Astyanax asuncionensis is a small, adaptable characid native to the Paraguay and lower Paraná River basins of South America. Described by the prolific Belgian-Brazilian ichthyologist Jacques Géry in 1972, it belongs to one of the largest and most species-rich genera in the family Characidae. Tolerant of degraded water conditions to a degree unusual even within the hardy Astyanax lineage, it has drawn the attention of ecologists studying fish community response to pollution. It has not been formally assessed by the IUCN.

Taxonomy & naming

Astyanax asuncionensis was described by Jacques Géry in 1972. The type locality is implied by the specific epithet — Asunción, the capital of Paraguay, situated on the Paraguay River — and the species is recorded from the Paraguay and lower Paraná River drainages. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes recognises the valid name as Astyanax asuncionensis Géry, 1972.

The genus Astyanax Baird & Girard, 1854 is one of the most speciose vertebrate genera, with well over 150 valid species spread across Central and South America; taxonomic work within it is ongoing and the limits of several species remain incompletely resolved. A. asuncionensis is assigned to the family Characidae, the largest family of freshwater fishes. FishBase notes that some sources have repositioned related taxa within Acestrorhamphidae, but the species itself is held in Characidae in the current reference literature.

Morphology

Astyanax asuncionensis reaches a maximum recorded standard length of 6 in, placing it at the larger end of the genus. Like other Astyanax, it has the classic characid body plan: moderately compressed, with a complete lateral line, a small adipose fin between the dorsal and caudal fins, and a terminal mouth equipped with small teeth. The anal fin carries 30–32 soft rays, a meristic count that helps distinguish it from close relatives within the genus.

The general coloration is silvery with the subtle patterning typical of the genus — often a diffuse dark caudal spot and faint mid-lateral stripe — though precise coloration data for this species are sparse in the available literature. Sexual dimorphism has not been described in detail for this species; in most Astyanax, females are deeper-bodied when ripe.

Habitat

This species inhabits the Paraguay and lower Paraná River basins of central South America, a vast lowland drainage system that spans Paraguay, Argentina, and adjacent parts of Brazil and Bolivia. It is classified as benthopelagic, occupying the water column near and above the bottom in tropical freshwaters. The Paraguay–Paraná system encompasses an enormous range of habitats, from the clear, fast channels of upland tributaries to the turbid, slow-moving floodplain rivers and oxbow lakes of the Chaco and Pantanal regions.

Field surveys along a Piedmont river system in Argentina recorded A. asuncionensis among the most pollution-tolerant species in the fish assemblage, present in river reaches characterised by low dissolved oxygen, high chemical oxygen demand, and generally degraded water quality. It co-occurs in these disturbed habitats with other tolerant species including Otocinclus vittatus and Corydoras paleatus. This ecological breadth — the ability to persist where sensitive species cannot — is a hallmark of the most widespread Astyanax and contributes to the genus's success across highly altered South American landscapes.

Feeding

FishBase records the trophic level of Astyanax asuncionensis as 2.9, consistent with the opportunistic omnivory characteristic of the genus. Astyanax species in general consume a broad diet including small aquatic invertebrates, terrestrial insects fallen to the water surface, plant material, algae, and organic detritus — the precise mix varying with habitat, season, and local prey availability.

In the aquarium, congeners are routinely accepted on standard flake and pellet foods, live and frozen invertebrates such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworm, and vegetable-based supplements. Specific feeding studies for A. asuncionensis are not documented in the available sources, but nothing in its ecology or morphology suggests it would differ from the broadly omnivorous norm of the genus.

Mating

No published courtship or mating observations specific to Astyanax asuncionensis are documented in the available literature. The reproductive biology of the genus as a whole is well characterised: Astyanax species are egg-scatterers that broadcast adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation, submerged roots, or over sandy substrates, without guarding or caring for eggs or fry. Males typically pursue ripe females, with spawning triggered by seasonal cues such as rising water temperature and the onset of the rainy season in the Paraguay and Paraná basins.

Sexual size dimorphism, with females becoming noticeably deeper-bodied when gravid, is the main visual difference between the sexes in most Astyanax and likely applies to this species as well.

Breeding

Breeding details specific to Astyanax asuncionensis have not been published in the accessible literature. By analogy with the genus, spawning is expected to follow the open egg-scattering pattern common to Characidae: eggs are released among fine-leaved plants or over substrate and receive no parental care; adults will readily consume eggs if not separated from the spawning site.

Congeneric species breed readily in captivity when conditioned on varied live and frozen foods and given water changes to simulate the onset of the rainy season. Incubation typically takes 24–48 hours at tropical temperatures, and fry require very small first foods — infusoria or commercially prepared liquid fry diets — before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. Because no captive-breeding records for this species are documented in the cache, aquarists should treat the above as genus-level inference rather than species-confirmed data.

In the aquarium

Astyanax asuncionensis is rarely encountered in the ornamental trade and is not a species typically kept by hobbyists; most aquarium Astyanax are the closely related A. mexicanus (the Mexican tetra, including the cave morph) or other abundant congeners. Should it become available, its ecological tolerance of poor water conditions and its characid body plan suggest it would be an undemanding aquarium resident, accepting a wide range of water parameters within a tropical range.

Based on genus-level norms and its recorded size of up to 6 in SL, it would be best kept in a spacious aquarium of 47 in or more with a school of conspecifics or similarly sized, peaceful tankmates. A well-filtered tank with open swimming space, some plant cover, and subdued lighting would suit it. Its tolerance of degraded conditions in the wild should not encourage poor husbandry; it will thrive best, and show best, in clean, well-maintained water with a varied diet.

Conservation

Astyanax asuncionensis has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; it carries a status of Not Evaluated. No conservation-specific studies targeting this species are documented in the available literature. Its documented tolerance of polluted and degraded river conditions — recorded among the most resilient species in impacted Argentine river reaches — suggests it is not acutely sensitive to the habitat degradation affecting large stretches of the Paraguay and Paraná basins.

However, the broader Paraguay–Paraná system faces ongoing pressures from agricultural expansion, industrial pollution, hydrological alteration, and invasive species, and even tolerant taxa can be affected by severe habitat loss over time. A formal IUCN assessment would provide clarity on the species' range, population trends, and any specific threats. Until such an assessment is conducted, the conservation status of A. asuncionensis remains undetermined.
