The bloodfin tetra is one of the most enduring aquarium fish in the hobby — a slender, silver-bodied characin whose crimson fins ignite at the slightest angle of light, making even a modest school feel electric. Native to the Paraná River basin of South America, it tolerates a wider temperature range than almost any other tropical tetra, thriving comfortably at 64 °F and surviving brief dips below that, a cold-hardiness that has seen populations establish themselves in warm-temperate waters far from Paraguay and Argentina. Its longevity in captivity — often exceeding a decade with reasonable care — and its forgiving nature make it an ideal choice for beginners and experienced aquarists alike, while its scientific profile as an egg-scatterer with pronounced sexual dimorphism continues to attract attention from researchers interested in the Characiformes.

Taxonomy & naming

Aphyocharax anisitsi was described by Carl H. Eigenmann and Charles H. Kennedy in 1903, based on material from Paraguay. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid name as Aphyocharax anisitsi Eigenmann & Kennedy, 1903. The species sits within the family Characidae, the largest family of freshwater fishes, and within the genus Aphyocharax — a small New World characin group in which more than ten species all share the vernacular name 'bloodfin tetras', owing to their shared red-finned appearance. The genus name Aphyocharax combines the Greek aphyo- (fingerling or small fish) with charax (a pointed stake, the root of Characidae more broadly), reflecting the genus's position among small, streamlined characins.

The specific epithet anisitsi honours the Paraguayan naturalist José Anísits (sometimes rendered Anisits), who facilitated natural history collections in Paraguay in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Within the genus, Aphyocharax anisitsi is considered the 'true' bloodfin tetra and is distinguished from congeners such as A. rathbuni by fin colouration and body proportions. The USGS notes that all members of the genus Aphyocharax share the bloodfin common name, so care is warranted when interpreting older aquarium literature that uses the name without specifying species.

The species belongs to the order Characiformes and is a representative of the vast Neotropical ichthyofauna of the Paraná–Paraguay river system, one of South America's most species-rich drainage networks.

Morphology

Aphyocharax anisitsi reaches a maximum total length of approximately 2 in, with most individuals in the aquarium slightly smaller. The body is slender, elongate, and strongly laterally compressed — a streamlined shape suited to life in the open water column of rivers and streams. The overall background colour is a bright, clear silver with a faint greenish or yellowish iridescence in good light, and the scales are large and reflective, catching available light across the flanks.

The defining feature is the intense red or blood-red colouration of the fins: the caudal, anal, pelvic, and to a lesser extent dorsal fins all carry vivid red pigmentation that contrasts sharply with the silver body. The caudal fin typically shows the deepest colour, and the red extends into the base of the caudal peduncle. The adipose fin, as in most characins, is present but small and unpigmented or lightly tinted.

Sexual dimorphism is present and takes an unusual form in this species. Mature males are noticeably slimmer in body outline than females, whose abdomens are fuller when gravid. More distinctively, mature males develop small hooks — bony spurs — on the rays of the anal and pelvic fins, a feature visible under magnification. Males also develop gill glands associated with reproductive signalling, structures that are absent in females. These features make sex determination straightforward in adult fish, even without gravid swelling.

Habitat

The bloodfin tetra is native to the Paraná River basin of South America, distributed across parts of Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina. Within that drainage it favours smaller watercourses — streams, creeks, and tributaries — rather than the main river channels, and particularly areas with shaded banks, floating vegetation, or overhanging plants that provide cover and reduce light intensity at the water surface. It occupies the upper and middle water layers, schooling in open water above the substrate.

Water conditions across its native range span a broad range of parameters. FishBase records pH 6.0–8.0 and hardness below 30 dH, while temperature across its native range can fall between 18 and 82 °F — an unusually wide thermal window for a characin marketed as a tropical fish. The cooler end of this range reflects the Paraná basin's seasonal variability and the influence of cooler Andean waters mixing into the system at higher altitudes and latitudes.

This thermal tolerance has contributed to the species establishing feral populations outside its native range. The USGS has documented its presence as an introduced species in some regions of the United States, where warm-water discharge or subtropical conditions permit year-round survival. Such establishment in non-native systems is an ongoing concern and a reason the species appears in ecological risk assessments for traded ornamental fishes.

Feeding

Aphyocharax anisitsi is an opportunistic carnivore-omnivore that feeds primarily on small invertebrates in the wild. FishBase and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service ecological risk summary both note a diet of worms, small insects, and small crustaceans, taken mainly in the upper and middle water column. In nature the species likely exploits both aquatic insects — larvae and emerged adults — and terrestrial invertebrates that fall to the surface, making it an opportunistic surface feeder as well as a mid-water hunter.

In the aquarium the bloodfin tetra is notably unfussy. It accepts dried foods — quality flake and small pellets — readily, and enriching the diet with frozen or live foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, bloodworm, and small aquatic invertebrates improves condition and helps maintain the depth of red pigmentation in the fins. Seriously Fish describes it as accepting both dried and frozen/live foods with equal willingness. Because it feeds primarily in the mid-to-upper water column, sinking pellets are largely ignored; foods that remain suspended or float briefly are more efficiently consumed.

