Taxonomy & naming
Astyanax leopoldi was described in 1988 by Jacques Géry, Paul Planquette, and Pierre-Yves Le Bail. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Catalog of Fishes, CAS) treats the valid name as Astyanax leopoldi Géry, Planquette & Le Bail, 1988; no subsequent revision has moved it to a different genus, so no parenthetical authority is required. The type locality lies within the Approuague–Oyapock river system of the Guiana Shield.
Astyanax is an enormous and taxonomically contested genus within the family Characidae — one of the largest fish genera in existence, ranging from the Rio Grande drainage in the southern United States through much of South America. It encompasses everything from cave-adapted eyeless morphs to the robust schooling species of lowland South American rivers. A. leopoldi sits within the Guiana Shield assemblage of the genus, a set of species associated with the ancient, highly weathered uplands of north-eastern South America.
Morphology
Astyanax leopoldi reaches a maximum total length of around 2.5 in, with a standard length reported in the range of 2–2.5 in. The body plan is the typical characid form: moderately deep and laterally compressed, with the large eyes and silvery flanks common to schooling Astyanax. Like other members of the genus it carries the small adipose fin that is a hallmark of the characid family.
Detailed morphological data in the available sources are sparse beyond size and general body form. The species is a benthopelagic tropical fish, meaning it occupies both the water column and areas near the substrate, and is reported to seek out calmer marginal zones within otherwise fast-flowing environments.
Habitat
The Approuague and Oyapock are Guiana Shield rivers draining south-eastern French Guiana, the Oyapock forming the border with the state of Amapá in north-western Brazil. Both rivers arise on the ancient granitic and volcanic uplands of the Guiana Highlands, descend through series of rapids and falls, and empty into the Atlantic. Their waters are characteristically soft and acidic, darkened in the upper reaches by dissolved organic matter, warming to tropical temperatures in the lowland sections.
Within this drainage A. leopoldi is associated with fast-flowing sections — rapids and their margins — but favours the calmer zones on the edge of current rather than the full force of white-water. Seriously Fish notes the species is gregarious in these calm zones of rapids, suggesting it forms loose schools in sheltered pockets behind boulders or along vegetated banks. The IUCN classifies the habitat type as inland wetlands. Water temperature is approximately 77 °F; pH around 6.25 and hardness approximately 143 mg/L have been recorded for the habitat.
Feeding
Astyanax leopoldi is an opportunistic omnivore, consistent with the feeding habits of the genus broadly. Seriously Fish notes that the diet includes invertebrates and small fishes, and that in captivity the species accepts live and frozen foods such as bloodworm, brine shrimp, and similar morsels.
In the wild, Guiana Shield characids in fast-flowing habitats typically exploit a combination of drifting invertebrates, small benthic prey, and whatever terrestrial insects fall or wash into the current. In the aquarium, a varied diet of good-quality small pellets or flake supplemented regularly with frozen or live invertebrate foods keeps fish in good condition.
Mating
Astyanax leopoldi, like other members of the genus, is an egg-scattering open spawner. There is no pair bond and no parental care — adults scatter adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or over the substrate during a spawning event, then take no further interest in the eggs or fry. Males likely display to females through lateral presentation and colour intensification, the typical courtship mode in schooling characids.
Specific captive observations on courtship behaviour in A. leopoldi are limited in the available literature. Based on the Astyanax genus template, spawning is most active in the morning and can be triggered by a slight drop in temperature or a water change to simulate seasonal cues.
Breeding
Seriously Fish notes that A. leopoldi has been bred in captivity, though detailed accounts are sparse. As an egg-scatterer in the Astyanax mould, breeding follows the standard characid pattern: a conditioned group is placed in a dedicated spawning tank with fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, and eggs are scattered and fall among the vegetation or substrate. Adults will consume eggs given the opportunity, so the spawning medium should be removed or the adults separated promptly after spawning is observed.
Eggs are adhesive and hatch within a few days at tropical temperatures. Fry are initially tiny and require infusoria or liquid fry food before graduating to micro-worm and newly hatched brine shrimp. Water chemistry for breeding should replicate the soft, slightly acidic conditions of the Approuague and Oyapock basins — pH near 6.0–6.5 and low hardness — to promote good egg viability and hatch rates.
In the aquarium
Leopold's Tetra is suited to a stream biotope or a mature soft-water community aquarium. Because it is native to fast-flowing Guiana Shield rivers, it appreciates good oxygenation and some water movement — a powerhead or spray-bar return directing flow across the tank suits it well. Water chemistry should lean soft and slightly acidic: temperature around 75–79 °F, pH in the range 6.0–6.5, and low to moderate hardness matching the soft-water Guiana drainage.
The species is gregarious and should be kept in a group of at least six, both to reduce individual stress and to allow the natural schooling behaviour to express itself. It is a peaceful community fish appropriate with other small characids, dwarf cichlids, and Corydoras catfish of comparable size. Seriously Fish cautions that good oxygenation is important, consistent with the species' preference for the aerated margins of rapids. A tank with open swimming space and some current, planted with fine-leaved vegetation, makes an appropriate home.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Astyanax leopoldi as Least Concern (LC) in 2022, assessed by Donald Taphorn and Douglas Rodríguez-Olarte. The assessment notes that the principal threat is energy production and mining activity, which affects a minority of the range and is driving very rapid but geographically limited declines. Only 1–10% of the population occurs within protected areas across the entire range, a low figure that underscores the species' limited overlap with formally protected habitat.
Because both the Approuague and Oyapock river systems drain areas that include mining concessions and hydroelectric development — pressures common across the Guiana Shield — ongoing monitoring of river-basin conditions remains relevant to the species' long-term prospects. The current Least Concern assessment reflects the species' overall population size and distribution, which are presently sufficient to buffer the localised threats.
