Brachyalestes comptus was first described in 1976 by Roberts and Stewart, with the type locality near the Inga hydroelectric dam on the Lower Congo River in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) records the valid name as Brachyalestes comptus (Roberts & Stewart, 1976); the parenthetical authority reflects its transfer from its original genus of description.
For several decades the species was treated as Brycinus comptus and catalogued within that broad, paraphyletic assemblage of African tetras. A 2023 phylogenomic and morphological study by Vari and colleagues revalidated the genus Brachyalestes and reassigned a number of Brycinus-group species to it based on both molecular and morphological evidence, placing B. comptus among them. Brachyalestes is a member of the family Alestidae — the African tetras — a purely Old World group that parallels the South American characids in body form and ecology but is phylogenetically distinct.
The specific epithet comptus is Latin, meaning 'adorned' or 'neat', though no detailed account of what feature prompted the name has been widely documented in accessible sources.
Morphology
Brachyalestes comptus is a slender, laterally compressed tetra reaching a maximum recorded total length of 2.5 in, making it a small species within the alestid family. FishBase records it as a pelagic species, suggesting a mid-water to open-water lifestyle rather than a bottom-associated one. Like most alestids it likely has the rounded, somewhat fusiform body plan typical of the group, with a forked caudal fin and a small adipose fin, though detailed published morphological descriptions are sparse in the accessible literature.
Beyond its size and general alestid body plan, specific information on colouration, fin ray counts, and meristic characters is not well documented in sources currently available. The species is unlikely to bear the bold stripes or red-and-silver colouring of the larger, more studied Congo alestids, but the exact appearance of living specimens in the wild has not been described in detail in accessible sources.
Habitat
Brachyalestes comptus is native to the Congo River basin of Central Africa. The type locality is near the Inga hydroelectric dam in the Lower Congo River, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the species is also recorded from the Middle Congo River in the Republic of Congo, including tributaries such as the Djiri River near Brazzaville. The 2009 IUCN assessment noted that it may be more widespread within the basin — potentially occurring in both lower and upper Congo — than the original type locality records indicated.
The IUCN classifies its habitat as freshwater wetlands, specifically permanent rivers and streams and seasonal marshes. FishBase describes the species as pelagic within tropical freshwaters, indicating it occupies the open water column rather than the substrate. Records from the Djiri River survey associate the wider Congo alestid fauna with plant communities in floodplain systems, suggesting that seasonally vegetated margins and floodplain wetlands may form part of B. comptus's habitat in the Republic of Congo.
Feeding
FishBase assigns Brachyalestes comptus a trophic level of 3.1, placing it as a low-level carnivore in the Congo food web — consistent with a diet of small invertebrates such as insects, insect larvae, zooplankton, and small crustaceans typical of pelagic, open-water alestids. No field study of its gut contents has been reported in the accessible literature.
By analogy with other small Brachyalestes and alestid species of similar size and ecology, a diet centred on aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates taken in the water column is the most reasonable inference. High resilience is noted (population doubling time under 15 months), which indirectly suggests adequate prey availability within its range, but detailed dietary studies remain absent from published records.
Mating
No published account of the mating or courtship behaviour of Brachyalestes comptus in the wild has been located in accessible sources. As an alestid tetra in the broad Brycinus-group tradition, the species is expected to be an egg-scatterer with no parental care, spawning adhesive eggs among aquatic vegetation or over open substrate as do related African tetras.

Given that the IUCN notes the population trend as unknown and the species has not been commercially traded or propagated in captivity at any documented scale, reproductive biology remains one of the many data gaps that informed the 2009 Data Deficient assessment.
In the aquarium
Brachyalestes comptus does not appear in the mainstream aquarium trade and has not been established in hobbyist culture. No published care guidelines exist in accessible hobby sources. The species is primarily of scientific and conservation interest at present.
Should specimens become available, general alestid care principles would apply as a starting point: a spacious, well-filtered aquarium with open swimming room; temperatures consistent with the tropical Congo basin (roughly 73–81 °F); neutral to slightly acidic water reflecting the river's chemistry; and a varied diet of live, frozen, and high-quality prepared foods. Any serious husbandry work would contribute genuinely new information, as virtually nothing has been published on the species in captivity.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Brachyalestes comptus as Data Deficient (DD) in February 2009 (published 2010, assessment ID 7948849). The assessors noted that the species was known at that time primarily from the type locality near the Inga hydroelectric dam on the Lower Congo River, but that it may be more widespread in the basin. Population trend is listed as unknown. The assessment was flagged as needing updating, and no subsequent reassessment has been published in accessible records.
The proximity of the type locality to the Inga dam complex — one of the largest hydroelectric installations in Africa — is a potential concern, as dam construction and operation alter flow regimes, sediment transport, and habitat structure in the Lower Congo. Whether B. comptus has been affected by dam-related habitat changes is not documented. The Congo Basin is under increasing pressure from mining, deforestation, and industrial development, all of which threaten freshwater habitats, but specific threat data for this species are lacking. Filling those data gaps through targeted surveys is the most immediate conservation priority.
