Astyanax brevimanus is a compact, highland characid described by Albert Günther in 1864 from material collected in Central America. It inhabits the upper river systems of the Río Grijalva drainage in the highlands of Chiapas, Mexico, and extends into the departments of Quiché and Baja Verapaz in Guatemala — a distribution centred on the Atlantic-slope headwaters of the Grijalva-Usumacinta basin. Reaching up to 3 in standard length, it is one of the more range-restricted members of the enormous genus Astyanax, which spans from the southwestern United States to Patagonia and encompasses well over 100 described species. It has not been formally assessed by the IUCN.

Taxonomy & naming

Astyanax brevimanus was described by the British Museum ichthyologist Albert Günther in 1864, making it one of the earlier-named species in a genus that has grown substantially since. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Astyanax brevimanus (Günther, 1864); the parenthetical authority reflects the fact that Günther originally placed the species in a different genus before it was transferred to Astyanax.

The taxonomy of Astyanax in Central and North America has been substantially revised in recent decades. Schmitter-Soto (2017) undertook a wide-ranging revision of the genus across the region, examining some 80 populations, describing 9 new species, and clarifying the limits of existing taxa including brevimanus. Eigenmann and Ogle (1907), in their annotated list of characin fishes in the United States National Museum, also recorded the species from the Atlantic slope and documented its presence in the Grijalva-Usumacinta watershed. These works collectively anchor the species' taxonomic identity within the large and taxonomically complex genus Astyanax, which is placed in the family Characidae.

Morphology

Astyanax brevimanus is a small, laterally compressed characid reaching a recorded maximum of 3 in standard length. Like most members of the genus, it displays the typical Astyanax bauplan: a moderately deep body, a single dorsal fin, a small adipose fin, a forked caudal fin, and the toothed jaws characteristic of the order Characiformes.

Many Astyanax species from highland Central American drainages share a relatively drab, silvery coloration with a dark caudal spot and a faint lateral stripe, and brevimanus likely conforms to this pattern, though detailed published colour descriptions in accessible literature are sparse. The specific epithet brevimanus — from the Latin brevis (short) and manus (hand) — likely refers to a feature of the pectoral fin or fin-ray proportions noted at the time of description, though a precise morphological key for distinguishing brevimanus from its closest congeners requires reference to the technical revision literature.

Habitat

Astyanax brevimanus occupies highland river systems in southern Mexico and Guatemala, specifically the upper tributaries of the Río Grijalva on the Atlantic slope, along with rivers draining the Quiché and Baja Verapaz highlands of Guatemala. The Grijalva is one of the principal rivers of southern Mexico, rising in the highlands of Chiapas and flowing north and northwest into the Gulf of Mexico via the Usumacinta system — the Atlantic-slope drainage to which this species is confined.

Highland tributaries of the Grijalva in Chiapas and the Cuchumatanes highlands of Guatemala are typically clear, cool, and well-oxygenated, flowing over rocky substrates through montane forest. Water temperatures in highland Central American streams at elevations above 1640–3281 ft can be substantially cooler than lowland tropical rivers, a fact relevant to aquarium care. Detailed water-chemistry data for the specific localities where brevimanus has been recorded are not widely reported in the available literature, but the highland provenance implies relatively cool temperatures, moderate to high oxygen levels, and clear water.

Feeding

No dedicated dietary study of Astyanax brevimanus appears in the literature accessible to this account. The genus Astyanax is broadly omnivorous, with most species documented as opportunistic feeders that take a mix of aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates, algae, plant material, and small fish depending on what is available in their local habitat. Highland stream populations of Astyanax tend to rely on allochthonous invertebrates — insects and other arthropods falling from riparian vegetation — as well as aquatic insect larvae.

In an aquarium setting, A. brevimanus would be expected to accept the same broad diet as other mid-sized Astyanax: quality flake or small pellet food, supplemented with frozen or live foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworm. As with most characids, a varied diet maintains condition and reduces the risk of nutritional deficiency.

Mating

No direct observations of mating behaviour in Astyanax brevimanus have been published in the accessible literature. As a member of Astyanax and the broader order Characiformes, it is almost certainly an egg-scattering open spawner with no parental care, the ancestral reproductive strategy of the clade. Males likely court females with chasing behaviour prior to spawning, releasing sperm over eggs as the female scatters them among fine-leaved vegetation or over the substrate.

In highland Central American streams, characid spawning is often linked to seasonal water-level and temperature changes associated with the dry and rainy seasons, which may cue reproductive activity. Fine-leaved aquatic plants and submerged woody debris are the typical egg deposition sites for Astyanax in highland streams, though this is inferred from the genus rather than direct observation of brevimanus specifically.

Breeding

Astyanax brevimanus has not been specifically documented as a captive breeding subject in the hobbyist or scientific literature accessible to this account, and dedicated breeding data are sparse. By analogy with other Astyanax species that have been bred in aquaria — including the widely kept A. mexicanus, the Mexican tetra — it is likely a straightforward egg-scatterer that deposits small adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or over the substrate without parental attention.

For any Astyanax from highland origins, breeders typically condition adults on live and frozen foods, keep water slightly cooler than for lowland tropical species, and use clumps of fine-leaved plants such as Java moss or synthetic spawning mops as spawning sites. Eggs and fry should be separated from adults immediately after spawning to prevent predation. Fry require small first foods — infusoria or commercial liquid fry food — before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp.

In the aquarium

Astyanax brevimanus is rarely encountered in the aquarium trade, and no established care literature exists for the species specifically. Where it does appear — typically in the hands of specialists in Central American native fishes or through hobbyist collecting expeditions — it would best be kept as a schooling species in a group of six or more, in a tank of at least 29.5–39.5 in length to allow free swimming.

Given its highland origin, the species likely does better at the cooler end of tropical aquarium temperatures — roughly 64–75 °F — rather than the warmer conditions suited to lowland Amazonian tetras. Clear, well-oxygenated water with moderate current and a planted or rocky setup approximating a highland stream would suit it. Diet should be varied, covering both prepared and live or frozen foods. As with other small Astyanax, it is best kept away from much smaller fish that might be nipped, and housed with peaceful tankmates of similar temperament and size.

Conservation

Astyanax brevimanus has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List. The species' restricted distribution — the upper Grijalva and associated highland drainages of Chiapas and highland Guatemala — places it within river systems that face real pressure from agriculture, deforestation, water diversion, and human settlement in highland Central America. The Chiapas highlands and the Guatemalan departments of Quiché and Baja Verapaz have experienced substantial land-use change over recent decades, and highland freshwater fish communities in these regions have not been systematically monitored.

Until a formal assessment is conducted, the conservation status of this species remains unknown. Its highland-stream habitat, if degraded, would present limited options for dispersal or refuge, as the upper Grijalva drainages are geographically bounded by watershed divides. Ichthyologists working on the Schmitter-Soto (2017) revision of Central American Astyanax have provided the most recent taxonomic framework within which a future conservation assessment could be conducted.
