Brachychalcinus nummus is a small, deep-bodied characid described by James E. Böhlke in 1958 from South America. Like its congeners it carries the strongly compressed, disc-like body form that gives the genus its informal identity among aquarists familiar with related species such as the better-known discus tetra (B. orbicularis). The species has not been assessed by the IUCN and remains poorly documented in both the scientific and hobbyist literature.

Brachychalcinus nummus was described by the American ichthyologist James E. Böhlke in 1958. The valid name is recorded in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes as Brachychalcinus nummus Böhlke, 1958. Because it was described in Brachychalcinus, where it remains, the authority is written without parentheses.

Brachychalcinus belongs to the family Characidae, the largest family of freshwater fishes in the Neotropical region. The genus is characterised by a markedly deep and laterally compressed body, giving its members a coin- or disc-like outline. The specific epithet nummus is Latin for 'coin', a direct allusion to this rounded body shape that runs through the genus. The genus was established by Günther in 1864 and includes a small number of South American species distributed across Atlantic and Amazonian drainages. The placement of Brachychalcinus within Characidae has been broadly stable; recent molecular and morphological work on characid phylogenetics treats it within the large and heterogeneous core of the family.

Morphology
