Taxonomy & naming
Hemigrammus yinyang was formally described by Flávio C.T. Lima and Luís A. Sousa in 2009. The type locality is an igarapé (forest stream) called igarapé Castanha, in the state of Amazonas, Brazil. The holotype, MZUSP 99300, is a specimen of 1 in standard length, presumed female, deposited at the Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo.
The species was placed in Hemigrammus, one of the largest characid genera, on the basis of the presence of scales on the lower lobe of the caudal fin — the traditional defining character of the genus within the broader characid assemblage. Some subsequent checklists of Characiformes have noted the generic name Holopristis as a potential senior synonym relevant to some members of the Hemigrammus complex; the current checklist treatment retains Hemigrammus yinyang under Lima & Sousa, 2009. The Catalog of Fishes governs the valid name.
Morphology
Hemigrammus yinyang is a small, slender characid reaching a recorded maximum of 1 in standard length. The body is laterally compressed and largely translucent in life, as is typical for Amazonian microcharacids occupying blackwater streams. The species' most distinctive feature is the humeral pattern: a pair of dark blotches positioned one above the other on the shoulder, separated by a vivid orange or reddish-orange spot. The arrangement recalls a yin-yang symbol — dark contrasting with bright — and is the direct inspiration for the specific epithet.
Apart from this humeral pattern the colour scheme is subdued, with the posterior body showing a faint lateral stripe and the caudal peduncle carrying the dark caudal spot typical of many Hemigrammus species. Sexual dimorphism details are not well documented from the original description; the holotype was a presumed female of 1 in SL.
Habitat
The known range of Hemigrammus yinyang is restricted to tributaries of the middle rio Tiquié, a tributary of the rio Uaupés, itself a major left-bank tributary of the upper rio Negro in the Brazilian state of Amazonas. This places the species firmly within the rio Negro drainage, one of the world's great blackwater river systems, characterised by low pH, extremely low mineral content, dark tannin-stained water, and soft sandy or leaf-littered substrates.
Igarapé Castanha, the type locality, is a forest stream of the kind typical of the upper Negro region: narrow, shaded, slow-flowing to near-still, with water coloured amber to dark brown by dissolved humic acids. Temperatures in the upper Negro basin are warm year-round, generally in the mid-to-upper 20s Celsius. Specific water-chemistry data for the type locality are not published in the available cache, but the regional pattern strongly implies acidic, very soft conditions.
Feeding
No dedicated feeding study exists for Hemigrammus yinyang. By analogy with other small Hemigrammus from blackwater tributaries of the upper Amazon system, the species is expected to be a generalist microinvertivore, taking small aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae, zooplankton, and organic surface particles. The blackwater igarapés of the upper Negro basin support dense communities of such microcharacids, which typically exploit both the water column and the leaf-litter layer.
In the aquarium, small Hemigrammus species of this type accept fine-grade prepared foods including micro-pellets and powdered flake, as well as live and frozen foods such as Artemia nauplii, micro-worms, and Daphnia. A varied diet is advisable to maintain condition in a fish that sees naturally varied inputs in its home streams.
Mating
No published observations of reproductive behaviour exist for Hemigrammus yinyang in the wild. As a Hemigrammus, it is expected to follow the standard characid open-spawning pattern: egg-scattering among fine-leaved vegetation or over substrate, with adhesive eggs and no parental care. Males of small Hemigrammus species commonly display to females by intensifying colour and extending fins; pair formation is loose rather than a lasting bond.
The mating season in the upper Negro tributaries likely coincides with changes in river level and temperature that accompany the wet and dry seasons, but specific phenological data for this species are absent from the literature and from the available cache.
Breeding
Hemigrammus yinyang has not been bred in captivity to any documented degree. Based on the biology of related Hemigrammus from blackwater systems, breeding would be expected to involve scattering small adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, with incubation at warm temperatures of around 79–82 °F. Adults would be expected to eat their own eggs, requiring removal of spawning medium or separation of adults after spawning.
Blackwater-origin Hemigrammus often respond well to soft, acidic water for conditioning and spawning in captivity — mimicking their natural igarapé chemistry with peat filtration or RO water softened with blackwater extract can be important for egg viability. Given how rarely this species appears in the trade, captive-breeding records are effectively absent.
In the aquarium
Hemigrammus yinyang is not an established aquarium species and appears only rarely in specialist collections. Its small size (under 1 in SL) and presumed blackwater origin make it suitable for a soft, acidic, well-planted nano or species tank that replicates the dimly lit igarapé environment of the upper rio Negro. Subdued lighting, dark substrate, abundant fine-leaved vegetation or leaf litter, and water filtered through peat or conditioned with blackwater additives would best serve the species.
Any aquarium specimens should be kept in a small group, as is standard for Hemigrammus tetras, to encourage natural behaviour and reduce individual stress. Tankmates, if any, should be similarly small and equally suited to very soft, acidic water — nano rasboras, other upper Negro microcharacids, or small dwarf cichlids from the same basin are possibilities. Because the species is so rarely traded, sourcing is the primary practical obstacle rather than keeping difficulty.
Conservation
Hemigrammus yinyang is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment published in 2025. The Least Concern designation reflects the absence of evidence for rapid population decline or sufficiently restricted range to warrant a threatened category, rather than extensive survey data confirming robust populations.
The species is endemic to a relatively remote part of the upper rio Negro basin in Amazonas, Brazil — a region that retains extensive primary forest cover and has not yet experienced the levels of deforestation and river modification that have affected other parts of Amazonia. However, the upper Negro and its tributaries are not without pressure: illegal gold mining (garimpo) and associated mercury contamination are documented concerns across the broader Negro watershed, and climate-driven changes to flood regimes may affect the small igarapé systems on which specialised micro-endemics depend. The species warrants continued monitoring as survey coverage of the upper Negro ichthyofauna improves.
