Taxonomy & naming
Alestopetersius caudalis was originally described by George Albert Boulenger in 1899, placing it in the African tetra family Alestidae (historically Characidae: Alestinae). The parenthetical authority reflects a subsequent generic reassignment from the original placement into the genus Alestopetersius. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Catalog of Fishes, CAS) is the governing authority for the valid name and combination.
The genus Alestopetersius is small and entirely African, aligned within the Alestidae alongside better-known relatives such as the Congo tetra (Phenacogrammus interruptus) and the African tiger fish (Hydrocynus vittatus). A. caudalis is the most frequently encountered member of the genus in the ornamental trade, sometimes appearing under older synonyms or incorrect genus assignments in the hobby literature. The Catalog of Fishes records no currently accepted synonyms for the species combination.
Morphology
Alestopetersius caudalis is an elongate, laterally compressed tetra reaching a maximum of approximately 2.5 in total length, with males recorded up to 3 in in dominant individuals; females are typically smaller and somewhat plainer. The dorsal fin has 2 spines and 8 soft rays; the anal fin bears 3–4 spines and 19–20 soft rays, the relatively long anal fin base being characteristic of the alestid group.
The body is ovoid in cross-section and silver to yellow-silver overall, marked by distinct black horizontal stripes running the length of the flanks. The fin edges and, in good-conditioned males, the tail region carry a yellow flush that gives the species its common name. Coloration intensifies with diet, water quality, and social stimulation; a stressed or recently imported fish appears washed out and shows the striped pattern only faintly. Sexual dimorphism is modest but consistent: males tend to be larger and brighter, females more rotund when gravid.
Habitat
The species is a freshwater, pelagic-tending tetra distributed across the lower and middle Congo River basin in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Central African Republic. Confirmed localities include Pool Malebo (formerly Stanley Pool), Lake Tumba, and the Ruki, Ubangi, Uele, Itimbiri, Aruwimi, and Lindi-Tshopo river systems. This is a wide though Congo-basin-centred range, consistent with the broadly lowland, tropical-river character of the drainage.
In the wild the species inhabits areas with strong aquatic vegetation, and the substrate beneath occupied zones tends to be sand, pebbles, or rocks. Water chemistry recorded for the Congo basin localities in which this species occurs spans pH 6.5–7.8 and hardness 0–20 dH, with temperatures in the 72–79 °F range — moderately warm, soft-to-moderately-hard, near-neutral water typical of Central African river habitats. The species is diurnal, described as living in small groups and frequenting the upper-to-middle water column.
Feeding
Alestopetersius caudalis is an omnivore with a carnivorous tendency, as reflected in its FishBase trophic level of 3.1. In the wild the species forages in the upper and middle water column for small invertebrates — insect larvae and small crustaceans — supplemented with plant material and algae encountered in vegetated habitats.
In the aquarium it accepts a wide range of prepared and live foods. A varied diet that includes good-quality flake or micro-pellet alongside regular offerings of frozen or live invertebrates (brine shrimp, Daphnia, Cyclops, mosquito larvae) produces the best coloration and breeding condition. Like many alestids it is an active, fast-moving feeder and competes readily at the surface; feed in multiple small portions daily to ensure all fish in the group receive adequate nutrition.
Mating
Alestopetersius caudalis is an open-water, egg-scattering spawner with no parental care, following the typical alestid reproductive pattern. Males court females with lateral displays that emphasize the striped flanks and the yellow flush of the tail; dominant males maintain display priority over subordinate rivals within a group, and courtship activity is most pronounced in the early morning hours.
The species spawns among fine-leaved vegetation or over the substrate surface, with the pair swimming side by side and releasing eggs in small numbers during each spawning pass. The social dimension of spawning is significant: males kept with rivals display more intensely and condition more readily than isolated individuals. A group containing multiple males and females held in good condition is the most reliable way to promote natural spawning behaviour.
Breeding
Breeding Alestopetersius caudalis in captivity is rated as moderately achievable, requiring attention to water conditions and conditioning diet but not advanced technique. Breeders typically set the breeding tank to around 79 °F and pH 6.0 — slightly warmer and more acidic than standard maintenance conditions — and provide fine-leaved plants or synthetic spawning mops as a spawning substrate. Adhesive eggs are deposited among the plant material and, because the adults offer no care and will consume eggs readily, the spawning medium or eggs should be transferred to a separate rearing container after spawning.
Incubation time at breeding temperature is typical for small African tetras: eggs hatch within a few days, and the resulting fry are initially tiny and require infusoria or commercial liquid fry food before they can take newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. Water quality in the rearing vessel is critical during this phase, as fry are sensitive to ammonia accumulation. Juveniles grow steadily under regular feeding and partial water changes, developing adult coloration and stripe definition over the first several months of life.
In the aquarium
Alestopetersius caudalis is described as peaceful and accessible for hobbyists willing to meet its social and space requirements. It is a schooling species that should be kept in groups of ten or more individuals — the IUCN and hobby sources both note its natural small-group behaviour — in an aquarium of at least 30 US gal. A longer tank that allows free horizontal swimming suits the species' diurnal, active, upper-water-column habits.
Recommended maintenance parameters are 72–79 °F, pH 6.8–7.2, and hardness 10–20 dH, though the species tolerates the broader pH 6.5–7.8 range documented from the wild. Planted tanks with open midwater swimming space, gentle to moderate flow, and subdued or dappled lighting replicate Congo basin conditions and encourage natural shoaling and display. Suitable tankmates include other peaceful Congo basin species and similarly sized tetras, barbs, or rasboras; it should not be housed with large or aggressive fish that will outcompete it at feeding or damage its fins. The commercial aquarium trade uses A. caudalis as a livelihood source in Central Africa, so where possible sourcing captive-bred stock reduces pressure on wild populations.
Conservation
Alestopetersius caudalis is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List (assessment published 2010, assessed 16 February 2009) under criteria version 3.1. The justification cites the species' wide distribution and absence of major threats sufficient to qualify it for a threatened category. The assessment notes that the population trend is unknown and flags commercial aquarium harvesting — local and national subsistence and intentional-use trade — as the primary identified threat; no international CITES listing applies.
The IUCN assessment note explicitly states the record needs updating, and the species has not been reassessed since 2009. Across its Congo basin range the species benefits from the sheer size and relative inaccessibility of much of the drainage, factors that buffer many Congo fish against the acute habitat loss affecting smaller or more isolated river systems. Continued monitoring and periodic reassessment would help determine whether aquarium collecting remains below population-level concern, particularly for Pool Malebo and other accessible nodes of the range close to Kinshasa.
