Hyphessobrycon hildae is a minute Venezuelan tetra barely reaching 0.5 in standard length, described in 1950 from the Autana River basin of the upper Orinoco drainage. It remains known almost entirely from the original description, its holotype resting in a museum collection while the species itself endures as one of South America's least-studied characids. The IUCN assessed it as Vulnerable in 2020, citing its extremely restricted known range and the absence of modern survey data.

Taxonomy & naming

Hyphessobrycon hildae was described by the Venezuelan ichthyologist Agustín Fernández-Yépez in 1950. The type locality is the Autana River basin, a tributary of the upper Orinoco in Venezuela. The species is placed in Hyphessobrycon, one of the largest and most ecologically diverse genera in the family Characidae, which currently spans several hundred species distributed across Central and South America.

The genus Hyphessobrycon has long been a taxonomic catch-all, and phylogenetic revisions continue to reorganise its membership; H. hildae has attracted little revisionary attention given how rarely it has been collected. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Catalog of Fishes, Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) is the authority for the valid name; the full citation is Hyphessobrycon hildae Fernández-Yépez, 1950. Because the species was described within Hyphessobrycon and remains there, no parenthetical authority is used.

Morphology

Hyphessobrycon hildae is an exceptionally small tetra, with a maximum recorded standard length of 0.5 in. This places it among the smallest representatives of an already small-bodied genus, comparable in scale to dwarf species such as H. amandae. Like other Hyphessobrycon, it is a small, laterally compressed, silvery characid bearing the characteristic adipose fin of the family.

Detailed morphological data remain sparse, as the species is known chiefly from the holotype and from references in subsequent literature that confirm only size and provenance. Published sources do not provide sufficient colour pattern descriptions or meristic data to characterise the live appearance in depth. Given the scarcity of material, any description beyond what the original account records is uncertain.

Habitat

The Autana River basin drains a remote, biodiverse region of the upper Orinoco drainage in the Venezuelan Amazon, dominated by tepui geology and Amazonian blackwater and clearwater systems. Tributaries in this region typically flow through lowland rainforest and gallery forest over sandy or rocky substrates, with naturally soft, acidic water characteristic of the Guiana Shield.

No dedicated habitat surveys of H. hildae have been published, and the species is known only from the original collection locality. FishBase classifies it as a freshwater benthopelagic tropical species, consistent with the general ecology of small Hyphessobrycon. The remoteness and limited accessibility of the Autana basin may partly explain why the species has not been recollected.

Feeding

No published dietary studies exist for Hyphessobrycon hildae. By analogy with other small Hyphessobrycon species, it is likely an opportunistic micropredator and omnivore, foraging on tiny invertebrates, microcrustaceans, algae, and organic detritus in the water column and at the substrate surface. This feeding guild is consistent with the benthopelagic classification recorded by FishBase.

Its minute size — under 1 in standard length — constrains prey size substantially, making it broadly comparable to other diminutive characids that specialise in zooplankton and small insect larvae.

Mating

No observations of courtship or mating behaviour in H. hildae have been reported in the scientific literature. As a member of the genus Hyphessobrycon, it almost certainly follows the egg-scattering reproductive strategy typical of the group: males and females broadcast adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or over the substrate, with no parental care following spawning.

Seasonal cues in the Orinoco drainage — particularly the flood cycle and associated changes in water temperature, conductivity, and photoperiod — likely trigger spawning in wild populations, as is the case for other characids in the basin.

Breeding

Captive breeding of H. hildae has not been documented in the hobby or scientific literature. The species is unknown in the aquarium trade, and only the original museum specimen underpins what is known of its biology. Given its size and taxonomic placement, breeding, if achieved, would likely resemble that of other dwarf Hyphessobrycon: eggs scattered over fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, hatching in a few days at tropical temperatures, with no parental care and adults prone to eating their own eggs.

The extreme rarity of specimens means no reliable incubation or developmental data can be offered. Hobbyists encountering the species — unlikely without specialist collection from the Autana basin — would need to work from first principles applied to the genus.

In the aquarium

Hyphessobrycon hildae is essentially absent from the aquarium hobby. No commercial collection from the Autana River basin for the ornamental trade has been recorded for this species, and it has not appeared in hobbyist literature. Its extremely small size, restricted range, and vulnerable conservation status all make it unsuitable as a trade species.

Were it to become available, care requirements by analogy with similar dwarf Hyphessobrycon would centre on soft, slightly acidic, well-filtered water at tropical temperatures (around 75–82 °F), a heavily planted tank with subdued lighting, and very fine foods appropriate to a fish of under 1 in. In practice, this species belongs to the growing category of tetras that exist in the hobby record only as a name.

Conservation

Hyphessobrycon hildae was assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List in October 2020 by Rodríguez-Olarte, Taphorn, Mojica, Usma, and Villa-Navarro. The assessment reflects the species' narrow known distribution — the Autana River basin in Venezuela — and the absence of records from any additional locality since the original 1950 description. Data deficiency is compounded by limited survey effort in a remote, difficult-to-access region.

The Autana basin lies within Venezuelan Amazonia, an area subject to increasing pressures from mining, deforestation, and land-use change. Although no targeted exploitation of this species is documented, habitat degradation across its limited range is the principal concern. Its IUCN listing ensures a degree of formal recognition, but conservation action is constrained by the near-total lack of ecological and population data.
