Taxonomy & naming
Bryconalestes tholloni was originally described by Jacques Pellegrin in 1901, with the type locality in the Ogoué (Ogowe) River, Gabon. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) records the valid name as Bryconalestes tholloni (Pellegrin, 1901); the parenthetical authority reflects the species' original placement in a different genus before its transfer to Bryconalestes. FishBase listed the species under the synonym Brycinus tholloni for some time, but the Catalog of Fishes treats Bryconalestes as the valid genus.
Bryconalestes is a genus within the family Alestidae — the African characins — a group that encompasses the popular Congo tetras (Phenacogrammus) and the large tigerfish (Hydrocynus) alongside dozens of smaller schooling species. Within Alestidae, Bryconalestes is a relatively small genus of riverine characins distributed across central and west-central Africa. Bryconalestes tholloni is a Lower Guinea endemic, meaning it is restricted to coastal-slope drainages lying between the Sanaga basin in the north and the lower Congo in the south.
Morphology
Bryconalestes tholloni is a moderately elongate, laterally compressed characin. FishBase records a maximum standard length of 3.5 in SL; specimens from the Mafoubou River studied by Dirat et al. (2024) ranged from 2.5–4.5 in SL, consistent with that figure. Like most alestids it has the typical characin body plan: a single dorsal fin, an adipose fin, a forked tail, and the strongly reflective scales common to open-water schooling fishes.
Detailed external morphology beyond size is sparsely documented in the primary literature available at time of writing. The species is described as uncommon within its range, and published photographs are scarce; aquarists and collectors encountering it in Gabonese or Congolese rivers would recognise the alestid gestalt — silvery flanks, a well-defined lateral line, and a streamlined profile suited to flowing water — but distinguishing characters from sympatric congeners require careful meristic examination.
Habitat
The species is confined to three river basins in Lower Guinea: the upper Ogowe (Ogoué) and Nyanga in Gabon, and the Kouilou in the Republic of Congo. These rivers drain the Atlantic-slope forests of western equatorial Africa, typically running through lowland and submontane rainforest over sandy or rocky substrates. The Mafoubou River, a tributary system from which Dirat et al. (2024) collected specimens, is representative of this environment.
Within these drainages Bryconalestes tholloni is characterised as an uncommon species. The rivers it inhabits are generally clear, moderately fast-flowing, and warm, with chemistry reflecting equatorial forest catchments: soft, mildly acidic to near-neutral water. Exact physicochemical data for its specific microhabitats are not reported in the literature reviewed here, but the broader Lower Guinea ichthyofaunal zone is dominated by rain-fed, humus-tinted rivers with low conductivity.
Feeding
The trophic biology of Bryconalestes tholloni was described in detail for the first time by Dirat et al. (2024), based on gut-content analysis of specimens from the Mafoubou River. The study found the species to be strongly insectivorous: insects made up 95.54% of prey items by index of relative importance, with Hymenoptera (ants, bees, and wasps) accounting for 32.27% and Coleoptera (beetles) for 13.26%. This places it among the most specialised insect predators within the alestids, feeding primarily on terrestrial and semi-terrestrial insects that fall onto or are associated with the water surface.
A size-related dietary shift was detected: larger individuals supplemented the insect diet with fruit, indicating facultative frugivory in adults. This pattern — insects as the staple, fruit as a size-dependent supplement — mirrors what has been described in other large-bodied Alestidae in forest river systems, where allochthonous (externally-derived) inputs from the riparian canopy are a major food source. The species appears to be a surface and upper water-column feeder, exploiting the zone where terrestrial invertebrates enter the aquatic environment.
Mating
No specific field data on the mating behaviour of Bryconalestes tholloni have been published in the sources available. Based on the reproductive biology of alestids generally, the species is expected to be an egg-scattering open spawner without parental care, as is typical across the family. Males and females likely aggregate in schools and broadcast adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs over submerged vegetation or into the water column during seasonal high-water periods, when rising river levels and increased food availability trigger spawning in many African river characins.
Sexual dimorphism, if present, has not been described in available sources. Ripe females in closely related alestids are generally deeper-bodied and more rotund than males when in breeding condition, but this has not been confirmed for B. tholloni specifically. The mating system and any courtship behaviours remain undocumented at time of writing.
Breeding
Bryconalestes tholloni has not been reported in the ornamental fish trade in any significant quantity and does not appear in published hobbyist breeding accounts. As with mating, what can be said is inferred from the alestid template: egg-scattering spawner, adhesive eggs deposited among fine-leaved aquatic plants or in open water, no parental care, and adults that will readily consume their own eggs if not separated from the spawning medium.
In the wild, breeding is probably linked to the wet season and the associated flooding of riparian areas, which increases food availability and provides shallow, vegetated spawning habitat — a pattern seen in many west African characins. Fry would be expected to be small at hatching and to require fine live foods initially. Given the species' rarity in captivity, no reliable data on incubation period, clutch size, or fry development exist in the literature reviewed here.
In the aquarium
Bryconalestes tholloni is essentially unknown in the ornamental fishkeeping hobby. It is not listed by major hobbyist databases as a traded species, and its endemic status in Gabon and the Republic of Congo means access is limited to specialist collectors working in those countries. Any aquarist encountering it should treat it as a rarity requiring careful documentation.
By analogy with other similarly sized alestids, a group of six or more would be most appropriate, kept in a spacious, well-filtered aquarium with soft, slightly acidic to neutral water and a temperature in the tropical range. The documented feeding ecology — principally terrestrial insects and surface prey — suggests that floating or surface-delivered live and frozen foods (crickets, flies, ants, floating insect preparations) would be appropriate complements to standard flake or pellet diets. Given the data gaps around this species, any hobbyist successfully keeping or breeding it would contribute genuinely useful natural-history information.
Conservation
Bryconalestes tholloni is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment conducted on 16 February 2009 (species ID 182072, assessment ID 7784472). The LC listing reflects that, at time of assessment, the species was not considered to face imminent threat despite its restricted Lower Guinea range across the Ogowe, Nyanga, and Kouilou basins of Gabon and the Republic of Congo.
The species is nonetheless described in the recent primary literature as uncommon within its range. The 2024 feeding study by Dirat et al. notes it is endemic to just these three basin systems and characterises it as infrequently encountered, which may indicate naturally low abundance rather than recent decline. The Gabonese and Congolese river systems it inhabits remain among the less heavily disturbed in equatorial Africa, as large portions of the Ogowe basin lie within forested areas with relatively low human population density. Continued monitoring is warranted given the restricted range and the fact that the existing assessment is now more than 15 years old.
