Bryconalestes bartoni is a small, rarely kept African tetra of the family Alestidae, native to the Ngounié River drainage — a tributary of the Ogowe system in Gabon — and the Kouilou-Niari basin in the Republic of Congo. Original specimens were described by Nichols and La Monte in 1953 under the name Alestes bartoni, later transferred to the resurrected genus Bryconalestes. The species is assessed as Endangered by the IUCN, a status that reflects its narrow endemic range and the pressures typical of west-central African river systems in the late twentieth century.

Taxonomy & naming

Bryconalestes bartoni was described by Nichols and La Monte in 1953, originally placed in the genus Alestes as Alestes bartoni. Subsequent revisions of the African characiform family Alestidae transferred the species to Bryconalestes, a genus now recognised within the subfamily Alestinae for a cluster of small, elongate west-central African tetras that share certain morphological characters separating them from the more broadly defined Alestes. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Bryconalestes bartoni (Nichols & La Monte, 1953), with the parenthetical authority reflecting the genus transfer. An annotated checklist of Gabonese fishes (Paugy and colleagues, early 2000s) records the species with the synonym Alestes bartoni Nichols & La Monte, 1953.

The genus Bryconalestes is distributed across West and Central Africa, occupying freshwater rivers and streams. B. bartoni is the representative of the genus recorded from the Ogowe–Ngounié drainage of Gabon and the Kouilou-Niari system of the Republic of Congo. The family Alestidae has historically been placed within the order Characiformes alongside the New World characins; within the family the Alestinae comprises many of the smaller, schooling species familiar from the African tetra trade.

Morphology

FishBase records the maximum standard length of Bryconalestes bartoni as 3.5 in SL for males or unsexed specimens and 3 in SL for females, making it a moderately sized alestid comparable in scale to its better-known relatives. Like other Bryconalestes, it is a slender, laterally compressed fish with the characteristic alestid body form: a somewhat fusiform shape suited to mid-water schooling in flowing river environments, a forked tail, and a relatively small head.

Detailed meristic and colouration data for this species are sparse in the accessible literature, which reflects the difficulty of collecting and studying rarely encountered, range-restricted African endemics. The Alestidae more broadly show subtle silvery to yellowish body tones with reflective flanks and, in many species, a dark lateral stripe or spot at the caudal peduncle — a pattern that may apply here but cannot be stated with confidence from the available sources.

Habitat

Bryconalestes bartoni is a freshwater fish recorded from two river systems in west-central Africa: the Ngounié River, a major tributary of the Ogowe (Ogooué) in Gabon, and the Kouilou-Niari basin in the Republic of Congo. These systems drain through lowland and sub-montane tropical forest on the Bateke Plateau and surrounding terrain, with typically dark, warm, soft, and acidic water characteristic of Congolian forest rivers, though local variation is considerable.

FishBase characterises the species as pelagic in freshwater, suggesting it occupies the open water column of rivers rather than benthic or heavily vegetated zones. No fine-grained habitat descriptions — substrate type, flow speed, canopy cover, water chemistry measurements — are recorded in the sources available for this species. Given its family affinities and the general ecology of alestid tetras, it likely schools in mid-water in moderately flowing river sections.

Feeding

Sexual dimorphism within the genus may include females becoming visibly deeper-bodied when gravid, and possible slight differences in finnage between sexes.

Until captive observations are published, detailed mating behaviour must be treated as inferred rather than confirmed for this species.

Breeding

There are no published accounts of Bryconalestes bartoni being bred in captivity. If the species follows the general alestid pattern, eggs would be adhesive or semi-adhesive, scattered among fine-leaved plants or in open water, and would hatch within a few days at tropical temperatures. Adults are expected to show no parental care and would likely consume eggs and fry given the opportunity.

Given the species' Endangered status, restricted range, and apparent rarity in the hobby, captive breeding records — should any exist in private collections — would be of significant conservation interest.

In the aquarium

Bryconalestes bartoni is effectively unknown in the aquarium hobby. No trade records, husbandry guides, or keeper accounts for the species appear in the accessible literature, and it is not listed among commercially available African tetras. Its small size — under 4 in SL — and likely schooling, open-water habits would in principle make it manageable in a spacious community aquarium with soft, warm, acidic to neutral water replicating its west-central African river origins.

Aquarists who encounter this species should treat it as a sensitive, poorly documented fish requiring stable, clean water conditions, a school of conspecifics, and a varied diet of live and frozen invertebrates. Given its conservation status, any specimens available should be verified as legally and sustainably sourced.

Conservation

Bryconalestes bartoni is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment date recorded by FishBase as 16 February 2009. The Endangered designation reflects the combination of a restricted endemic range — confined to the Ngounié–Ogowe drainage of Gabon and the Kouilou-Niari basin of the Republic of Congo — and the pressures affecting river systems in west-central Africa, including habitat degradation, water quality changes, and potential collection pressure.

The species was recorded as a Gabon endemic in early checklists, and its status in the Kouilou-Niari system represents either a natural range extension or historical under-surveying of that basin. Annotated checklists of Gabonese fishes document B. bartoni as part of the Ogowe watershed fauna. Because virtually no aquarium trade interest exists in the species, commercial collection is unlikely to be a primary driver of decline; habitat loss in the river catchment is the more plausible long-term threat.
