Brachychalcinus copei is a deep-bodied, disc-shaped characid found across a broad sweep of Cis-Andean South America — the Amazon, Orinoco, and Paraguay drainage systems spanning Bolivia, Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Guyana, and Suriname. Named for the celebrated American palaeontologist Edward Drinker Cope, it was first described from Tabatinga on the upper Amazon in 1882 and remains one of seven valid species in the genus Brachychalcinus, a small group of shallowwater characins whose compressed, almost circular body profile gives them their common name. Assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List in 2021, the species is rarely seen in the hobby but holds interest for keepers attracted to its unusual shape and wide Amazonian distribution.

Taxonomy & naming

Brachychalcinus copei was originally described by Franz Steindachner in 1882 as Stethaprion copei, with the type locality given as Tabatinga in the upper Amazon basin. The genus Brachychalcinus was subsequently established by George Albert Boulenger in 1892, and the species was transferred to it, yielding the current combination with the authority parenthesised to indicate the name change. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records Brachychalcinus copei (Steindachner, 1882) as the valid name.

A comprehensive revision of the genus published in Neotropical Ichthyology in 2024 by Garcia-Ayala and colleagues confirmed B. copei as one of seven valid Brachychalcinus species and provided detailed morphological diagnoses for each. The genus belongs to the subfamily Stethaprioninae within Characidae and is defined by the presence of characteristic triangular predorsal and preanal spines. An earlier systematic revision by Reis (1989) laid the phylogenetic groundwork that subsequent workers, including the 2024 team, built upon.

The species epithet copei honours Edward Drinker Cope (1840–1897), the prolific American palaeontologist and herpetologist who also contributed substantially to Neotropical ichthyology during the nineteenth century. Steindachner, a contemporary, named several species after him.

Morphology

Brachychalcinus copei is a strongly laterally compressed, deep-bodied fish whose overall outline approaches a disc or circle in lateral view — the character that sets the genus apart from more elongate characids and gives rise to the vernacular name disc tetra. FishBase records a maximum total length of 3.5 in, making it a medium-sized characid by Amazonian standards.

The body is silvery, with a distinctive coloration pattern involving a first humeral blotch that the 2024 Garcia-Ayala revision describes as slightly darker than in congeners — the so-called 'copei pattern' used as a diagnostic character. As in all Brachychalcinus species, the genus-defining triangular predorsal and preanal spines are present. Fin configuration is typical for the family. Sexual dimorphism is moderate; ripe females become noticeably deeper-bodied and rounder when carrying eggs, while males tend to be trimmer.

Habitat

Brachychalcinus copei occupies freshwater environments across a broad Cis-Andean range — the Solimões and Madeira river basins of the Amazon system as recorded by FishBase, with the wider distribution across the Amazon, Orinoco, and Paraguay basins confirmed by the 2024 revision. Countries on record include Bolivia, Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Guyana, and Suriname. The type locality, Tabatinga, sits on the upper Amazon near the Brazilian–Colombian–Peruvian triple border, at the edge of the lowland Amazonian floodplain zone.

FishBase characterises the species as benthopelagic — associated with lower and middle water layers rather than the surface — in freshwater environments. Reported water parameters from FishBase span 72–79 °F and pH 5.8–7.2, consistent with the soft, slightly acidic to neutral blackwater and whitewater river systems typical of the central and western Amazon basin. The wide distribution across multiple major South American drainages suggests the species tolerates some environmental variation across its range, though detailed habitat studies are sparse in the literature.

Feeding

Detailed dietary studies of Brachychalcinus copei in the wild are limited in the available literature. The genus as a whole occupies omnivore-leaning niches common among small Amazonian characids, and the benthopelagic lifestyle noted by FishBase suggests feeding activity in the mid- to lower water column, likely on small invertebrates, particulate organic matter, and plant material encountered there.

In the aquarium, congener care accounts suggest the genus is undemanding at feeding time and will accept good-quality flake and small pellets alongside frozen and live foods such as Daphnia, small bloodworm, and Artemia. A varied diet helps maintain condition and colour. Like most characids, B. copei will benefit from regular offerings of live or frozen prey alongside a staple prepared food.

Mating

No detailed field observations of mating behaviour in Brachychalcinus copei appear in the literature accessible at time of writing. Based on the general biology of similarly shaped small Amazonian characids and the aquarium experience with closely related congeners, the species is expected to follow the egg-scattering mode typical of the Stethaprioninae and of Characidae broadly: males court females with brief lateral displays, and spawning occurs in the water column or among fine-leaved vegetation, with eggs scattered and left unattended.

In species with similar body plans and habitats, mating activity is often triggered by gradual temperature increases and a slight drop in pH, mimicking the onset of the rainy season. The compressed, disc-shaped body of Brachychalcinus may allow tighter schooling during courtship, but this has not been specifically documented for the species.

Breeding

Captive breeding records for Brachychalcinus copei specifically are sparse. By analogy with the broader genus and with other small Amazonian characids, breeding in captivity would involve an egg-scattering spawning over fine-leaved plants or synthetic mops, with adhesive eggs deposited and left without parental care. Adults are likely to consume eggs if left in contact with them, making removal of the spawning medium or transfer of the adults the standard approach.

Conditioning with live and frozen foods, a slight lowering of pH, and a gradual temperature increase to the warmer end of the species' range (toward 79 °F) would represent a reasonable first approach based on what is known for similarly placed Amazonian characins. Fry would require infusoria or commercial liquid fry food initially before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp. As captive experience with this species in the hobby is limited, keepers willing to work with it will be in relatively novel territory.

In the aquarium

Brachychalcinus copei is rarely encountered in the ornamental fish trade and is primarily of interest to specialist keepers of Amazonian biotope aquaria or those drawn to the unusual disc-shaped body plan of the genus. When available, it is best housed in a group of six or more individuals — like most schooling characids it is more settled and displays better in numbers.

Care parameters from FishBase (72–79 °F, pH 5.8–7.2) place it firmly in the soft, slightly acidic to neutral Amazonian water profile familiar to anyone keeping other tetras or corydoras from the same region. The congener husbandry note from Seriously Fish suggests a tank base of at least 120 × 12 in with moderate water flow (around four to five times the tank volume per hour), which translates well to B. copei given its similar size and active swimming habit. A biotope setup with dark substrate, driftwood, leaf litter, and dim lighting will show the species at its best and is consistent with the blackwater and clearwater habitats it occupies in the wild. Tankmates should be peaceful and of comparable size — other small tetras, corydoras, and dwarf cichlids all make appropriate companions in an Amazonian community.

Conservation

Brachychalcinus copei is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment attributed to 2021 via FishBase. The species' wide distribution across multiple South American drainage systems — spanning the Amazon, Orinoco, and Paraguay basins in seven countries — underpins this status, providing a large and ecologically varied range with no evidence of significant population decline.

The 2024 generic revision confirmed B. copei as one of seven valid species in the genus, clarifying the taxonomic identity of a group that had accumulated some confusion in the literature. No specific conservation threats are flagged in the available sources. As an uncommon species in the ornamental trade, collection pressure is not a meaningful concern. Ongoing habitat conversion in parts of the Amazon and Orinoco basins represents the general threat facing most Neotropical fishes, but the breadth of the species' range provides considerable buffer.
