Taxonomy & naming
Bryconalestes intermedius was originally described by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1903 under the name Alestes intermedius, the basionym from which the current combination is derived. The species was later transferred to the genus Bryconalestes following a revision of West African alestids by Paugy in 1990, published in the Faune des poissons d'eaux douces et saumâtres de l'Afrique de l'Ouest — the foundational modern treatment of the group. The current valid name, Bryconalestes intermedius (Boulenger, 1903), is confirmed by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong).
The family Alestidae — sometimes called African tetras or alestids — contains more than 120 species distributed across sub-Saharan Africa. Bryconalestes is a West and Central African genus of medium-sized alestids, closely allied to the more familiar Brycinus and distinguishable from Alestes by a combination of scale and fin-ray characters. Among the meristic features noted for B. intermedius are 31–35 lateral-line scales, anal soft-ray counts of 22–24, and the presence of a narrow fronto-parietal fontanel in adults; there is no humeral spot, which separates it from some congeners and confamilials.
Morphology
Bryconalestes intermedius is a slender, laterally compressed characin with a maximum recorded standard length of 3 in. The body form is typical of the alestid subfamily — a fusiform, somewhat elongate profile with a forked caudal fin, a single dorsal fin placed roughly mid-body, and an adipose fin behind it. Lateral-line scale counts of 31–35 are moderately low for the genus and assist in separating this species from larger or more scale-dense relatives.
Coloration in life is not well documented in the hobby literature; in common with many West African alestids the fish is likely silvery to pale gold along the flanks, possibly with a darker lateral stripe or faint midlateral sheen, and clearer to slightly pigmented fins. The absence of a humeral spot — the dark blotch behind the operculum present in many alestid genera — is a useful distinguishing mark. Sexual dimorphism has not been described in detail in the accessible literature; as with related species, females may be deeper-bodied when ripe.
Habitat
The species is distributed across river systems spanning the border region of Cameroon and adjacent Gabon: the upper Cross River drainage, the Kribi River (which enters the Atlantic near Kribi in southern Cameroon), the Ogowe (Ogooué) basin — the principal river of Gabon — and the Nyanga River in southwestern Gabon. This range spans humid lowland and submontane forest drainages within the Congo–West African transition zone.
FishBase records the species as a freshwater, pelagic fish of tropical waters. Reported environmental parameters are 72–82 °F, pH 6.5–7.5, and general hardness up to 20 dH, consistent with the warm, mildly acidic-to-neutral rivers of the equatorial forest zone. The species is noted as sympatric with Nannopetersius ansorgii in Lake Tchibamba in the Loeme River system of the Republic of Congo, indicating it also occurs in lentic habitats within its range.
Feeding
FishBase assigns Bryconalestes intermedius a trophic level of 3.1, placing it as a low-level omnivore with a lean toward insectivory — consistent with the feeding ecology of most small-to-medium alestids, which exploit a mix of terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates, surface-fallen insects, and opportunistic plant material.
No detailed stomach-content studies specific to this species have been reported in the accessible hobby or scientific literature. By analogy with congeners such as Bryconalestes longipinnis (the longfin tetra) and with small alestids generally, the natural diet likely includes larval and adult aquatic insects, small crustaceans, zooplankton, and some vegetable matter. In captivity, species of this type typically accept a broad diet of small pellets, quality flake, and supplementary live or frozen invertebrates.
Mating
Bryconalestes intermedius belongs to a family in which egg-scattering open-water or plant-associated spawning is the norm, with no parental care. No specific observations of courtship behaviour in this species have been recorded in the hobby literature, which notes that breeding biology is unstudied.
By comparison with well-documented alestids, courtship is likely brief and non-elaborate: males chase ripe females through open water or vegetation, with spawning involving the synchronised release of eggs and milt into the water column or over submerged fine-leaved plants. Adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs may settle into plant cover, where they are left entirely unattended. Sexual readiness in the female is typically signalled by a noticeably distended abdomen.
Breeding
No captive breeding records for Bryconalestes intermedius appear in the available hobby literature, and the species is rare enough in aquariums that the detailed breeding parameters remain undocumented. Given the egg-scattering reproductive strategy characteristic of Alestidae, the general approach for related small West African tetras would apply: a separate breeding tank with soft, slightly acidic to neutral water at the warm end of the species' tolerance (around 79–82 °F), fine-leaved plants or synthetic spawning mops as spawning substrate, and removal of the adults after spawning to prevent egg predation.
Fertilized eggs of alestids typically hatch within 24–72 hours at tropical temperatures, and free-swimming fry require very fine first foods — infusoria, rotifers, or commercial liquid fry foods — before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. These details are extrapolated from the family; direct data for this species remain sparse.
In the aquarium
Bryconalestes intermedius is rarely encountered in the ornamental fish trade and has no widely used common name in English, making it almost exclusively of interest to specialists in African characins or biotope aquarists focused on Cameroon or Gabon river systems. No dedicated care profiles appear in the major English-language hobby databases.
Based on its ecological parameters — a pelagic, open-water species of moderate-sized West African rivers at 72–82 °F and pH 6.5–7.5 — a biotope or species aquarium of at least 31.5–39.5 in in length with open swimming space, soft substrate, and some driftwood or root structure would suit the species. Tankmates, if chosen, should be peaceful fish of comparable size from the same general biogeographic zone. The species' high natural resilience (minimum population doubling time under 15 months) suggests reasonable adaptability, but aquarium husbandry data remain essentially absent from the literature.
Conservation
Bryconalestes intermedius was assessed by the IUCN in May 2019 and placed in the category of Least Concern. The assessment reflects the species' occurrence across multiple river systems in Cameroon and Gabon — a range broad enough to buffer against localised declines — and a high population resilience, with a minimum doubling time estimated at less than 15 months. The species is not listed on CITES appendices.
No specific threats have been identified in the IUCN assessment or in the broader literature. The river basins it inhabits — the Kribi, upper Cross, Ogowe, and Nyanga drainages — remain largely forested, though logging pressure and agricultural conversion are ongoing concerns across Cameroon and Gabon. Given the species' scarcity in the trade and the absence of significant commercial collection, aquarium demand does not appear to represent a pressure. Continued monitoring of the Ogowe basin, the largest river system in its range, would be the most useful conservation action for this and the many other small alestids that share it.
