Hemigrammus parana is a small characin reaching just over 1 in standard length, discovered in the backwater margins of the upper Paraná basin in southeastern Brazil and formally described in 2008. Unassuming in size, it is set apart from its congeners by a clean, triangular black spot anchored to the middle rays of the caudal fin and by the conspicuous absence of a humeral spot — a combination of features unusual among Hemigrammus. It inhabits densely vegetated, shallow backwaters of the rio Paraná, rio Grande, and rio Paranaíba drainages and has been assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN.

Taxonomy & naming

Hemigrammus parana was described in 2008 by Marcelo R. de Carvalho, Francisco Langeani, and co-authors in Zootaxa (volume 1724, pages 52–60). The holotype (DZSJRP 6217, 1 in SL) was collected from the rio Paraná in São Paulo State, and the species epithet directly commemorates that river — the rio Paraná — which lends its name to both the type locality and the drainage system the species inhabits.

The species belongs to Hemigrammus, a large neotropical genus of small characins in the family Characidae, historically distinguished from Hyphessobrycon by the presence of scales on the lower lobe of the caudal fin. Within the genus, H. parana is most readily separated from the superficially similar H. levis by differences in anal-fin ray count and tooth morphology, and from other congeners by the distinctive caudal-fin spot and the lack of any humeral marking. The valid name is recorded in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes as Hemigrammus parana Marinho, Carvalho, Langeani & Tatsumi, 2008.

Morphology

H. parana is a small, slender characin with a maximum recorded standard length of 1 in. Like other Hemigrammus, it has a moderately compressed body, a terminal mouth, and the caudal-fin squamation that defines the genus. The most diagnostic feature is a sharply defined black spot on the middle rays of the caudal fin, described in the original account as triangular to rectangular in outline and extending from the base to the tip of those rays — a mark clearly visible in even small preserved specimens.

Equally diagnostic is what is absent: H. parana entirely lacks the humeral spot that is present in many of its congeners. The anal fin has 21–23 unbranched soft rays, with a modal count of 21; this count, together with tooth morphology, separates the species from H. levis. Overall coloration in life is not extensively described in available sources; the species is presumed to follow the general Hemigrammus pattern of a silvery, translucent body with the melanin pigment concentrated in the caudal spot.

Habitat

The species is known from the upper Paraná basin of southeastern Brazil, with records from the rio Paraná, rio Grande, rio Paranaíba, and rio São José dos Dourados drainages, including the Ilha Solteira reservoir area in São Paulo and Mato Grosso do Sul states; additional records exist from Minas Gerais in the rio Grande drainage near Conceição das Alagoas.

FishBase characterises it as benthopelagic, occurring at depths of 0–3 ft in backwater margins associated with stands of Poaceae and aquatic macrophytes including Ceratophyllum, Egeria densa, Eichhornia, Ludwigia, and Salvinia. These are slow to still, well-vegetated marginal habitats typical of the Paraná floodplain margins — sheltered bays and lagoons where fine-leaved and floating plants provide cover and food. The distribution within the upper Paraná system suggests a degree of endemism, though survey coverage of small characins in this drainage is uneven.

Feeding

H. parana is an omnivore. Stomach-content analyses reported in FishBase document the consumption of the filamentous alga Spirogyra, small crustaceans (Cladocera), sediment particles, and unspecified organic matter — a diet typical of a small characin foraging opportunistically in vegetated backwaters, taking both algal and animal material.

In the aquarium, H. parana would be expected to accept standard small-characin foods: fine-grade flake or micro-pellets, live or frozen Daphnia and Cyclops, baby brine shrimp, and similar invertebrate offerings. The algal component of its natural diet suggests some acceptance of spirulina-based foods or vegetable matter, though specific captive-feeding data are not available.

Mating

No specific mating observations for H. parana have been published. Based on the reproductive biology characteristic of Hemigrammus and the broader characid family, the species is presumed to be an open-water egg-scatterer with no parental care — the default mode across Characidae. Males likely display to females in the presence of fine-leaved vegetation or other spawning substrate.

As in many small characins, mating activity is expected to be triggered by water temperature and photoperiod, with spawning occurring when conditions are favourable. The small body size and shallow vegetated habitat of H. parana are consistent with spawning among aquatic macrophytes such as Ceratophyllum or Egeria, which are documented components of its natural environment.

Breeding

No captive breeding accounts for H. parana appear in the available literature, and the species is not established in the ornamental hobby to any appreciable degree. By analogy with other small Hemigrammus species, breeding in the aquarium would most likely follow the standard characid pattern: eggs scattered over or among fine-leaved plants or synthetic spawning mops, with adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs, no parental care, and adults that will consume eggs given the opportunity.

Incubation times and fry-rearing requirements are undescribed for this species. Until captive-breeding accounts are published, practitioners should treat the species as requiring the same conditions documented for the genus broadly: slightly acidic to neutral, soft to moderately hard, warm water (approximately 75–82 °F); removal of adults after spawning; and very fine first foods for the fry.

In the aquarium

Hemigrammus parana is rarely if ever encountered in the ornamental fish trade. Its natural habitat — densely planted, shallow backwater margins of clear-water upper Paraná tributaries — suggests it would do best in a well-planted aquarium with soft, slightly acidic to neutral water and gentle filtration. A species or biotope setup replicating the fine-leaved macrophyte beds it inhabits in the wild (Ceratophyllum, Egeria) would be an appropriate framework.

At 1 in maximum standard length it is a very small fish, suitable for nano or species aquaria rather than large community tanks. No specific care data are published; hobbyists keeping this species should treat it as a delicate, plant-associated miniature characin, keep it in a group, avoid boisterous tankmates, and provide a varied diet of small live or frozen invertebrate foods supplemented with prepared micro-feeds.

Conservation

Hemigrammus parana is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List (assessment date: 7 November 2018). The IUCN notes a high resilience score, with a minimum population doubling time of fewer than 15 months, and a low fishing vulnerability index (10 out of 100), consistent with a small, fast-reproducing characin not targeted by commercial or subsistence fisheries.

The species' range is confined to the upper Paraná basin, a system that has been substantially altered by hydroelectric impoundment — the Ilha Solteira reservoir appears in the distribution records — and by agricultural and urban runoff. While the Least Concern designation reflects adequate overall population resilience, the quality and extent of the marginal macrophyte habitats on which H. parana depends are subject to ongoing pressure from reservoir management, introduced species, and catchment-level land-use change in one of Brazil's most intensively farmed regions. Monitoring of small-bodied fishes in modified Paraná habitats remains patchy.
