Taxonomy & naming
Alestopetersius conspectus was described by Mbimbi Mayi Munene and Melanie L.J. Stiassny in 2012 in the journal Zootaxa (volume 3166, pages 59–68). The holotype, AMNH 253473 (2 in standard length), was collected from the Kwilu River at Carrefour (05.19160°S, 18.94947°E), Democratic Republic of Congo, on 24 February 2011. Paratypes were taken from two additional Kwilu localities within a short reach of the same river: Kwilu beach (05.04810°S, 18.83968°E) and Kwilu at Mbuji (05.07180°S, 18.86935°E).
The genus Alestopetersius was established for a group of small to medium-sized African tetras in the family Alestidae — the African tetras, a diverse characiform family spanning tropical Africa with roughly 110 species. Alestopetersius sits within the family alongside better-known genera such as Phenacogrammus and Bathyaethiops. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name as cited above; no subsequent revisions have moved the species to another genus.
Morphology
Alestopetersius conspectus is a gracile, shallow-bodied tetra reaching a maximum of 2 in standard length (roughly 2 in), with most specimens in the 2 in SL range recorded at the type locality. The body is slender and moderately compressed, typical of the genus, with proportions that contrast with the deeper-bodied members of some allied alestid genera.
The caudal-fin pattern is the species' defining character and the source of its name. A median black band crosses the caudal fork and is flanked above and below by dense black bands in the upper and lower lobes; these dark bands are separated by contrasting white bands. In life the white interspaces flush bright orange, creating a tri-band effect of black, orange, and black against the pale lobes — conspicuous in the water and visible at a distance. The flanks in life are iridescent silver overlaid with greenish-copper and bluish reflections depending on the angle of light.
Sexual dimorphism is expressed in two ways: the anal-fin margin is convex in males and concave in females, a character diagnostic within the species; and the first four or five branched dorsal-fin rays are elongated and filamentous in males, giving sexually mature males a distinctly higher-backed silhouette compared with females.
Habitat
All known specimens of Alestopetersius conspectus were collected from the Kwilu River, a major tributary of the Kasai River within the Congo basin, in the western Democratic Republic of Congo. The Kwilu is a blackwater-influenced lowland river system; water conditions at the type locality were recorded as 70–73 °F and pH 5.8–6.5, consistent with the soft, acidic waters typical of Kasai tributaries draining rainforest catchments.
Despite intensive sampling over a 35-kilometre stretch of the Kwilu by the describing authors, no specimens were recovered from the main Congo, Kasai, or Lulua rivers, suggesting the species may be genuinely restricted to this reach or possibly to the Kwilu drainage more broadly. Whether suitable microhabitat elsewhere in the Kwilu might harbour additional populations is unknown; the river passes through forest and forest-margin zones where conditions suitable for small rheophilic tetras likely occur at multiple points.
Feeding
Gut-content analysis of specimens collected in February 2011 showed a markedly carnivorous diet dominated by terrestrial insects taken at or near the water surface: ants and small midges were the predominant prey items. This surface-feeding habit is consistent with the anatomy — the species has short intestinal tracts (approximately 60% of standard length) and large stomachs with six to eight pyloric caeca, a configuration associated with protein-rich, invertebrate-heavy diets in small African tetras.
The reliance on allochthonous (forest-derived) insect inputs places A. conspectus in an ecological guild of surface-foraging insectivores common among African alestids inhabiting forest streams. It is likely to be an opportunist that takes other small invertebrates and possibly floating plant material when insects are scarce, as is typical of small characiforms with similar gut morphology.
Mating
Direct observation of spawning behaviour in Alestopetersius conspectus has not been published. Females collected in February 2011 — the southern hemisphere late wet season — showed maturing oocytes, and males had enlarged testes, indicating that the population was approaching or entering reproductive condition at the time of collection. This suggests spawning occurs seasonally, likely timed to the high-water period of the Kwilu when flooded forest margins provide cover and prey abundance.
Based on the biology of allied alestid genera, A. conspectus is presumed to be an egg-scattering open-water or plant spawner with no parental care — the typical reproductive mode for small African tetras. Males are likely to pursue females with courtship displays; the sexually dimorphic filamentous dorsal rays and convex anal fin of males may function as visual signals during courtship. No aquarium spawning accounts have been documented in the published or accessible hobbyist literature.
Breeding
Alestopetersius conspectus has not been bred in captivity under documented conditions, and no detailed breeding accounts appear in the available literature. Given the species' apparent rarity in the hobby — it does not appear in mainstream ornamental trade channels — practical husbandry and breeding data are absent.
By analogy with related alestids such as Phenacogrammus interruptus and other small Alestopetersius species, the reproductive mode is expected to involve egg-scattering among fine-leaved plants or other substrate, with adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs, no parental care, and fry requiring very small live foods such as infusoria or rotifers in the first days after hatching. Water conditions during any captive breeding attempt should replicate the soft, slightly acidic Kwilu conditions (pH 5.8–6.5, temperature 70–73 °F) documented at the type locality. Until documented accounts are available, all specifics remain provisional.
In the aquarium
Alestopetersius conspectus is essentially absent from the ornamental fish trade and is unlikely to be encountered outside of specialist collections or ichthyological research. The species was described only in 2012 from field-collected material and has not, to any documented extent, entered the hobby mainstream. Husbandry recommendations therefore must be extrapolated from the known biology and from experience with allied alestids.
The Kwilu conditions — cool to warm soft acidic water at 70–73 °F, pH 5.8–6.5 — suggest the species would be best kept in a well-filtered, lightly planted aquarium with soft, slightly acidic water and moderate flow. As a surface-foraging insectivore it would likely accept small live and frozen invertebrates (daphnia, brine shrimp, small bloodworm, fruit flies) and quality small dried foods. The sexual dimorphism, including the filamentous dorsal rays of males, suggests that a group containing both sexes would show the species to best advantage. Given what is known of related genera, it is expected to be peaceful and suited to a community of similarly sized fish from comparable water conditions.
Conservation
Alestopetersius conspectus has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List. The species is known from a narrow sampling window — a 35-kilometre stretch of the Kwilu River — and intensive sampling by the describing authors failed to detect it outside that reach in the main Congo, Kasai, or Lulua rivers. Whether this reflects genuine range restriction or simply inadequate survey effort in a remote and understudied basin is not yet clear.
The Congo basin ichthyofauna is among the most diverse and most poorly documented on earth; new species continue to be described regularly, and many known species have never been formally evaluated for extinction risk. For A. conspectus, the combination of an apparently narrow range, very low profile in both the scientific literature and the hobby trade, and the ongoing pressures of habitat degradation and artisanal fishing throughout the Kasai basin make it a species that warrants future survey work and, eventually, a formal IUCN assessment. The Kwilu River system, like much of the central Congo drainage, is subject to deforestation and agricultural encroachment that can alter the hydrology and water chemistry on which forest-stream species depend.
