Cynopotamus gouldingi is a predatory characin from the upper Rio Negro drainage of Amazonas, Brazil, described by the Brazilian ichthyologist Naércio Menezes in 1987. Like other members of the genus Cynopotamus, it is a dogtooth-bearing fish built for capturing smaller prey — a sleek, silver-bodied hunter suited to the blackwater tributaries of the Negro basin rather than the polished community aquarium.

Taxonomy & naming

Cynopotamus gouldingi was described by Naércio A. Menezes in 1987, with the type locality recorded as the upper Rio Negro drainage, Amazonas, Brazil. The description appeared as part of Menezes's doctoral dissertation at the Universidade de São Paulo; the work focused on a revision of closely related characin genera. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid name as Cynopotamus gouldingi Menezes, 1987.

The genus Cynopotamus is placed within the family Characidae, the largest family of freshwater fishes. Cynopotamus is characterised by a distinctive dentition that gives members of the group their common name of dogtooth tetras or dog characins: the jaw teeth are enlarged, conical, and well-spaced, adapted for gripping slippery prey. The genus occurs across much of tropical South America, primarily in major river drainages of Brazil, Venezuela, and adjacent countries.

The species epithet gouldingi honours the American ichthyologist and Amazon fish biologist Michael Goulding, whose fieldwork in Amazonian rivers — and in the Rio Negro in particular — contributed substantially to the understanding of Amazonian fish ecology and distribution.

Morphology

As a member of Cynopotamus, C. gouldingi shares the elongated, moderately compressed body form typical of the genus. The body is silvery, often with a lateral stripe or iridescent sheen depending on lighting and condition. The enlarged, caniniform teeth are the defining structural feature of the genus: the front teeth of both jaws are notably larger than those further back, giving the animal a distinctly predatory profile even among characins.

Precise size data for this species are sparse in the accessible literature. Within Cynopotamus, species range from small to medium bodied; most members of the genus reach somewhere between 8 and 6 in total length as adults, though the exact maximum for C. gouldingi is not confirmed here from a primary source. The species should be presumed a capable piscivore based on the genus's feeding ecology.

Habitat

Cynopotamus gouldingi is known from the upper Rio Negro drainage in the state of Amazonas, Brazil, based on the type material recorded at its original description. The Rio Negro is one of the world's great blackwater rivers — its waters are deeply stained with dissolved organic compounds (tannins and humic acids), are very soft and acidic, carry extremely low mineral content, and are characteristically warm.

Blackwater habitats of the upper Negro system include igapó flooded forests, shallow forest streams, and river channels with sandy or leaf-litter substrates and little emergent aquatic vegetation. The water is typically highly transparent despite its dark colour, and dissolved oxygen levels can be lower than in whitewater rivers. A predatory characin in this environment would exploit the sheltered margins, submerged root tangles, and leaf accumulations where smaller prey fish congregate.

Feeding

Cynopotamus species are generalised piscivores and invertebrate predators. The enlarged caniniform dentition is well adapted for seizing slippery, evasive prey: smaller fish are the primary food source for adult individuals, supplemented by large aquatic invertebrates. Juveniles likely include invertebrates and small crustaceans in the diet before shifting toward piscivory as they grow.

In an aquarium context, Cynopotamus species do not readily accept prepared dry foods; live or frozen fish and meaty invertebrates (prawns, mussel, earthworm) are typically required to sustain them long-term. This dietary inflexibility is a significant factor limiting their appeal to the general aquarium market.

Mating

No specific observations of mating behaviour in Cynopotamus gouldingi are documented in the accessible literature. Based on the biology of the family Characidae and the genus more broadly, the species is expected to follow the typical characid reproductive strategy: open-water egg-scattering with adhesive eggs deposited among fine-leaved plants or submerged debris, and no parental care by either parent.

Sexual dimorphism in Cynopotamus, as in many characids, is subtle at rest, with ripe females potentially being deeper-bodied than males when in spawning condition. Specific data on courtship or spawning triggers for this species are not available.

Breeding

Cynopotamus gouldingi has not been documented in captive breeding in the accessible literature, and breeding accounts from the aquarium hobby are absent. If the species follows Characidae norms, spawning would involve egg-scattering into fine-leaved vegetation or open water, adhesive eggs with no parental care, and fry that are free-swimming within a few days of hatching.

Given the piscivorous nature of the adults, even if spawning were achieved in captivity, separating eggs and fry from the parents immediately would be essential. The very specific blackwater water chemistry of the natural habitat — extremely soft, acidic, warm water — would likely be a prerequisite for any serious breeding attempt.

In the aquarium

Cynopotamus gouldingi is essentially absent from the mainstream aquarium trade. It is a specialist species occasionally encountered by researchers, dedicated biotope aquarists, or through South American fish importers handling scientific or unusual material. Its predatory nature makes it incompatible with a typical community tank; it should be kept only with fish of similar size that it cannot swallow.

For those keeping the species in a biotope context, the natural environment calls for very soft, acidic, blackwater conditions: pH well below 7, negligible hardness, warm temperatures (approximately 79–86 °F), tannin-stained water from leaf litter or botanicals, low light, and a substrate of fine sand with leaf accumulations. Feeding is the primary challenge; live or frozen meaty foods are the practical option. Data on long-term captive care are sparse.

Conservation

Cynopotamus gouldingi has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; it carries the status Not Evaluated (NE). This is true of many lesser-known Amazonian characins, particularly those described relatively recently or known from limited collections. The absence of an assessment should not be taken as an indication that the species faces no threats.

The upper Rio Negro drainage, while remote and still largely intact, faces incremental pressures from deforestation, illegal gold mining (garimpo), and associated mercury contamination — all documented problems in the Brazilian Amazon. The species' restricted known range and limited representation in museum collections mean that any significant habitat degradation in its home drainage could affect it before a formal assessment is ever conducted. Encouraging proper collection records and supporting systematic surveys of Amazonian fish diversity are the most constructive responses available to the scientific and hobbyist communities.
