Taxonomy & naming
Leporinus melanostictus was described by the British ichthyologist John Roxborough Norman in 1926. It belongs to the family Anostomidae, the headstanders, within the order Characiformes, and to the large genus Leporinus, whose more than 90 valid species (per the Catalog of Fishes, Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) are recognised across the Neotropics by their elongate, cylindrical bodies, terminal-to-slightly-subterminal mouths and characteristic oblique, head-down feeding posture.
The genus name Leporinus derives from the Latin lepus ("hare"), an old allusion to the fish's incisor-like front teeth, which recall a rabbit's bite and are well suited to scraping algae and biofilm from hard surfaces. Molecular work on Leporinus has repeatedly found substantial cryptic diversity within the genus — closely similar species distinguished mainly by banding pattern and fin colour — and L. melanostictus is confirmed as a valid, distinct taxon within that framework, restricted to the Approuague-Oyapock drainage on the French Guiana/Guyana border rather than being a wide-ranging Amazonian species.
Morphology
Leporinus melanostictus has the classic headstander build: an elongated, only moderately compressed body, a small terminal mouth set low on a blunt snout, and a single dorsal fin set well forward of the adipose fin, characteristic of Anostomidae. FishBase records a maximum standard length of 11 in and a maximum published weight of about 320 g, making it a solidly built, medium-to-large characin rather than a small nano species — a detail keepers should plan tank size around from day one.
Body colouration follows the dark-banded pattern typical of many Leporinus: a pale to yellowish-silver base crossed by darker blotches or bands along the flanks, giving rise to common names referencing "black-banded" or "black-spotted" patterning. As in related species, the incisor-like front teeth are adapted for grazing rather than for seizing prey, and the body shape lets the fish tip forward at a steep angle to work algae and biofilm off submerged surfaces.
Habitat
The species is documented from the Approuague and Oyapock river basins, the drainage systems that mark the border between French Guiana and Guyana in tropical South America; its type locality is the Oyapock River. This is a comparatively restricted range compared to wide-ranging Amazonian Leporinus species, and the available data does not indicate the species occurring more broadly across the Amazon basin proper.
FishBase classifies L. melanostictus as a freshwater, benthopelagic species associated with tropical South American river systems. Specific water-chemistry data (pH, hardness) for wild populations was not captured in the sources reviewed for this article; based on the well-documented conditions across the wider Leporinus genus and the Guiana Shield region generally, expect warm, soft, and mildly acidic-to-neutral river water with structure from submerged wood, roots and marginal vegetation — but treat the precise range as data sparse for this specific species rather than assumed.

Leporinus melanostictus is a grazer and aufwuchs feeder in the mould of its genus: it works algae and biofilm off wood, stone and plant surfaces in a distinctive oblique, head-down posture, and it supplements that diet with small invertebrates picked from the same surfaces. Like other Leporinus, it is also documented to eat soft aquatic plant matter readily, which is a defining trait of the genus in both wild and aquarium settings.
In the aquarium, Leporinus species are kept on a predominantly vegetable-based diet — blanched spinach, zucchini and other vegetables, algae wafers and quality flake or pellet foods — supplemented with occasional live or frozen protein such as bloodworm or brine shrimp. A diet skewed too heavily toward protein, or a tank without enough algae or soft plant matter for the fish to graze, is associated with increased fin-nipping toward tankmates as the fish looks for something else to occupy its grazing instinct.
Mating
No species-specific courtship description for Leporinus melanostictus was found in the sources reviewed. Across the wider genus, spawning is linked to seasonal river cues — rising water levels, temperature increases and shifts in flow associated with the onset of rains — and pairs are reported to move into dense submerged aquatic vegetation ahead of spawning. Breeding in home aquaria is rarely documented for Leporinus as a genus — a handful of species have spawned in large, heavily planted setups, and some Leporinus are farmed commercially for the food-fish or aquarium trade, but L. melanostictus specifically has no confirmed aquarium-breeding record in the sources available here. Prospective breeders should treat successful home spawning as a long shot rather than a realistic project, and should not expect any form of parental care or nest-guarding behaviour from this species.

Leporinus melanostictus is a large, active, long-lived fish that needs to be sized for its real adult length of around 11 in, not for its appearance as a juvenile. Hobby care guides for the genus specify a minimum footprint on the order of 6 feet by 2 feet by 2 feet (roughly 180 x 60 x 23.5 in) once the fish is mature, with strong external filtration and high oxygenation to handle a large, active grazer's bioload and appetite for well-oxygenated water.
As Leporinus mature they become territorial and are well-documented fin-nippers, making them a poor match for slow-moving or long-finned community fish such as bettas or angelfish; they are better suited to a large, robust community of fast, similarly sized tankmates, or kept as a feature fish with cichlids and other characins that can hold their own. Because the species grazes readily on soft plant matter, keepers should expect it to sample or shred delicate aquarium plants and should furnish the tank with hardy, tough-leaved species, driftwood and rockwork instead of a delicate planted layout. Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Leporinus melanostictus as Least Concern. Its range within the Approuague and Oyapock basins is comparatively small and specific relative to widespread Amazonian Leporinus species, which makes the health of that particular drainage more directly relevant to the species than for wider-ranging relatives, though there is no indication in the sources reviewed of a significant current threat. As with many characins from the Guiana Shield region, ongoing habitat pressures such as mining, deforestation and associated sedimentation across South American river basins generally are long-term watch items rather than documented acute threats to this species specifically.
