Taxonomy & naming
Loricariichthys cashibo was described by Carl H. Eigenmann and W.R. Allen in 1942, based on a single specimen — the holotype — collected at Lago Cashiboya, an oxbow lake on the Río Ucayali, Loreto Region, Peru. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the valid combination Loricariichthys cashibo. That holotype was subsequently lost, and no illustration of the type specimen is known to exist, making the original description the sole primary record for the species.
The genus Loricariichthys belongs to subfamily Loricariinae — the whiptail clade of Loricariidae — and is most readily distinguished from its close relatives by the male's remarkable reproductive behaviour: males carry fertilised eggs attached to or cupped between their enlarged, swollen lower lips through incubation, a form of paternal mouthbrooding unique within the family.
The specific epithet cashibo honours the Cashibo people (today more commonly known as the Cacataibo), an indigenous Amazonian nation of the Ucayali region of Peru. The type locality Lago Cashiboya was itself named after this group. The genus name Loricariichthys derives from Latin lorica (cuirass, coat of mail) and Greek ichthys (fish) — 'armoured fish', in reference to the bony scute-armour of loricariids.
Morphology
The original description records a maximum length of approximately 5 in TL (total length). This places L. cashibo among the smaller members of its genus — Loricariichthys microdon reaches approximately 5 in TL, while L. acutus reaches 7.5 in and L. labialis around 10 in, providing useful context for the size estimate.
Beyond these size data and the general loricariid body plan — strongly depressed and elongated, covered in longitudinal rows of keeled bony scutes, with a ventrally positioned scraping mouth — no detailed morphological description of L. cashibo can be provided here given the loss of the holotype. The distinctive lower-lip hypertrophy in breeding males, characteristic of all Loricariichthys, may be assumed on generic grounds but has not been confirmed in this species from post-description material.
Data on coloration, scute count, odontode development, and other diagnostic characters are sparse or absent from sources available at the time of writing.
Habitat
The sole confirmed locality for Loricariichthys cashibo is Lago Cashiboya (approximately 7.62°S, 74.93°W), an oxbow lake on the Río Ucayali, Loreto Region, Peru. Oxbow lakes in the Ucayali system are shallow, warm, and often hypoxic during the dry season, with soft, muddy substrates, abundant macrophyte growth, and substantial accumulations of decomposing leaf and wood debris.
Water parameters at Lago Cashiboya have not been documented in the sources available. Given the Ucayali lowland context, warm conditions (approximately 79–86 °F), soft to slightly acidic water (pH roughly 6.0–7.0), and low conductivity are probable, but these remain inferences from regional ecology rather than direct measurements for this locality.
Whether the species occurs in the main Ucayali channel or adjacent water bodies is unknown; no specimen has been recorded from any other locality.
Feeding
No feeding data specific to Loricariichthys cashibo exist in the literature. Inference from genus-level biology suggests a benthic detritivore and biofilm scraper diet typical of Loricariinae: the ventrally placed scraping mouth is well adapted for rasping fine organic material, periphyton, and algae from soft substrates, driftwood surfaces, and submerged macrophyte stems.
Loricariichthys species in the aquarium are reported to accept sinking algae wafers, spirulina-based pellets, blanched vegetables, and small amounts of invertebrate-based protein food. These genus-level observations are the best available proxy for dietary needs.
Mating
Nothing is known of courtship behaviour specific to Loricariichthys cashibo. In the genus Loricariichthys more broadly, breeding males develop prominently enlarged and fleshy lower lips that serve as the egg-brooding surface during parental care. The elaboration of lip tissue is presumably subject to sexual selection, with females assessing male condition through the development of this structure.
In better-studied Loricariichthys species, the male establishes a territory and courts the female at or near the substrate before spawning. Whether L. cashibo follows this pattern can only be assumed by analogy.
Breeding
The most distinctive feature of the genus Loricariichthys — including, by inference, L. cashibo — is paternal lip-brooding. After spawning, the male attaches and carries fertilised eggs against or between his hypertrophied lower lips through the incubation period, continuing to fan and aerate them until hatching. This mode of parental care is unique within Loricariidae and contrasts with the tube- or cave-guarding strategies common to most other whiptail genera.
No specific data on clutch size, incubation duration, or fry development are available for L. cashibo. The species has not been reported from the ornamental fish trade and is not known to have been maintained in captivity.
In the aquarium
Loricariichthys cashibo is not established in the ornamental fish hobby and has not been reported in the aquarium trade as a recognised species. The sole specimen used in the original description was lost, and no subsequent collections have been published, so no captive husbandry experience exists for this taxon.
General Loricariichthys care requirements — inferred from congeners — include a spacious aquarium of at least 39.5 in length, fine sandy or silty substrate, gentle to moderate filtration, and ample shelter among driftwood and leaf litter. Water conditions consistent with the Ucayali lowlands (warm, soft, slightly acidic) would likely be appropriate.
Any aquarist who believes they have collected or obtained this species should document it carefully and contact a specialist in Loricariidae systematics, as a confirmed specimen would substantially advance the scientific record.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Loricariichthys cashibo as Data Deficient (DD) in April 2014. This designation reflects the near-total absence of information about the species: it is known from a single, subsequently lost holotype collected at one locality in the 1940s, with no confirmed records since. Whether the species persists, has been overlooked in surveys, or represents a genuinely narrow endemic under pressure is entirely unknown.
The Ucayali basin faces ongoing habitat modification from deforestation, artisanal gold mining, oil extraction, and agricultural encroachment. Oxbow lakes such as Lago Cashiboya are particularly vulnerable to isolation and water-quality deterioration as surrounding forest is cleared. Without modern specimens, any assessment of L. cashibo's actual conservation status is impossible. Targeted surveys of Lago Cashiboya and adjacent Ucayali oxbows would be a valuable first step.
