Taxonomy & naming
Alestopetersius brichardi was described by the Belgian ichthyologist Max Poll in 1967, with a type locality recorded from Yangambi and Lake Yandja in the middle Congo tributary system — waters draining through the Busira and Ruki rivers into the main Congo. The species is placed in Alestopetersius, a genus of small to medium-sized African characins in the family Alestidae, the African tetras. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records Poll, 1967 as the valid authority; the name has remained stable since its original description.
Within the genus Alestopetersius, A. brichardi is one of several Congo basin species of similar build and coloration. The genus belongs to the tribe Alestini within Alestidae and is distinguished from allied genera by a combination of meristic and proportional characters. The species is most readily separated from its congeners by geographic distribution, scale count, and the proportions of the fins, though field identification of Alestopetersius in the Congo basin can be challenging without specimens in hand.
Morphology
Alestopetersius brichardi is a moderately elongate, laterally compressed tetra reaching around 3 in standard length according to FishBase, with some hobbyist sources reporting average lengths closer to 3.5–4 in total length. The body is fusiform and streamlined, suited to life in flowing and open-water riverine habitats. The adipose fin, characteristic of the Alestidae, is present and typically small.
Colouration is silvery to golden-silver with a faint iridescent sheen along the flanks. Males in breeding condition typically display more intense colouring and may develop deeper body pigmentation compared with females. The fins are largely hyaline to faintly yellowish. Like many members of the genus, the species lacks the bold stripes or spots of some popular aquarium tetras, but in good light and condition a school can be visually striking through sheer collective movement and glinting flanks.
Habitat
Alestopetersius brichardi occurs in the middle and upper Congo River basin, with confirmed records from Pool Malebo, the middle Congo main channel, the Ruki drainage, and the Lomami River — all within the Democratic Republic of Congo. The type locality data point additionally to the Busira and Ruki tributary systems and Lake Yandja in the middle Congo region. This is the great equatorial Congo drainage: large, brown-stained, often moderately acidic rivers and associated lakes and flooded forest margins.
The species is classified as a freshwater, pelagic fish by FishBase, indicating it occupies open-water or mid-column habitats in rivers and associated still waters rather than benthic microhabitats. Water in the middle Congo basin is typically warm, soft, and slightly to moderately acidic. Reported parameters from hobbyist sources suggest a temperature range of 68–82 °F and pH 6–7, consistent with conditions found throughout the lower to mid-Congo drainage. The species is not recorded from rapids or highly turbulent whitewater habitats.
Feeding
Alestopetersius brichardi is an omnivore with a carnivorous tendency, taking small invertebrates, zooplankton, and aquatic insects in the wild, supplemented by plant material and organic detritus where available. Its mouth and body form are consistent with active pursuit of small prey items in mid-water.
In the aquarium it adapts readily to a varied diet. Hobbyist accounts recommend small live and frozen foods — bloodworm, Daphnia, and brine shrimp (Artemia) — as the core of the diet, with quality flakes or micro-granules providing a convenient daily staple. The addition of plant matter or spirulina-based foods rounds out nutritional requirements. As with many active characins, feeding small amounts multiple times per day rather than one large meal suits both the fish's metabolism and water quality.
Mating
Alestopetersius brichardi is an oviparous, egg-scattering open spawner with no parental care. Males become more colourful in breeding condition and engage in competitive display behaviour, establishing temporary dominance hierarchies within the group. Rival males chase and display laterally to one another, and females are courted by the most dominant individuals in the school.
Spawning is initiated by the male driving a ripe female into fine-leaved vegetation or open water, where eggs are scattered and fertilised in typical characin fashion. The adults take no further interest in eggs or larvae after spawning is complete. Maintaining a group with multiple males is beneficial for eliciting display behaviour and bringing both sexes into condition.
Breeding
As an open egg-scatterer, Alestopetersius brichardi deposits its eggs freely among fine-leaved aquatic plants or over a substrate, where they sink or adhere lightly without the sticky filaments seen in some rainbowfishes. A separate, well-prepared breeding tank with dense clumps of fine-leaved plants (Java moss or equivalent) and slightly soft, warm water in the mid-to-upper range of the species' tolerance (around 79–81 °F) is the standard approach for deliberate breeding.
Conditioned adults will typically spawn after an early morning temperature rise or following a partial water change that mimics wet-season conditions. Eggs and adults should be separated promptly after spawning to prevent predation. The eggs are relatively small and hatch within a few days at breeding temperatures. Fry are tiny at first and require infusoria or commercial liquid fry food before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp. Data on typical clutch sizes and precise incubation times in captivity remain sparse in the available literature.
In the aquarium
Alestopetersius brichardi is a peaceful, active schooling fish best maintained in groups of six or more in a tank of at least 31.5–39.5 in in length to allow free swimming and natural shoaling behaviour. A dark substrate, subdued lighting softened by floating plants, and a background of dense vegetation suit the fish's Congo-basin origins and show the silvery flanks to best effect.
Water chemistry should reflect the species' native habitat: soft to moderately soft, slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 6–7) at 68–82 °F. Good filtration with moderate flow is beneficial, though the species does not require the strong current demanded by rheophilic species. Tankmates should be similarly sized and peaceful — other Congo tetras, dwarf cichlids, and small catfish are natural companions. The species is not widely available in the hobby and is more often encountered in specialist shops or through aquarium society fish sales than in general retail. Hardiness and ease of feeding make it a rewarding species for the intermediate aquarist willing to source it.
Conservation
Alestopetersius brichardi is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, reflecting its broad distribution across multiple drainages of the middle and upper Congo basin and the absence of major documented threats to its populations at a range-wide level. The assessment was completed in 2009.
The Congo River basin, while subject to ongoing deforestation, agricultural expansion, and artisanal mining in parts of its catchment, remains one of the largest intact tropical freshwater systems on Earth, and many of its fish species continue to exist across extensive areas of relatively undisturbed habitat. The species is collected for the aquarium trade but is not considered heavily targeted, and no specific population declines have been documented. Continued monitoring of Congo basin fish communities is valuable given the scale of development pressure on the broader watershed.
