Brycinus leuciscus was originally described by Albert Günther in 1867. The parenthetical authority reflects the fact that Günther placed the species in a different genus at description; it was subsequently moved to Brycinus, a genus of alestid characiforms distributed across sub-Saharan Africa. The family Alestidae — the African tetras — is the Old World counterpart of the South American characid radiation.
