Brachychalcinus parnaibae is a small, deep-bodied characid described by Roberto Reis in 1989 from a freshwater pond in the Serra das Confusões region of Piauí, Brazil. Endemic to the Parnaíba River basin — one of the largest river systems in northeastern Brazil — it is a compact species reaching about 3 in standard length, marked by conspicuous longitudinal dark stripes that it shares with its close relative Brachychalcinus reisi. It belongs to a mainly South American genus of laterally compressed, disc-like characids whose common name in the hobby (when used at all) tracks the genus rather than the species.

Brachychalcinus parnaibae was described by the Brazilian ichthyologist Roberto E. Reis in 1989. The type locality is a pond in the Serra das Confusões area of the state of Piauí, within the Parnaíba River basin of northeastern Brazil. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the governing authority for the valid name Brachychalcinus parnaibae Reis, 1989; the authority is not parenthesised because the species has never been transferred to another genus.

The genus Brachychalcinus belongs to the large and diverse family Characidae. It comprises a small cluster of deep-bodied, laterally compressed characids distributed across river basins of South America, superficially resembling miniature silver dollars in body shape. Work by Garcia-Ayala and colleagues (2024) published in Neotropical Ichthyology examined the morphology of Brachychalcinus species in detail, noting that B. parnaibae and B. reisi share a distinctive pattern of conspicuous longitudinal dark stripes that sets them apart from other members of the genus.

The specific epithet parnaibae is a Latinisation of "Parnaíba", the name of the river basin in which the type locality lies. The Parnaíba River drains a large portion of the semi-arid northeastern interior of Brazil, and the basin harbours a distinctive ichthyofauna with a notable proportion of endemic species.
