Aphyocharax dentatus was described by Carl H. Eigenmann and Charles H. Kennedy in 1903 from material collected in the Paraguay River basin. The name dentatus — from the Latin dentatus, meaning toothed — alludes to the dentition that characterises the genus. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) records the authority as Eigenmann & Kennedy, 1903, and the species remains placed in Aphyocharax, a small genus of New World characins in the family Characidae.
Three names have been placed in synonymy with A. dentatus: Aphyocharax difficilis, A. nasutus, and A. pappenheimi. These synonyms reflect the confusion that attended early descriptions of small, superficially similar characins from the Paraná–Paraguay system. GBIF records 741 occurrence points for the species, confirming it as a real and valid taxon with substantial distributional documentation.
Morphology
Aphyocharax dentatus is a slim, elongate characin reaching a maximum of 3 in standard length according to FishBase. Like other members of the genus it has a fairly streamlined body suited to open-water schooling in the upper water column, with the characteristic small adipose fin of the Characidae. The fins are lightly pigmented with reddish or orange tints that give rise to common names referencing red fins in several languages.
The species is benthopelagic in habit, occupying the water column rather than the substrate, and forms active schools. Detailed comparative meristic data distinguishing it from congeners are not widely reported in popular sources; identification in the field relies partly on range and on the combination of body shape and fin colouration typical of Aphyocharax.
Habitat
The species is native to the Paraguay River basin and the upper Paraná drainage of central South America, with confirmed records from Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay. In Brazil, historical records include the Caracu and São Pedro streams of the upper Paraná system, though IUCN assessors note that the species has been extirpated from several upper rio Paraná stretches following dam construction.
Aphyocharax dentatus inhabits shallow, sandy-shored tributaries and floodplain lakes at relatively high altitude for a lowland South American characin. FishBase records water parameters of pH 6.0–7.6 and temperatures of 59–72 °F, placing it firmly in cool-to-temperate freshwater conditions rather than the warmer parameters associated with many aquarium tetras. This preference for cool, oxygenated water is consistent with its high-altitude upper-basin distribution.

FishBase assigns Aphyocharax dentatus a trophic level of 3.4, placing it as a generalised predator toward the lower end of carnivory. The IUCN assessment designates the species as a piscivore, noting that small fishes form a significant part of the diet — an unusual characterisation for a fish of this size, and one that suggests it targets fish larvae or very small cypriniform prey rather than larger vertebrates.
Data from the closely related Aphyocharax anisitsi, referenced in genus-level ecological summaries, indicate that Aphyocharax species also consume worms, small insects, and crustaceans, suggesting opportunistic feeding across small invertebrates and fish. In practice, the genus likely feeds throughout the water column on whatever small, slow, or larval prey is available.
Mating
Specific courtship observations for Aphyocharax dentatus are not well documented in available literature. FishBase records that spawning occurs in schools near the surface, a pattern consistent with the open-water, scatter-spawning behaviour documented in Aphyocharax anisitsi and typical of many characins. No pair-bond formation or territory defence is reported, and the species is assumed to spawn communally.
In the related A. anisitsi, spawning activity is most intense in the early morning following an active period, with eggs that are relatively heavy and sink after release. Analogous morning-peak spawning activity is plausible for A. dentatus given the shared genus ecology, though this has not been independently confirmed for this species in accessible sources.
Breeding
Aphyocharax dentatus is an egg-scattering open spawner with no parental care, following the standard characin breeding mode. Based on genus-level accounts and the FishBase note that spawning occurs in schools near the surface, breeding likely involves mass release of eggs into the water column or among fine-leaved plants, after which the adults take no further interest in the spawn.
Because A. dentatus is uncommon in the ornamental trade — the IUCN notes that congeners A. anisitsi and A. rathbuni are more favoured — detailed captive breeding accounts are sparse. Temperature should be kept in the 59–72 °F range appropriate to the species' cool-water origins. Removal of adults after spawning is standard practice for Aphyocharax; fry are assumed to require small live or prepared foods after hatching.

Aphyocharax dentatus is only an occasional presence in the aquarium hobby; the IUCN notes it probably enters the trade sporadically, while more colourful relatives such as A. anisitsi (bloodfin tetra) command greater commercial interest. Where kept, it should be housed in a group of at least six to express natural schooling behaviour and reduce individual stress.
The species' cool-water requirements — 59–72 °F, pH 6.0–7.6 — distinguish it from the majority of tropical community fish and make it better suited to a cooler-temperature setup or a temperate South American biotope than a standard tropical community tank. High-altitude, clear-water environments with good oxygenation should be replicated as closely as practical. Sandy substrate with open swimming space and some planted margins reflects the shallow tributary habitats the species occupies in the wild.
Conservation
Aphyocharax dentatus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment published in 2023 based on an evaluation completed 04 March 2021. Despite the LC status, the IUCN notes a decreasing population trend and identifies river damming in the upper rio Paraná as the principal threat: the species has been extirpated from upper Paraná stretches where it was historically present, though it remains widespread and common in the Paraguay basin.
The Paraguay River system, one of South America's largest drainages, continues to support viable populations, which is the primary basis for the Least Concern rating. The ornamental trade represents a minor pressure for this species, given its limited commercial appeal relative to congeners. Monitoring of Paraguay basin populations and management of dam impacts in the upper Paraná would be the relevant conservation actions should the species' status deteriorate.
