Brycinus brevis is a sizeable West and Central African characin reaching 10 in in total length, placing it among the larger members of its family. Native to a fragmented arc of river basins spanning southern Ghana, the Lagos area and Bénoué drainage of southern Nigeria, and the Sanaga River system of Cameroon, it occupies permanent rivers and streams across a coastal-forest belt that is under mounting pressure from oil development, urban expansion, and agricultural clearance. The IUCN assessed it as Endangered in 2020, noting it is known from only three locations and that the quality of its freshwater habitat is in continuing decline.

Taxonomy & naming

Brycinus brevis was originally described by George Albert Boulenger in 1903. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Catalog of Fishes, CAS) is the authority for the valid name, which carries a parenthetical authority because the species was placed in a different genus at description and subsequently transferred to Brycinus. The genus Brycinus belongs to the family Alestidae — the African tetras — a clade of characiforms restricted to the African continent, stretching from West Africa to the Rift Valley systems.

FishBase notes a close affinity between B. brevis and B. macrocephalus, another large-bodied West African alestid. The broad-headed, long-snouted body form is shared between these species. As is typical for Brycinus, the species is a silvery, torpedo-shaped fish that resembles the superficially similar characins of South America but belongs to an entirely independent African radiation within the order Characiformes.

Morphology

Brycinus brevis is a large alestid, reaching a maximum recorded total length of 10 in and a maximum weight of around 300 g. The head is notably broad with a long snout, the snout length reported as three times into the head length, giving the face a somewhat pike-like projection relative to many smaller tetras. The lateral line carries 21–23 scales, and the anal fin has 16–18 soft rays — meristic counts that assist in separating it from congeners.

The body form is elongate and laterally compressed in the manner of a fast-water swimmer, with a forked tail suited for sustained movement in current. Coloration in wild and aquarium specimens is silvery, often with a faint lateral stripe or iridescent sheen on the flanks; precise coloration data are sparse in the available literature. There is no published description of marked sexual dimorphism, though gravid females may be deeper-bodied as in related alestids.

Habitat

Brycinus brevis inhabits permanent rivers and streams across a disjunct range in West and Central Africa: the southern coastal rivers of Ghana, the Lagos area and Bénoué basin of southern Nigeria, and the Sanaga River basin of Cameroon. This distribution straddles the Gulf of Guinea coastal forest belt, a region of high biological diversity and substantial human impact.

By analogy with the broader Brycinus and Alestidae radiation, the species is expected to be an egg-scattering open-water or pelagic spawner with no parental care, releasing semi-buoyant or adhesive eggs over gravel or submerged vegetation during spawning migrations. Specific courtship behaviour has not been described in the literature available to date.

Breeding

Its adult size of 10 in TL would require a very large aquarium — a minimum of 78.5 in in length would be a reasonable guideline for a small group — with powerful filtration and robust tankmates capable of coexisting with a large, active predatory fish. Water chemistry of pH 6.8–7.8 and 73–81 °F is consistent with many standard tropical setups.

For the rare hobbyist who obtains this species, it should be treated as a large, fast schooling fish that needs open swimming space, a secure lid (alestids are strong jumpers), and a diet of meaty foods. Given its Endangered status, any wild-caught individuals would represent specimens from stressed wild populations, and captive breeding attempts — if feasible — would be of genuine conservation interest. Data on its long-term captive maintenance are sparse.

Conservation

Brycinus brevis is assessed as Endangered (EN) under criterion B2ab(iii) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment published in 2020 based on a 2019 evaluation by Olaosebikan, B.D. and Lalèyè, P. The listing reflects a restricted area of occupancy (20–311 mi² estimated) across only three known locations, combined with continuing decline in habitat quality. The previous assessment had listed the species as Vulnerable (VU) in 2010, indicating a worsening trajectory.

The primary threats identified by the IUCN are oil exploration and urban and industrial development in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria, alongside logging, mining, and agricultural expansion in Ghana — pressures that degrade the permanent rivers and streams the species depends on. No protected areas are noted as covering the species' range. Given the small number of known locations and the scale of habitat degradation in the Gulf of Guinea coastal forest zone, the species is at meaningful extinction risk without targeted protection of its remaining river habitat.
