Brachyalestes affinis is a mid-sized African tetra of the family Alestidae, native to a broad arc of river systems along the East African coast and interior — from the Webi Shebeli and Juba drainages of Somalia and Ethiopia south through the Tana, Galana-Sabaki, Pangani, Ruvu, Wami, and Rufiji systems of Tanzania. Taxonomy & naming

Brachyalestes affinis was described by Albert Günther in 1894. The valid name, as maintained in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (the authority for this atlas), is Brachyalestes affinis (Günther, 1894); the parenthetical authority indicates the species was originally described under a different genus before being placed in Brachyalestes. The genus Brachyalestes belongs to the family Alestidae — the African tetras — a speciose family of characiform fishes distributed across tropical Africa, distinct from the New World tetras (Characidae) despite a superficially similar body plan.

The IUCN 2010 assessment, authored by Hanssens and Snoeks, applied the species to the broad grouping of large East African river systems and noted the assessment is due for updating. No subspecies are currently recognised.