Feeding small amounts twice daily rather than a single large meal suits its feeding ecology. As with most small characins, the digestive system is adapted to continuous foraging rather than gorging, and small regular meals reduce the accumulation of uneaten food in the aquarium.

Mating

Aphyocharax anisitsi is an egg-scattering open spawner. Males court females with active pursuit and lateral displays, positioning alongside a receptive female and pressing against her while showing the red finnage to advantage. The sexual dimorphism in this species — slim males with hooked anal and pelvic fin rays, fuller-bodied females — plays a role in mate recognition, and the fin hooks in males may function in mating contact, as has been proposed for other hook-bearing characins.

Spawning occurs among fine-leaved aquatic plants or over substrate into which eggs disperse freely. Unlike some characins that produce adhesive eggs, the bloodfin tetra's eggs are reported as largely non-adhesive — they may sink to the bottom or float briefly — rather than clinging to vegetation. Spawning groups in captivity can include multiple males and females, or can be managed as a single pair. FishBase records fecundity at around 345 eggs per female under one set of conditions, while other sources note that a productive spawning can yield 700–800 eggs, suggesting fecundity varies with female size and condition.

No parental bond or site fidelity is established during or after spawning. Adults scatter eggs and immediately lose interest, making the reproductive strategy purely broadcast-based with no investment in individual offspring beyond egg quality and number.

Breeding

Breeding Aphyocharax anisitsi in captivity is straightforward and has been achieved routinely since the species first entered the trade. Conditioned adults — fed well on live or frozen foods for several weeks — are best introduced to a separate breeding aquarium furnished with fine-leaved plants such as Java moss or synthetic spawning mops, which provide substrate for eggs to drift among. A gentle sponge filter provides water movement without the suction that would destroy eggs or fry.

Eggs are released over the spawning medium and hatch rapidly: FishBase records hatching at 20–25 hours, and Seriously Fish notes approximately 24 hours, at temperatures in the mid-20s Celsius. The eggs are largely non-adhesive and may be scattered across the substrate or drift among plants. Adults must be removed promptly after spawning is complete, as they will consume eggs without hesitation. The tiny fry become free-swimming within a day or two of hatching and initially require very small foods — infusoria, rotifers, or commercial liquid fry preparations — before taking newly hatched brine shrimp as they grow.

The bloodfin tetra is notably long-lived for a small characin. Seriously Fish notes a potential captive lifespan exceeding ten years under good conditions, an unusual characteristic in a fish of its size and one that argues for treating it as a long-term commitment rather than a transient aquarium resident. This longevity, combined with its ease of breeding, has made it a staple of fishkeeping for many decades.

In the aquarium

Aphyocharax anisitsi is widely regarded as one of the best beginner tetras: hardy, peaceful, colourful, and tolerant of a wider range of water conditions than most of its relatives. Seriously Fish recommends keeping a group of at least six, and a school of ten or more displays the striking red-finned colouration most effectively. The fish is active through the upper and middle water column and benefits from a tank with open swimming space at the front and denser planting toward the sides and rear.

The minimum tank length cited in care guides is 23.5 in, and this is realistic for a small group, though larger schools benefit from a longer footprint. Temperature may be kept anywhere between 18 and 82 °F, which makes the species one of the few tropical tetras suitable for unheated tanks in warm-temperate homes — an often-overlooked quality that expands its keeping options. Water pH should remain in the 6.0–8.0 range, and hardness tolerances are broad. The species does not require soft, acidic water and adapts well to the moderately hard, neutral water typical of most municipal supplies.

One behavioural note from Seriously Fish deserves attention: while the bloodfin tetra is peaceful with most tankmates, it may nip the fins of long-finned or slow-moving species. Keeping it in a large, active school largely redirects this tendency — fish absorbed in schooling dynamics are less likely to target neighbours — but caution is warranted with angelfish, guppies, or any species with trailing finnage. Robust, similarly sized tankmates such as other active tetras, small danios, rasboras, and peaceful corydoras catfish make ideal companions.

Conservation

Aphyocharax anisitsi is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent evaluation conducted on 4 March 2021 by Flávio Lima of Universidade Estadual de Campinas. The Least Concern designation reflects a wide natural distribution across the Paraná River basin — encompassing Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina — and no documented population declines severe enough to trigger a threat category.

The species is not currently considered at risk from the ornamental fish trade; it has been bred commercially for decades and virtually all aquarium stock is captive-bred, removing any meaningful collection pressure on wild populations. The primary ecological concern in its profile is the reverse of the usual conservation narrative: the bloodfin tetra is itself an established invasive fish in some areas outside its native range. The USGS Nonindigenous Aquatic Species database records its presence as an introduced species in regions of the United States, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has produced an ecological risk screening summary evaluating its establishment potential. Its cold tolerance and adaptability are precisely the traits that enable successful establishment in non-native waters.

Within its native Paraná basin, the broader pressures on the drainage — agricultural run-off, dam construction, deforestation of riparian zones — affect many species including the bloodfin tetra, though no species-specific data on population trends is currently documented in the IUCN assessment. Maintaining the ecological integrity of smaller tributary streams and creek systems, which the species prefers over main channels, is the habitat-level priority for its long-term security in its native range.
