Bryconalestes tessmanni is a mid-sized African tetra of the family Alestidae, native to freshwater systems of southern Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea. A pelagic, open-water swimmer reaching nearly 5 in in length, it belongs to a genus of robust, silver-bodied characoids that share the Congo and Gulf of Guinea river basins with their more celebrated relatives. The species is named in honour of the German ethnobotanist and explorer Günter Theodor Tessmann, who collected in the region in the early twentieth century; it has not been formally assessed by the IUCN.

Taxonomy & naming

Bryconalestes tessmanni was first described by Pappenheim in 1911 from material collected in what is now southern Cameroon or Equatorial Guinea. The specific authority is written in parentheses — (Pappenheim, 1911) — because the species was originally placed in a different genus before its transfer to Bryconalestes.

The genus Bryconalestes belongs to the family Alestidae, the African tetras, a group endemic to sub-Saharan Africa that has sometimes been placed within a broadly defined Characidae but is now treated as its own family under most contemporary classifications. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) is the governing authority for the valid name, and confirms the generic placement validated by Paugy's 1986 systematic revision of the Alestes and Brycinus complex — the primary taxonomic reference for this group recorded in FishBase. That revision placed tessmanni within Bryconalestes, which groups the larger, more robust species of the old Alestes complex from West and Central Africa.

The specific epithet tessmanni is a Latin genitive patronym honouring Dr Günter Theodor Tessmann (1884–1969), a German explorer, ethnologist, and plant collector who worked extensively in equatorial West Africa and whose biological collections contributed to the description of several new taxa.

Morphology

FishBase records a maximum total length of 5 in for Bryconalestes tessmanni, placing it among the larger members of its genus. Like other bryconalestine tetras it is a streamlined, laterally compressed fish with a silvery body, forked tail, and the elongated profile typical of active open-water swimmers. Detailed published morphological data for this species are sparse in accessible literature. The genus Bryconalestes in general is characterised by a relatively deep body compared with the slender Brycinus lineage, a well-developed lateral line, and the adipose fin present throughout the family Alestidae. Bryconalestes tessmanni is not a species encountered in mainstream aquarium commerce, and detailed husbandry records are absent from available hobby sources. Its size — approaching 5 in — and pelagic, active swimming habit suggest that, if kept, it would require a spacious aquarium with ample open swimming room, good filtration, and a secure lid, as active alestid tetras are prone to jumping.

By analogy with other mid-sized African tetras of the family Alestidae, a school of at least six individuals would be appropriate for social stability. Water conditions consistent with soft, slightly acidic to neutral tropical freshwater — temperatures in the 75–81 °F range, pH around 6.5–7.2 — would be a reasonable starting point. The omnivorous feeding habit means it would likely accept a varied diet of quality prepared foods supplemented with live or frozen invertebrates.
