Taxonomy & naming
Brachychalcinus sabaji was described in 2024 by Garcia-Ayala, Lima, Gama, and Benine, published in Neotropical Ichthyology. The holotype (IEPA 6879, 2.5 in SL) was collected from the rio Mapaoni, a tributary of the rio Jari basin in Amapá state, Brazil (02°11′36″N 54°35′15″W). Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) is the authority for valid names; within Brachychalcinus the new species was distinguished from its nearest congener, B. reisi, primarily by the proportionally longer predorsal spine (5.2–6.0 % SL versus 3.2–5.1 % SL in B. reisi) and longer preanal spine (5.0–5.7 % SL versus 3.4–4.7 % SL).
The family placement followed here is Characidae as used in the broad sense (sensu Eschmeyer). FishBase currently assigns the genus Brachychalcinus to Acestrorhamphidae, reflecting an ongoing and unsettled debate over the boundaries of Characidae and related Neotropical families; users of the site should be aware that classifying authorities differ on this point. The genus name derives from the Greek brachys (short) and chalkos (brass or copper), an allusion to the compact, somewhat metallic body form shared across the genus. The specific epithet sabaji is a patronym honouring Mark Henry Sabaj of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University (ANSP), in recognition of his contributions to the ichthyology of Neotropical fishes.
Morphology
Brachychalcinus sabaji reaches a maximum recorded standard length of 3 in (approximately 3 in SL). It is a compact, deep-bodied characid with the laterally compressed form typical of the genus. Key meristic characters include 13 dorsal soft rays and 27–31 anal soft rays, the latter count being diagnostically useful within the genus.
The colour pattern in preservative is pale beige with dark chromatophores concentrated on the dorsal surface. Two humeral blotches are present immediately behind the operculum: the first is conspicuous, the second faint. The most striking feature is a series of 16–17 dark, wavy longitudinal stripes running the length of the body, formed by dark pigmentation concentrated on the margins of individual scales; these stripes give the flanks a lined or streaked appearance quite unlike the plain or spotted patterning of most congeners. Fins carry scattered dark pigmentation without strong markings.
Sexual dimorphism is subtle but consistent: mature males bear small bony hooks on the branched rays of the anal fin, a secondary sexual character found across many characid lineages and used in field identification of sex.
Habitat
The species is known from the rio Jari basin and its tributaries in Amapá state, and from the rio Araguari, a coastal drainage also in Amapá and adjacent Pará, in northern Brazil. The original description also tentatively records one specimen from the rio Tapajós, though that record requires confirmation. These are Amazonian and Amazonian-fringe systems draining the Guiana Shield foothills and the eastern Amapá lowlands.
FishBase categorises the species as a tropical freshwater, benthopelagic fish, consistent with the habitat preferences of other Brachychalcinus — clear to slightly turbid lowland streams and river tributaries with moderate current and access to marginal vegetation. Detailed habitat notes for collection sites in the original description are not yet publicly available beyond the type-locality coordinates; the rio Jari system drains a mosaic of terra firme forest and cerrado-transition environments, and water chemistry at the specific sites has not been published in the sources available.
Feeding
No published dietary data specific to Brachychalcinus sabaji have appeared in the literature available at time of writing. By analogy with other members of Brachychalcinus and small characids of similar body form from Amazonian lowland systems, the species is likely an opportunistic omnivore or insectivore, foraging near the bottom and mid-water for small invertebrates, insect larvae, and organic detritus.
In the aquarium, cognate Brachychalcinus species accept a wide variety of small prepared foods including fine-grade flake and micro-pellets, supplemented with frozen or live foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp nauplii, and bloodworm. Until the species becomes more widely available and better studied in captivity, keepers should treat it as a generalised small characid omnivore.
Mating
No specific observations of mating behaviour in Brachychalcinus sabaji have been published. Within Characidae broadly, and within Brachychalcinus specifically, the reproductive guild is that of egg-scattering open spawners: males court females with lateral displays and brief chasing sequences, and pairs scatter adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or over substrate, without pair-bond formation.
The bony anal-fin hooks documented in mature males of B. sabaji are a secondary sexual character shared widely across Characidae and are thought to play a role in aligning the pair during spawning rather than in direct competition; they may also assist in maintaining close contact with the female as eggs and milt are released. No parental care is expected in this genus.
Breeding
Brachychalcinus sabaji has not been bred in captivity in any documented account available at the time of description, owing to its very recent formal description in 2024 and limited availability in the aquarium trade. Based on the reproductive biology of related Brachychalcinus and other small Neotropical characids, breeding would be expected to follow the standard egg-scattering model: conditioned adults spawning over fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, with small adhesive eggs that hatch in 24–48 hours under warm conditions, and fry requiring fine first foods such as infusoria or commercial liquid fry food before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp.
Until the species enters the ornamental trade and breeding attempts are documented, detailed captive-breeding guidance is speculative. Data sparse.
In the aquarium
Brachychalcinus sabaji is essentially unknown in the aquarium hobby as of 2024–2025 and is not commercially available. Its small size (to about 3 in SL) and the striped body pattern suggest it would be an attractive subject for a biotope or species aquarium once availability improves. By analogy with other Brachychalcinus, a group of six or more individuals in a well-planted aquarium of moderate size — around 31.5–39.5 in in length — with gentle to moderate flow and soft, slightly acidic to neutral water matching its Amazonian origins would be a reasonable starting point.
Little is known about compatibility, sensitivity to water quality, or minimum tank requirements in captivity. Aquarists acquiring wild-caught specimens from the rio Jari region should be prepared for standard Amazonian water-chemistry preferences and the general husbandry requirements of small, active characids. Until captive experience accumulates, this species should be treated as a specialist subject rather than a general community fish.
Conservation
Brachychalcinus sabaji was described too recently (2024) to have received a formal IUCN Red List assessment at the time of writing; no independent assessment record appears on the IUCN database. However, the authors of the original description evaluated the species against IUCN criteria and concluded that it qualifies as Least Concern, finding no imminent threats in its area of occurrence in the rio Jari and rio Araguari systems of Amapá state.
The rio Jari basin has historically faced pressure from large-scale industrial and agricultural development, including hydropower projects and managed timber operations, but the specific collection localities of B. sabaji within the basin have not been identified as acutely threatened. Given the very limited distributional data available — a handful of tributary records and one tentative Tapajós record — ongoing monitoring as the species becomes better known would be prudent. No specific conservation measures are in place for this species.
