Taxonomy & naming
Alestopetersius bleheri was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Géry in 1995. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name with the parenthetical authority (Géry, 1995), indicating that the species was originally placed in a different genus before being transferred to Alestopetersius. The type locality is a small tributary of the Bari River, itself part of the Lua River system within the Ubangi drainage of the middle Congo River basin, in what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The genus Alestopetersius is placed in the family Alestidae, the African characins, a diverse assemblage of freshwater fishes distributed across sub-Saharan Africa. Within Alestidae, Alestopetersius is one of several genera of moderately sized, schooling tetras whose members collectively occupy a wide range of river systems across Central and West Africa. The genus is distinguished from related genera by a suite of morphological characters including body proportions and fin placement. A. bleheri is one of the less frequently encountered members of the genus, and its biology and distribution remain incompletely documented.
The specific epithet bleheri is a patronym honouring the aquarist and explorer Heiko Bleher, who has contributed extensively to the discovery and collection of ornamental freshwater fishes from remote tropical localities.
Morphology
Alestopetersius bleheri is a small tetra reaching approximately 2.5 in standard length (SL) in males and unsexed specimens, with females slightly smaller at around 2.5 in SL. Like other members of the genus, it is a slender, laterally compressed characin with the typical alestid body plan: a streamlined profile suited to open-water schooling in riverine habitats.
As with many members of Alestopetersius, the species is presumed to display the family's characteristic features: a distinct adipose fin, a forked caudal fin, and relatively large eyes that are common in the clear to lightly tannin-stained waters of the Congo drainage. Detailed colour descriptions and meristic data for this species are sparse in the published literature, and comprehensive morphological accounts await more thorough study. What is recorded confirms a small, gracile fish consistent with the genus's general character.
Habitat
Alestopetersius bleheri is known from the type locality in a small tributary of the Bari River, a watercourse within the Lua River system of the Ubangi drainage, in the middle Congo River basin of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The broader Congo basin encompasses one of the most biodiverse freshwater systems on Earth, characterised by a mosaic of large rivers, smaller tributaries, swampy side-channels, and flooded forest margins.
Small tributaries in this region typically carry soft, slightly acidic to near-neutral water, often darkened by humic acids leaching from forest leaf litter. Water temperatures in the middle Congo basin at lowland elevations generally range from the low to mid-20s Celsius. Based on the ecology of closely related Alestopetersius species and the character of similar Congo-system tributaries, A. bleheri likely inhabits slow to moderately flowing, well-shaded stream environments with abundant submerged or marginal vegetation and leaf litter on the substrate. The full extent of the species' range beyond the type locality has not been established.
Feeding
Alestidae tetras are primarily insectivorous in the wild, taking small invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans, and surface insects — with opportunistic omnivory that may include small amounts of plant material or algae. Alestopetersius bleheri is presumed to follow this feeding guild, consistent with the ecology of congeners such as Alestopetersius caudalis and the broader pattern across the family.
In an aquarium setting, members of the genus accept a variety of prepared foods including quality flake and small granules, with frozen and live invertebrate foods — Daphnia, brine shrimp, bloodworm — providing important dietary enrichment. A varied diet with live or frozen components supports good condition and natural colouration.
Mating
No detailed mating observations specific to Alestopetersius bleheri are recorded in the published literature. Based on the reproductive biology of the family Alestidae, the species is presumed to be an egg-scattering open spawner in which males court receptive females through active pursuit and lateral displays. As in other alestid tetras, spawning likely takes place among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or submerged roots, with the pair releasing adhesive eggs that settle among plant material or substrate. No parental care is expected following spawning, which is typical for open-substrate egg scatterers in this family.
Keeping the species in groups — with multiple males present — is likely to stimulate natural courtship behaviour, as is common in schooling alestid tetras.
Breeding
Alestopetersius bleheri has not been documented as a regularly bred species in the aquarium hobby, and detailed captive-breeding accounts are absent from the accessible literature. By analogy with related Alestopetersius species and the general reproductive pattern of Alestidae, the species is expected to be an egg-scattering spawner depositing small, adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, with no parental care offered by either parent.
Adults in suitable condition will readily eat their own eggs, so standard practice for alestid tetras applies: condition adults in separate quarters on a high-protein diet, transfer to a well-planted or mop-equipped breeding tank, and remove adults promptly after spawning. Eggs are likely to hatch within a few days at appropriate temperatures, and the fry will require very fine first foods — infusoria, rotifers, or commercial liquid fry preparations — before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii.
In the aquarium
Alestopetersius bleheri is rarely encountered in the ornamental fish trade and is not an established hobby species. If obtained, it should be treated as a schooling fish requiring the company of its own kind — a group of six or more individuals is advisable to allow natural social behaviour and reduce individual stress. A well-filtered aquarium with soft, slightly acidic to neutral water (pH approximately 6.5–7.5) and temperatures in the range of 72–79 °F would be appropriate, reflecting the general character of its Congo-system habitat.
Aquascaping with fine-leaved plants, floating vegetation for shade, and a dark substrate or leaf-litter layer will create conditions closer to the species' natural environment and encourage confident behaviour. As a small, peaceful schooling tetra it is suited to a community of similarly sized, non-aggressive fishes. Given how little is known of this species in captivity, any keeper who maintains and breeds it successfully would be contributing genuinely useful information to the hobby and scientific literature.
Conservation
Alestopetersius bleheri is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, a status that reflects the near-total absence of population data rather than a confirmed determination of safety or threat. The species is known from a restricted type locality in the Lua–Ubangi drainage of the DRC, and no systematic surveys of its abundance or range extent appear to have been conducted since the original description in 1995.
The Democratic Republic of the Congo encompasses vast and relatively intact freshwater habitats in the Congo basin, but smaller tributary systems can be locally affected by deforestation, agricultural runoff, and artisanal activities. Without baseline population data it is not possible to assess whether A. bleheri faces meaningful threat, and the Data Deficient listing appropriately signals that the species requires more field study before its conservation status can be evaluated. Any targeted surveys of small tributaries in the Lua–Ubangi system that could document presence, range, and population size would meaningfully improve understanding of this little-known fish.
