Brycinus schoutedeni is a large African characid reaching 8.5 in in total length, native to the coastal river systems of west-central Africa — southern Cameroon, Gabon, the Republic of Congo, and the Chiloango River basin in the Democratic Republic of Congo. A member of the family Alestidae and one of roughly nine valid species in the genus Brycinus, it was originally described from the Mayumbe district of the DRC by George Albert Boulenger in 1912 and has since been confirmed as a distinct species by modern phylogenomic analysis. It remains unevaluated on the IUCN Red List.

Taxonomy & naming

Brycinus schoutedeni was originally described as Alestes schoutedeni by George Albert Boulenger in 1912, based on type specimens collected at Kuka-Muno in the Mayumbe region of what was then the Belgian Congo (now the Democratic Republic of Congo). Type specimens are deposited at the Natural History Museum, London (BMNH) and the Royal Museum for Central Africa in Tervuren, Belgium (MRAC). The species was subsequently transferred to the genus Brycinus, placing the original authority in parentheses as (Boulenger, 1912); the synonym Alestes schoutedeni Boulenger 1912 is recorded in the CLOFFA catalogue of African freshwater fishes.

A 2023 phylogenomic and morphological revision of the genus Brycinus by Stiassny and colleagues — which revalidated Brachyalestes and described a new species from the Congo Basin — confirmed B. schoutedeni as a valid species among approximately nine recognised Brycinus. The genus Brycinus belongs to the family Alestidae, the African tetras, a clade of characiform fishes endemic to sub-Saharan Africa. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for the current valid name Brycinus schoutedeni (Boulenger, 1912).

The specific epithet schoutedeni honours Henri Schouteden (1881–1972), the Belgian zoologist who served as director of the Royal Museum for Central Africa and made substantial contributions to the taxonomy of central African vertebrates.

Morphology

Brycinus schoutedeni is among the larger members of its genus, reaching a maximum recorded total length of 8.5 in (approximately 8.7 in). Like other alestids it has the compressed, moderately deep body typical of the African tetra group, with large cycloid scales — the 'Großschuppen-Brycinus' (large-scale Brycinus) of the German common name reflects this character — and the characteristic adipose fin of characiforms. The trophic level recorded by FishBase (2.9) suggests a diet leaning toward zooplankton and small invertebrates rather than piscivory.

Detailed morphological descriptions of fresh or live specimens in the scientific literature remain sparse in widely accessible sources, and precise colour-in-life data are not well documented in the available cache. Habitat

As an active, pelagic schooling fish it should be kept in a group of at least five or six rather than singly or in pairs, and tankmates should be robust enough not to be harassed or outcompeted. Conservation
