Taxonomy & naming
Parapristella aubynei was described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1909 in the Annals of the Carnegie Museum, based on material from Lama Stop-off in Guyana. The holotype is deposited at the Field Museum of Natural History (FMNH 52698, ex CM 1042). Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name; the parenthetical authority reflects that the species was not described in Parapristella but was later transferred to that genus.
The genus Parapristella belongs to the subfamily Pristellinae within the family Characidae, grouping it with small, semi-translucent tetras of South American freshwaters. Pristellinae includes the genus Pristella, whose sole species P. maxillaris — the X-ray tetra — is the most frequently kept member of the group in the aquarium trade. Parapristella is a smaller, less commercially prominent genus and remains underrepresented in both taxonomic revisions and hobbyist documentation.
Morphology
Parapristella aubynei reaches a maximum recorded length of 2 in standard length according to FishBase. Like other pristelline characids it is slender and laterally compressed, with a body translucency that allows the vertebral column and organ silhouettes to show through the flanks — a trait shared with its close relative Pristella maxillaris and the source of the common 'glass tetra' grouping applied loosely to these fishes.
