Phenacogaster franciscoensis was described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1911. The type locality is given as Boqueiras, near the mouth of the Rio Porto (also recorded as Rio Preto), within the São Francisco River basin of Brazil. The valid name is recorded in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes as Phenacogaster franciscoensis Eigenmann, 1911; the species has remained in genus Phenacogaster, established by Eigenmann in 1907, since its original description.
Phenacogaster is placed within Characidae, subfamily Characinae. The genus contains a number of small South American characids distributed across major river drainages, with P. franciscoensis being the species associated with the São Francisco system — a drainage that lies geographically isolated from the Amazonian and Paraná basins and consequently harbours a number of endemic fishes. No synonyms are recorded for this species under the current treatment.
Morphology
Phenacogaster franciscoensis is a small, slender characid. FishBase records a maximum standard length of 1.5 in.
