Serrapinnus piaba was originally described by the Danish zoologist Christian Frederik Lütken in 1875 from material collected in Brazil; the authority is rendered in parentheses because the species has since been moved from its original genus. The valid name, as recorded by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, is Serrapinnus piaba (Lütken, 1875). The species belongs to the subfamily Cheirodontinae within the large family Characidae, and the genus Serrapinnus was erected to accommodate a group of small cheirodontine characids of South America.
The common name 'piaba' is a broad vernacular term used across Brazil for numerous small characid fishes; it conveys little taxonomic precision and is applied to many species. Within the aquarium trade the name is seldom encountered, and the fish is more likely to be of interest to researchers studying reproductive biology or stream ecology than to hobbyists seeking it by name.
Morphology
Serrapinnus piaba is a slender, laterally compressed small characid reaching a maximum recorded total length of approximately 1.5 in. The body form is typical of schooling cheirodontines: a fusiform, streamlined shape suited to open-water shoaling, with a silvery flanks and the translucent appearance common to small characids.
A defining feature of Cheirodontinae males is the presence of hooks on the anal-fin rays — minute, posteriorly directed bony projections used in grasping the female during spawning. These hooks distinguish Serrapinnus and related genera from many similarly sized schooling characids. Sexual dimorphism beyond this feature is modest; ripe females can be distinguished by a visibly fuller abdomen when in breeding condition.
Habitat
The species is recorded from the São Francisco River basin of Brazil, one of the country's major river systems draining the semi-arid interior of northeastern Brazil, and from at least one coastal Atlantic drainage — the rio Ceará Mirim in the state of Rio Grande do Norte. FishBase characterizes the species' habitat as freshwater ponds and benthopelagic zones in tropical conditions.
The rio Ceará Mirim populations studied for reproductive biology inhabit a seasonally variable environment where rainfall and temperature fluctuate substantially between wet and dry seasons. Water parameters recorded from FishBase indicate a tolerance for a moderate range: temperatures between roughly 20 and 81 °F, pH 6.0–7.5, and hardness up to approximately 25 dH. The species is likely to favour slower-moving or standing waters with sufficient prey invertebrates and vegetated margins.
Feeding
Serrapinnus piaba is a small omnivore in the characid mould, feeding on small aquatic invertebrates, zooplankton, and whatever other suitable food items are available in the water column and at the surface. The benthopelagic habitat classification suggests foraging across a range of depths rather than being strictly a surface or bottom feeder.
In an aquarium the species would be expected to accept a range of small prepared foods — fine flake, micro-pellets — as well as live and frozen small invertebrates such as Daphnia, Cyclops, and newly hatched brine shrimp. Its small adult size means food particles must be appropriately tiny.
Mating
Like other cheirodontine characids, Serrapinnus piaba is an egg-scattering spawner. Males possess anal-fin hooks used during contact spawning: these hooks allow the male to grasp the female's fins briefly while eggs and sperm are released simultaneously, increasing fertilization success. This contact-spawning strategy is a defining characteristic of the Cheirodontinae and sets them apart from most other small characids, which scatter eggs without physical contact.
Field studies from the rio Ceará Mirim found that male and female reproductive timing, while overlapping, are driven by different environmental cues. Rainfall and water temperature positively correlate with female reproductive activity, while day length (photoperiod) is negatively correlated with male gonadal development — that is, males come into breeding condition as days shorten toward the end of the austral summer. The reproductive period in the studied population ran from January through April, coinciding with the regional wet season.
Breeding
Spawning in Serrapinnus piaba follows the egg-scattering pattern typical of small characids: adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs are deposited among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or detritus, with no subsequent parental care. The mean absolute fecundity recorded in the rio Ceará Mirim population was 441 oocytes per female, providing a basis for understanding reproductive effort in this small-bodied species.
Breeding is seasonal in natural populations, concentrated in the January–April wet season when warmer temperatures and rising water levels signal suitable conditions. The interplay of rainfall, temperature, and photoperiod means males and females are likely not in simultaneous peak reproductive condition throughout the entire season, with male readiness peaking somewhat earlier or later than female peak fecundity depending on conditions. No specialist breeding reports from aquarium settings are available in the literature consulted.
In the aquarium
Serrapinnus piaba is not an established aquarium fish in the hobbyist mainstream and is unlikely to be found in ordinary retail trade. Its primary significance is scientific — as a subject of reproductive-biology field studies — rather than ornamental. A hobbyist encountering the species would find a small, peaceful schooling characid with standard small-tetra requirements: soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water, temperatures in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius, and a diet of small prepared and live foods.
As with all small schooling characids, it would do best kept in groups of six or more in a planted tank with subdued lighting and gentle flow. Its small adult size (under 2 in TL) means it is compatible with other similarly sized peaceful fish but vulnerable to anything large enough to eat it. Any captive stock would almost certainly be wild-caught or research-derived rather than commercially tank-bred.
Conservation
Serrapinnus piaba is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the status confirmed as current as of a 2018 assessment. The species' broad distribution across the São Francisco basin — one of Brazil's largest river systems — and its occurrence in multiple drainages support this status. No major range-wide threats have elevated its risk category.
Nonetheless, the São Francisco River basin has experienced significant hydrological alteration through damming, water diversion for agriculture and the São Francisco River Integration Project, and agricultural run-off. Populations in smaller coastal drainages such as the rio Ceará Mirim inhabit rivers in the semi-arid northeast of Brazil, a region under significant water-stress pressure. Continued monitoring of small-bodied characid communities in these systems remains important as climate change and land-use intensification affect seasonal flow regimes on which the species' breeding cycle depends.
