Brycinus luteus was originally described by Roman in 1966 and is listed in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes under the genus Brycinus, family Alestidae. The parenthetical authority indicates that the species was originally placed in a different genus before being transferred to its current position. Brycinus is a large genus of African characiforms broadly distributed across sub-Saharan rivers and lakes; B. luteus belongs to the West African component of this radiation.
Alestidae is the family of African tetras, sometimes called 'characins' by aquarists following older classifications; they are the Old World counterpart to the Characidae of South America. Within the family, Brycinus species tend to be slender, fast-swimming, pelagic fish of open water and main river channels rather than dense-vegetation microhabitats.
