Taxonomy & naming
Hemigrammus gracilis was originally described as Tetragonopterus gracilis by the Danish naturalist Christian Frederik Lütken in 1875, based on material from Lagoa Santa in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil — a type locality that figures prominently in nineteenth-century natural history, as it was also the site of Peter Wilhelm Lund's pioneering palaeontological work. The type locality sits within the Rio São Francisco drainage, and the species' range extends into the Amazon basin as well. The valid name, following Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes as the governing authority, is Hemigrammus gracilis (Lütken, 1875), with the parenthetical authority reflecting the original placement in a different genus.
The species has been shuffled taxonomically over the decades — Jacques Géry placed it in Hyphessobrycon in his influential 1977 compendium — and FishBase notes its current classification within the broader Acestrorhamphidae grouping that reflects ongoing revision of characid higher taxonomy. Within this work, however, the family field follows the conventional "Characidae" designation stable in the broader literature. Hemigrammus is a large and heterogeneous genus of small neotropical tetras, and H. gracilis sits among species characterised by a caudal peduncle spot or stripe rather than any bold lateral band.
Morphology
Hemigrammus gracilis is a small, slender tetra reaching a maximum standard length of approximately 1.5 in, consistent with the genus's typical compact size range. The body is laterally compressed and moderately elongate, giving the fish the streamlined silhouette implied by its specific epithet — gracilis is Latin for slender or graceful. Ground colour is silvery to yellowish-silver, with the translucent flanks showing the internal organs and a faint iridescent sheen under good light.
Like most Hemigrammus species, it lacks the bold horizontal stripe or dramatic fin colouration of the most popular aquarium tetras. Markings are subtle: a darkish mid-lateral stripe or shadow may run along the posterior body, and a small dark blotch at the caudal peduncle is typical of the genus. The eye is relatively large. Sexual dimorphism is modest; females are generally deeper-bodied and plumper when in spawning condition, while males remain slimmer — a pattern typical across small characins.
Habitat
Hemigrammus gracilis is recorded from two major South American drainages: the Rio São Francisco basin, where its type locality of Lagoa Santa in Minas Gerais is situated, and parts of the Amazon basin. Lagoa Santa and the surrounding region are characterised by karstic limestone terrain, with shallow, warm lagoons and streams that can carry somewhat harder, higher-mineral water than the soft, black-water habitats associated with many Amazonian tetras. The species is described as benthopelagic and inhabits the freshwater zone exclusively.
Across its broader range it occupies lowland streams, lagoons, and flooded areas where aquatic vegetation and marginal cover are present. FishBase categorises it as subtropical, reflecting the latitude of the São Francisco system, where seasonal temperature variation is more pronounced than in the equatorial Amazon lowlands. The species' occurrence across two major basins suggests a degree of ecological flexibility, at least in terms of water chemistry tolerance.
Feeding
Like virtually all small Hemigrammus species, H. gracilis is an opportunistic omnivore that takes a mix of small invertebrates, zooplankton, and plant or detrital material in the wild. In the lagoons and streams of the São Francisco basin it would encounter small crustaceans, aquatic insect larvae, and organic particulates alongside algal growth on submerged surfaces.
In captivity it accepts standard small-tetra fare without difficulty: quality flake and micro-pellets provide a nutritional baseline, while frozen or live Daphnia, brine shrimp nauplii, and similar small invertebrates improve condition and trigger spawning readiness. The species poses no feeding challenges and will compete actively at mealtimes without being aggressive toward tankmates.
Mating
Hemigrammus gracilis follows the standard open-water egg-scattering reproductive strategy characteristic of the genus and indeed of most small characins. There is no pair bond and no parental care; males and females scatter adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic plants or over substrate, then ignore the spawn entirely. Males become noticeably slimmer than ripe females, and courtship consists of active chasing and parallel-swimming displays rather than elaborate territorial behaviour.
Spawning is most reliably triggered by a water change with slightly cooler, softer water, combined with good feeding on live or frozen foods in the days beforehand. In a well-planted community tank spawning may occur spontaneously, though the eggs are typically eaten before they hatch unless removed. Conditioning groups of several males and females together is the standard approach.
Breeding
Breeding follows the conventional small-tetra protocol. A separate, dimly lit breeding tank of 5.5–10 US gal, furnished with fine-leaved plants such as Java moss or synthetic spawning mops and with the water level kept shallow, provides the best conditions. Water should be soft to moderately soft, slightly acidic to neutral, and warm — around 75–82 °F is suitable. A thin layer of marbles or mesh on the bottom helps protect eggs from being consumed by the parents.
After spawning, the adults are removed. Eggs are small and adhesive and hatch within 24–36 hours at typical breeding temperatures; the fry are free-swimming within three to four days. First foods should be very fine — infusoria, commercial liquid fry food, or vinegar eelworms — before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii and finely crushed flake. Growth is relatively fast for a small tetra, and juveniles show adult colouration within a few weeks.
In the aquarium
Hemigrammus gracilis is a peaceful, undemanding community fish well suited to planted aquaria and to aquarists seeking a historically interesting Brazilian species rather than a headline display fish. It should be kept in groups of at least six, both because it is a schooling species by nature and because a group shows the fish's best behaviour and keeps individuals confident. A tank of 23.5 in or longer is appropriate for a proper school.
Water chemistry can follow the species' dual São Francisco–Amazon heritage: it is tolerant of a range from moderately soft and slightly acidic to neutral and moderately hard, reflecting the varied chemistry of its natural range. Temperatures in the 72–82 °F range are appropriate. It mixes well with other small peaceful tetras, rasboras, small corydoras, and similar community species. It presents no special dietary or water-quality demands beyond the general care standards for small neotropical characins.
Conservation
Hemigrammus gracilis is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment completed on 7 November 2018. The designation reflects the species' reasonably wide distribution across both the São Francisco and Amazon basins and its tolerance of a range of freshwater habitats. FishBase records high population resilience, with a minimum population doubling time of less than fifteen months — a characteristic shared by small, fast-maturing, prolific tetras generally.
While the species' type locality at Lagoa Santa in Minas Gerais lies within a historically disturbed landscape — the São Francisco basin has experienced decades of water extraction, agricultural runoff, and dam construction — the overall population is not currently considered at elevated risk. No major conservation programmes target it specifically. Like all small freshwater fishes, it benefits indirectly from watershed protection and water-quality management in Brazil's interior basins.
