Galeocharax humeralis was originally described by Achille Valenciennes in 1834 under the name Hydrocyon humeralis. The species has since been moved to the genus Galeocharax, and because the original author's name is placed in parentheses, it reads as (Valenciennes, 1834) — the convention Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes uses for species transferred from their original genus. Galeocharax is a small Neotropical genus in the family Characidae, united by their robust, shark-like jaws and prominent teeth adapted for a piscivorous lifestyle; the genus name derives from the Greek galeos (shark or weasel shark) combined with charax, the ancient name for a pointed-stakes fish or a genus of sharp-toothed fishes.
Within Characidae, Galeocharax has at times been placed in the subfamily Stevardiinae or treated as part of a broader assemblage of predatory characins. Molecular phylogenies published in the 2010s and 2020s continue to refine the higher classification of Characidae, one of the largest vertebrate families, but the placement of G. humeralis as a valid species within Galeocharax is not disputed. The specific epithet humeralis refers to the shoulder region (Latin humerus, upper arm or shoulder), likely alluding to a mark or feature near the pectoral girdle in the original type specimen.
