra is a large, torpedo-shaped characiform with a moderately compressed body and a forked tail typical of active, open-water swimmers. FishBase records a maximum standard length of 21 in, making it one of the largest alestids. Body depth is moderate, the back slightly arched, and the fins relatively large and well-developed for a fast-river species.
As the name implies, the scales are conspicuously large relative to body size, a key distinguishing character. The overall colour is silvery with a bluish or greenish dorsal sheen; the flanks reflect light strongly off the large scale surfaces. Juveniles and subadults (roughly 4–12 in in studies from Nigerian rivers) are smaller and generally silvery without strong accessory pigmentation; adults above about 12 in show the fully developed body proportions and scale coverage that characterise the species. Habitat

Feeding

Its maximum size of 21 in places it firmly outside the range of any domestic aquarium of standard dimensions — only very large, professionally maintained public aquaria or serious fish houses with tanks in the multi-thousand-litre range could house a group of adult fish appropriately. Juveniles (4–8 in) are occasionally encountered in the trade and may be kept by advanced aquarists in large systems, but buyers must plan for the fish's ultimate size from the outset.
The species is best regarded as an active, pelagic schooling fish in the wild and will need substantial open swimming space, good water movement, and robust filtration to cope with its waste output at larger sizes. Water temperature in the range 72–82 °F, with neutral to moderately alkaline pH, is appropriate. Its omnivorous feeding makes it undemanding with respect to food, accepting prepared foods, frozen invertebrates, and, for larger individuals, whole small fish.
