Brycinus poptae is a torpedo-shaped African tetra distributed across the middle Congo River basin, including tributaries in Cameroon, the Republic of Congo, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. A silvery, fast-moving schooling fish marked by a distinctive dark blotch on the lateral flank and warm orange tints in the caudal fin, it was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Pellegrin in 1906 and named in honour of the Dutch zoologist Canna Maria Louise Popta. Assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN, it is an adaptable omnivore inhabiting forest-shaded, tannin-rich rivers and is occasionally encountered in the aquarium hobby.

Taxonomy & naming

Brycinus poptae was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Pellegrin in 1906. The parenthetical authority notation reflects the fact that the species was originally placed in a different genus and subsequently moved into Brycinus. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the governing authority for the valid name. The genus Brycinus belongs to the family Alestidae — the African tetras — a radiation of characiform fishes confined to sub-Saharan Africa and the Nile basin.

The specific epithet poptae honours Dr Canna Maria Louise Popta (1860–1929), a Dutch ichthyologist who made important contributions to the study of freshwater fishes from Indonesia and Africa. The genus name Brycinus derives from the Greek roots ebrykon or brykomai, meaning to bite or gnaw, an allusion to the dentition that characterises the genus and its relatives within the family.

Morphology

Brycinus poptae is a moderately large African tetra, reaching a maximum recorded length of 8 in standard length according to FishBase, though aquarium trade sources often cite specimens closer to 6.5 in. The body is elongated and torpedo-shaped, built for sustained swimming, with large eyes suited to the forest-shaded, tannin-stained rivers the species inhabits.

The colouration is primarily silvery, with a prominent dark bluish-black blotch positioned on the lateral region of the body. The caudal fin carries splashes of orangy-brown, providing a warm accent to an otherwise understated colour scheme. White shading accompanies the dark lateral blotch, creating contrast. The overall appearance is elegant rather than gaudy — a pattern typical of open-water, schooling alestids that rely on group cohesion rather than cryptic blending.

Habitat

Brycinus poptae is distributed across the middle Congo River basin, with confirmed records from Cameroon, the Republic of Congo, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Tributaries where it has been recorded include the Kwilu, Ruki, Léfini, Alima, Sangha, Uele, Itimbiri, Aruwimi, and Lindi-Tshopo river systems — a broad swath of the central Congo drainage.

The species inhabits freshwater rivers and streams that drain equatorial forest, where decaying vegetation releases tannins and organic acids into the water, producing the soft, slightly acidic to circumneutral conditions typical of the Congo basin. Natural habitat descriptions include fast-flowing waters beneath a dense forest canopy. FishBase classifies the species as pelagic in habit, consistent with an open-water schooling lifestyle in the mid-water column of larger rivers and their tributaries.

Feeding

Brycinus poptae is an omnivore with a carnivorous tendency, reflected in a trophic level of 2.9 ± 0.4 recorded on FishBase. In the wild the diet is presumed to include small invertebrates, insects, crustaceans, and other animal material, supplemented by plant matter and organic detritus.

In the aquarium it accepts live and frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and chopped earthworms, as well as premium prepared foods based on protein-rich ingredients including prawns. A diet weighted toward animal protein suits its carnivorous leanings and supports good condition and colouration. As with other mid-to-upper water column alestids, offering variety — combining prepared foods with regular live or frozen items — produces better results than a monotonous diet.

Mating

Brycinus poptae is an egg-scattering, open-water spawner. No parental care has been reported, which is the norm for the family Alestidae. Schooling behaviour is fundamental to the species' social structure, and a healthy group provides the competitive male dynamics and social cues that typically stimulate spawning in alestid tetras.

Egg release is presumed to occur among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or over open substrate, as is characteristic of the genus. Conditioning on live and high-protein frozen foods brings adults into reproductive readiness. Specific mating courtship details for this species are not well documented in the available literature, but the broad pattern of African tetras — active male competition, open spawning without pair bonding, and immediate abandonment of eggs — applies here.

Breeding

In captivity, Brycinus poptae reproduces as an egg-scatterer with no parental care. Spawning typically yields several hundred eggs, which the adults will eat if not removed. Providing clumps of fine-leaved plants or synthetic spawning mops gives eggs somewhere to settle and offers some protection during the spawn.

At typical tropical temperatures, eggs hatch within four to six days. Fry become free-swimming roughly one to two days after hatching and require very fine first foods such as infusoria or commercial liquid fry food. By approximately three days post-hatch, baby brine shrimp and microworms can be introduced. Growth is gradual. The species has a documented average lifespan of up to five years in captivity when well maintained.

In the aquarium

Brycinus poptae is a peaceful, schooling species best kept in groups of six or more. Larger schools produce more natural behaviour and better overall condition. Given its potential size of up to around 6.5–8 in, a spacious aquarium with a generous swimming lane is recommended; an adult group needs ample horizontal space. The species occupies the middle to upper water column.

Water chemistry should reflect its Congo basin origins: a pH of 6.0 to 8.0 is tolerated, with softer, slightly acidic to neutral water closer to wild conditions. Temperature of 70–81 °F suits the species well. A tank with some tannin staining from driftwood or dried leaves, along with robust filtration and a good current, provides an appropriate environment. Tankmates should be similarly sized and peaceful; this is not a fish for small, delicate species. Diet should include live and frozen protein-rich foods regularly to maintain condition.

Conservation

Brycinus poptae is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, evaluated on 16 February 2009 by assessor T. Moelants. The broad distribution across multiple tributaries of the middle Congo River basin provides resilience against localised threats; the species is not confined to a single drainage or isolated water body.

FishBase records a high resilience index for the species, with population doubling time estimated at fewer than 15 months under favourable conditions — a biological buffer against exploitation. Fishing vulnerability is assessed as low (14 out of 100). No acute conservation concerns are flagged for the species at present, though it shares its range with the broader pressures facing the Congo basin ecosystem, including deforestation, artisanal fishing, and land-use change.
