Aphyocharax nattereri is a small, lively characin reaching around 1 in standard length and native to the Amazon and Paraguay River basins of South America, with records from Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Paraguay, and Peru. A shoaling fish of the upper water column, it shares the bloodfin group's fondness for clear, warm, slightly acidic to neutral water and its energetic, open-water lifestyle. Though rarely starring in the hobby the way the common bloodfin tetra does, it is a hardy, undemanding species well-suited to a planted community aquarium.

Taxonomy & naming

Aphyocharax nattereri was described by Franz Steindachner in 1882, with the type locality recorded as Villa Bella (modern Parintins) on the Amazon River in Brazil. Because Steindachner placed the species in a different genus than Aphyocharax, the authority is presented in parentheses — (Steindachner, 1882) — indicating a subsequent generic transfer. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) is the governing authority for the valid name.

The genus Aphyocharax belongs to the large neotropical family Characidae and encompasses a group of small, slender-bodied tetras traditionally grouped as the bloodfins on account of the vivid red pigmentation that some members carry in the fins. The genus has undergone periodic revisions, and the exact boundaries and internal relationships of Aphyocharax remain subject to ongoing systematic work within the broader Characidae. A. nattereri is broadly sympatric across its extensive South American range with several congeners, and careful meristic examination is sometimes required to separate them in the field.

Morphology

Aphyocharax nattereri is a small, slender, laterally compressed characin. FishBase gives a maximum standard length of 1 in, and other sources indicate a typical adult range of 1–1.5 in, placing it among the smaller members of the genus. The body profile is streamlined and elongate, characteristic of an open-water schooling fish, with a relatively small head and a terminal mouth.

Colouration is largely silvery, with a pale to slightly yellowish body that reflects light in the water column. Fin coloration may include reddish or orange-tinted pigment in some individuals — a trait that gives the genus its common bloodfin association — though the extent of fin colour is variable and may be influenced by condition, sex, and population. Sexual dimorphism is modest: females are plumper in the belly when ripe, while males are slightly slimmer. The species lacks the bold chromatophore patterns of some tetras and is distinguished from close relatives primarily by meristic characters.

Habitat

Across its range — which spans the Amazon Basin and the Paraguay River system, with records from Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Paraguay, and Peru — Aphyocharax nattereri occupies freshwater environments in lowland tropical South America. Fishipedia notes a preference for habitats with sandy or pebbly substrates at shallow depths, often in the upper metre of the water column. Such biotopes typically include clear to slightly turbid streams and river margins with aquatic vegetation and submerged root tangles providing cover.

Water parameters recorded for the species and its closest relatives indicate a tolerance for a moderately broad range. FishBase and Seriously Fish both cite temperatures of 72–81 °F and a pH band of 5.5–7.5, consistent with the soft, mildly acidic to neutral conditions common across much of its Amazonian and Chaco-influenced range. Conductivity is generally low in these systems. The species is not known from high-altitude or extreme headwater environments.

Feeding

Aphyocharax nattereri is an opportunistic carnivore-omnivore in the wild, taking small invertebrates including worms, insect larvae, and small crustaceans, as noted in FishBase. Like most small characins it forages actively in the water column and near the surface, exploiting whatever small prey items are seasonally abundant.

In the aquarium the species is unfussy and accepts a variety of prepared and fresh foods. Dry foods — flake and micro-pellets — form a practical staple, while regular offerings of frozen or live Daphnia, brine shrimp, and small bloodworm improve condition and feeding response. Because of the fish's small size, food particle size should be kept small to ensure all individuals feed efficiently. Multiple small meals daily suit the species' metabolism better than a single large feeding.

Mating

Aphyocharax nattereri is an egg-scattering spawner with no parental care, following the typical open-spawning pattern shared by most small characins. Courtship involves active pursuit of females by males through the water column, with brief parallel swimming and vibrating behaviour preceding egg release. Spawning occurs among fine-leaved vegetation or over open substrate.

Conditioned groups in good health will spawn opportunistically, particularly when water temperature is in the upper part of the preferred range and there is access to fine-leaved plants or spawning substrate. Males compete loosely for access to receptive females, and a well-balanced group of several individuals generally produces more spawning activity than an isolated pair. There is no pair bond, and multiple males may participate in fertilising a single spawn.

Breeding

Breeding Aphyocharax nattereri in captivity is reported to be difficult relative to some other small tetras, though it follows the standard characin pattern. Fishipedia notes that conditioning in soft, slightly acidic water — targeting around pH 6.0 and a temperature near 77 °F — with a general hardness of roughly 2–5 dGH, as described for the close relative A. paraguayensis by Seriously Fish, provides the best starting conditions. A dedicated breeding tank with fine-leaved plants such as java moss, or synthetic spawning mops, provides substrate for the adhesive eggs.

After spawning, the adults should be removed promptly as they will consume both eggs and newly hatched fry. Eggs are small and hatch within approximately 24 hours at 77 °F. The tiny fry initially require microscopic first foods such as infusoria or commercial liquid fry foods before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii as they grow. Water quality during rearing is critical; small, frequent water changes help prevent ammonia buildup in the rearing container.

In the aquarium

Aphyocharax nattereri is an active, peaceful schooling fish that shows best in groups of at least six, which produce the natural shoaling behaviour and reduce the shyness individual fish can display in small numbers. A 23.5 in or larger aquarium with open swimming space in the upper and middle water column suits it well. The tank benefits from gentle to moderate water movement, subdued to moderate lighting, and fine-leaved or feathery plants along the margins for shelter and visual security.

Water conditions should mirror the species' South American origins: soft to moderately soft water, pH in the 6.0–7.5 range, and temperatures of 72–81 °F. It is compatible with a broad range of similarly sized, peaceful community fish — other small tetras, small rasboras, peaceful dwarf cichlids, and bottom-dwellers such as Corydoras — provided tankmates do not outcompete it at feeding time. The species is entirely inoffensive toward plants and does not damage décor. Its small size and undemanding nature make it a good choice for a well-planted community aquarium focused on South American biotopes.

Conservation

Aphyocharax nattereri has not been individually assessed by the IUCN Red List; no species-specific assessment was located during research for this article. The species occupies a wide natural range across the Amazon and Paraguay River systems — spanning Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Paraguay, and Peru — and is not known to face any acute or range-wide threat, which is broadly consistent with its large distributional footprint.

Large-basin Amazonian species of this type are generally not considered at immediate risk, though baseline population data are sparse for most small characins, and wide-ranging species can face local pressures from habitat degradation, deforestation, and floodplain modification. Because the species is not heavily represented in the ornamental trade relative to its more showy bloodfin relatives, collection pressure is unlikely to be a primary concern. Aquarists sourcing A. nattereri should favour captive-bred specimens where available.
