Bryconops giacopinii is a slender, silver-bodied characoid from the upper Orinoco drainage of Venezuela, known in the hobby by the evocative family nickname 'lizard bite tetra' — a literal translation of the family name Iguanodectidae, which refers to the genus's sharp dentition rather than any reptilian affinity. Confined to the Autana River basin, a tributary of the upper Orinoco, this benthopelagic species occupies the clear blackwater and whitewater streams of the Venezuelan Amazon and was described by Alberto Fernández-Yépez in 1950. It is assessed by the IUCN as Least Concern.

Taxonomy & naming

Bryconops giacopinii was described by the Venezuelan ichthyologist Alberto Fernández-Yépez in 1950 from material collected in the Autana River basin, part of the upper Orinoco drainage in what is now Amazonas state, Venezuela. The valid name is recorded in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes as Bryconops giacopinii (Fernández-Yépez, 1950); the parenthetical authority indicates the species was originally placed in a different genus before transfer to Bryconops.

The genus Bryconops is placed in the family Iguanodectidae — the lizard bite tetras — a small South American family whose members share a characteristically robust dentition more pronounced than in typical Characidae. Iguanodectidae has been subject to periodic revision as molecular and morphological analyses have clarified the relationships among characoid families, and Bryconops remains one of the larger and more species-rich genera in the family.

Morphology

Bryconops giacopinii is a fusiform, moderately compressed species reaching a reported maximum total length of 7 in, making it one of the larger members of its genus. Like other iguanodectids it has a streamlined body suited to open-water swimming in river channels and flooded forest margins, with a forked tail and a relatively large eye characteristic of fish active across a wide light range.

The coloration is silvery overall, typical of pelagic and benthopelagic characoids inhabiting turbid and clear Amazonian waters alike, with the lateral line and scale pattern providing the primary field marks. Feeding

Water parameters should reflect the upper Orinoco's soft, slightly acidic to neutral chemistry: low mineral content, pH in the range of roughly 6 to 7, and temperatures in the tropical range consistent with its origin. The species is likely best kept in a group of its own kind or alongside similarly sized, peaceful Orinoco inhabitants. Diet should include high-quality pellets and sticks supplemented with frozen foods. Given limited captive documentation, husbandry should be approached conservatively, drawing on experience with related large iguanodectids.

Conservation
