Taxonomy & naming
Brachyalestes epuluensis was described by Eva Decru, Emmanuel Vreven, Oumar Sadio, and Jos Snoeks in 2016, with the Epulu River drainage in the Democratic Republic of Congo as its type locality. The species authority is written with parentheses — (Decru, Vreven, Sadio & Snoeks, 2016) — indicating that the original description placed it in a genus other than Brachyalestes, and it was subsequently moved. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Catalog of Fishes) is the governing authority for the valid name.
The genus Brachyalestes itself had a complicated taxonomic history. For many decades it was treated as a synonym of or indistinct from Brycinus, a large, heterogeneous assemblage of African tetras in the family Alestidae. A 2023 phylogenomic and morphological revision by Stiassny and colleagues formally revalidated Brachyalestes as a distinct genus separate from Brycinus, placing B. epuluensis within that reinstated genus. The species epithet epuluensis refers to the Epulu River, the primary water body from which the holotype material was collected.
Morphology
Brachyalestes epuluensis reaches a maximum recorded size of approximately 4.5 in standard length, based on FishBase records for male or unsexed specimens. Like other alestid tetras it is likely a fusiform, laterally compressed fish with the moderately large scales, forked tail, and single dorsal fin typical of the family. Beyond size and its meristic characters used in the original description, detailed published morphological data accessible from current sources is sparse.
The genus Brachyalestes is distinguished from the closely related Brycinus by a suite of phylogenomic and morphological characters established in the 2023 revision; the specific characters separating B. epuluensis from congeners are contained in the original 2016 description. No distinctive colour pattern or external feature that would reliably identify this species in the field has been widely documented in the secondary literature.
Habitat
The species is recorded from the Epulu River and its affluents, which form part of the Aruwimi drainage system in the middle Congo River basin of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Epulu is a blackwater to clearwater forest river flowing through the Ituri rainforest, a lowland equatorial forest environment characterised by dense canopy cover, leaf-litter substrates, and soft, acidic to near-neutral water.
FishBase classifies the species as benthopelagic, freshwater, and tropical. Precise water-parameter data for the Epulu drainage as it relates to this species are not available in current secondary sources. The surrounding Ituri forest provides heavy riparian shade, and streams of this type typically carry low conductivity, low to moderate pH, and stable warm temperatures consistent with equatorial lowland conditions.
Feeding

Given its origins in the soft, warm forest rivers of the Ituri region, a hobbyist setting up a speculative biotope would likely replicate conditions typical of Congo basin forest streams: temperatures in the mid-to-upper 20s Celsius, low conductivity, and pH in the slightly acidic to neutral range, with subdued lighting, tannin staining from leaf litter, and minimal current.
At approximately 4.5 in standard length, B. epuluensis would require a medium to large aquarium if it were to become available. No statements about temperament, social behaviour, or compatibility can be made responsibly from currently available data.
Conservation
Brachyalestes epuluensis has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List as of 2025 and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). The species was described only in 2016, and many recently described fish from the Congo basin have not yet been formally evaluated, reflecting the pace at which the IUCN assessment process catches up with new descriptions from biodiverse but under-studied regions.
The Epulu River lies within a zone of significant conservation concern. The Ituri forest is subject to ongoing pressure from artisanal mining, logging, and agricultural encroachment, and the Congo basin's ichthyofauna as a whole is poorly surveyed. The restricted, endemic range of B. epuluensis — apparently confined to one tributary system within the Aruwimi drainage — would make it potentially vulnerable to localised habitat disturbance, but without a formal assessment no conclusions can be drawn about its current population status or threat level.
