Aphyocharax gracilis was described by Henry Weed Fowler in 1940. The valid name, as registered in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (California Academy of Sciences), is Aphyocharax gracilis Fowler, 1940; the species has remained in the genus Aphyocharax since its original description and no parenthetical authority is used.
Aphyocharax is placed in the family Characidae — the vast assemblage of characins that spans tropical South and Central America — and belongs to a group of small, silvery schooling fishes sometimes grouped informally as bloodfins or glowlight tetras depending on species. The genus includes better-known hobby fish such as Aphyocharax anisitsi (the bloodfin tetra) and Aphyocharax paraguayensis, and A. gracilis shares the Paraguay basin with several of its congeners. Within Characidae, intergeneric relationships continue to be revised with molecular data, but Aphyocharax remains a well-supported unit.
Morphology
Aphyocharax gracilis is a slender, elongate characin, as suggested by its epithet (Latin gracilis, slender). It reaches a maximum recorded standard length of 2 in. Like other Aphyocharax species, it is laterally compressed with a streamlined fusiform body well suited to open-water schooling in the middle of the water column.
The genus Aphyocharax typically shows a silvery to pale yellowish base coloration, often with a faint lateral stripe and clear to lightly pigmented fins; some species carry a vivid red or orange in the fins or base of the tail. Detailed meristic and color data specific to A. gracilis are sparse in the accessible literature, and the species should not be confused with close congeners from the same basin. It is a benthopelagic species, spending time both in the water column and near the substrate.
Habitat
Aphyocharax gracilis is distributed in the Paraguay River basin, a major drainage of central South America spanning parts of Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay, and Argentina. This is a warm, tropical freshwater system characterized by extensive lowland floodplains, seasonally inundated areas, lagoons, and both clear and turbid river channels.
The broader genus tends to favor slow-moving or still marginal habitats — backwaters, tributaries, and flooded areas with vegetation — rather than fast main-channel water. Related Aphyocharax species from the same basin have been recorded in soft, acidic conditions, though water chemistry across the Paraguay drainage varies considerably by sub-basin and season. Temperature in this tropical lowland drainage is warm year-round, consistent with FishBase's tropical classification for the species.
Feeding
Aphyocharax gracilis is an omnivore, as is typical for the genus. In the wild, small characins of this size class feed on tiny invertebrates — microcrustaceans, insect larvae, small terrestrial insects that fall to the water surface — as well as algae and fine organic detritus.
In captivity, the diet of related Aphyocharax species serves as a reasonable guide: they accept good-quality small flake and micro-pellet foods, and benefit from regular offerings of live or frozen fare such as Daphnia, baby brine shrimp, and Cyclops. A varied diet maintains condition and color; the species is a mid-water and surface-oriented feeder in keeping with its benthopelagic nature.
Mating
Like other members of Aphyocharax, A. gracilis is expected to be an egg-scattering open spawner with no parental care — the standard reproductive mode across most of Characidae. Males in spawning condition typically display to females by swimming alongside them with spread fins, and spawning takes place among fine-leaved vegetation or in open water near the substrate.
Spawning is likely triggered by seasonal cues in the wild — rising temperatures and water levels associated with the Paraguay basin's flood pulse — though in captivity related species can be brought to spawn year-round with appropriate conditioning. Females scatter small, adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants; the eggs receive no subsequent attention from either parent.
Breeding
Specific breeding records for Aphyocharax gracilis in captivity are not well documented in the available literature. Based on close congeners — particularly A. anisitsi, which is the most thoroughly studied — the species is likely bred by conditioning a small group at slightly elevated temperature with a protein-rich diet, then introducing them to a planted or moss-filled aquarium.
Eggs are small and adhesive, scattered among fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, and hatch within a day or two at tropical temperatures. Adults will consume eggs and newly hatched fry, so spawning medium should be removed or the adults separated promptly after spawning. Fry require very small first foods — infusoria or commercial liquid fry food — before advancing to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. Data on clutch size and fry rearing for this specific species remain sparse.
In the aquarium
Aphyocharax gracilis is not widely available in the mainstream aquarium trade, and most hobbyist experience with the genus derives from better-known congeners such as the bloodfin tetra. However, as a small schooling characin from a warm tropical drainage, its basic requirements are straightforward. It would be kept best in a group of six or more in a well-planted aquarium with soft, slightly acidic to neutral water, good filtration, and gentle flow.
Tankmates should be appropriately sized and peaceful — other small tetras, Corydoras catfish, and dwarf cichlids are typical companions for fish of this size and temperament. The species is a mid-water schooling fish and should be given open swimming space alongside planted zones that provide cover and reduce stress. Related Aphyocharax species from the Paraguay basin have been kept in soft, gently acidic water (around pH 5.5–6.5, low to moderate hardness) at temperatures in the mid-to-upper 20s Celsius, and these parameters serve as a reasonable starting guide for A. gracilis.
Conservation
Aphyocharax gracilis is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List, under criterion B1ab(iii), in an assessment dated 15 January 2021. The criterion B1 threshold reflects a restricted extent of occurrence, while the b(iii) qualifier indicates a continuing decline in the quality of its freshwater habitat. For a species confined to a single major drainage, ongoing pressures — including agricultural runoff, deforestation of riparian zones, and modification of the Paraguay basin's natural flood pulse — represent real risks to local population viability.
The Paraguay River system has experienced significant human modification, particularly in its upper reaches and the Pantanal floodplain, through cattle ranching, soy agriculture, and infrastructure development. While A. gracilis is not among the most prominent flagship species of the drainage, its Vulnerable status serves as a reminder that even abundant-seeming small characins are not immune to habitat-scale changes. Hobbyists can reduce any incidental pressure on wild populations by sourcing tank-bred specimens where available.
