Moenkhausia bellasomniosa is a small characid from blackwater tributaries of the upper Rio Negro drainage in the Brazilian state of Amazonas, described in 2019 from a type locality in the municipality of São Gabriel da Cachoeira. Its scientific name translates from Latin as 'sleeping beauty' — a reference both to the fish's graceful appearance and to the dark, tannin-stained forest streams it inhabits, where the water moves quietly beneath a canopy that filters the Amazonian light to amber. Known in the local Tukano language as batiawu, this recently described species remains little studied outside the original publication and is not yet assessed by the IUCN.

Taxonomy & naming

Moenkhausia bellasomniosa was described by Soares, Lima, Bastos and Rapp Py-Daniel in 2019. The type locality is a small tributary of the Rio Curicuriari in the municipality of São Gabriel da Cachoeira, state of Amazonas, Brazil (approximately 0°14'39"S, 67°03'31"W); the holotype is deposited at INPA (Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazônia) as INPA 49753. The description appeared in Copeia, volume 107, number 2. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes governs the valid name.

Moenkhausia is one of the largest genera in the family Characidae, with well over 70 described species spread across lowland South America. The genus is diagnosed primarily on characters of the lateral-line squamation and caudal scalation, though its boundaries have shifted repeatedly as molecular and morphological reanalyses have refined what actually constitutes a natural group. M. bellasomniosa joins a growing list of species from the Rio Negro basin whose formal descriptions have followed relatively recent collections, underscoring how much new diversity the blackwater drainages of northwestern Amazonia still yield to methodical survey work.

Morphology

Detailed morphometric data for Moenkhausia bellasomniosa in the open literature are limited to what appeared in the original description. The species is a small to medium-sized characid with the body form typical of the genus: laterally compressed, moderately deep-bodied, with a relatively large eye and the small adipose fin characteristic of most characiforms. Coloration in life has not been extensively documented in aquarium sources, and published photographs beyond those in the original description are sparse.

As with many Moenkhausia species, the diagnostic characters that distinguish M. bellasomniosa from its congeners are subtle and are drawn from counts and proportions rather than from a unique colour pattern visible to the casual observer. Researchers examining Moenkhausia material from the Rio Negro should consult the original description directly for the meristic and morphometric data that define the species.

Habitat

The type locality lies in terra firme forest — upland Amazonian rainforest not subject to seasonal flooding — where streams drain into the Rio Curicuriari, itself a tributary of the upper Rio Negro near São Gabriel da Cachoeira. The original description notes that the species was collected from small pools and fast-water reaches with rocky substrate, as well as from the dark, slow-moving forest streams typical of the region. All of these environments share the blackwater signature of the Rio Negro system: water stained a deep amber-brown by tannins leaching from leaf litter and organic debris, extremely soft, and acidic.

Water chemistry data for comparable habitats in the region indicate pH values typically in the range of 4.5 to 6.5 and hardness values well below 10 mg/L carbonate hardness, with temperatures in the 77–82 °F (77–82 °F) range. Light penetration in these shaded forest streams is low, and leaf litter plays a central ecological role, providing both habitat structure and a substrate for the invertebrate prey that such tetras feed upon.

Feeding

No dedicated dietary study of Moenkhausia bellasomniosa has been published. As a member of Characidae from a terra firme blackwater stream, it is expected to be an omnivore in the broad sense shared by most of its relatives: taking small aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae, and terrestrial insects that fall onto the water surface, supplemented by algae and plant material where available. The invertebrate community supported by leaf-litter decomposition in Amazonian forest streams forms a major prey base for small characids in these environments.

In the aquarium, Moenkhausia species generally accept a mixed diet of quality flake and small pellets alongside live or frozen foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, and small bloodworm. Offering variety keeps fish in better condition and is consistent with the opportunistic feeding ecology characteristic of the genus.

Mating

No published observations of mating behaviour specific to Moenkhausia bellasomniosa exist in the available literature. Based on what is known of Moenkhausia and Characidae more broadly, the species is expected to be an egg-scattering open spawner without parental care — the reproductive strategy typical of the vast majority of characins outside specialised groups such as Lebiasinidae.

Males of Moenkhausia species in spawning condition typically exhibit some degree of enhanced intensity in body or fin coloration and engage in active pursuit of females. Spawning itself is a brief affair in which eggs are scattered among fine-leaved vegetation, submerged leaf litter, or other suitable substrate, with the adhesive eggs settling on or attaching loosely to whatever surfaces are available. Neither parent guards the eggs or fry.

Breeding

Captive breeding of Moenkhausia bellasomniosa has not been documented in publicly available hobbyist or scientific literature as of this writing, which reflects both the species' recent description and its scarcity in the trade. The general breeding approach for Moenkhausia applies by analogy: condition adults on a varied diet including live or frozen foods, provide a dimly lit tank with fine-leaved plants or a synthetic spawning mop, and perform small water changes with slightly cooler, very soft and acidic water to trigger spawning activity.

Eggs are small and adhesive and would be expected to hatch within 24–48 hours at typical warm temperatures, yielding tiny fry that require infusoria or other fine first foods before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp. As with all egg-scattering characids, adults should be removed after spawning to prevent predation on the eggs.

In the aquarium

Moenkhausia bellasomniosa is rarely encountered in the ornamental trade and, where available, is most likely wild-collected from the Rio Negro system rather than captive-bred. Aquarists fortunate enough to obtain the species should replicate the blackwater biotope: very soft, acidic water (pH 4.5–6.5, hardness below 5 °dH), temperature in the 77–82 °F range, subdued lighting, a dark substrate, and a generous layer of dried leaf litter such as Indian almond or oak leaves that gradually tints the water and releases tannins. Heavy planting with fine-leaved species and driftwood completes the effect.

Like most small Moenkhausia, this species is a schooling fish and should be kept in groups of six or more. Suitable tankmates are other small, peaceful blackwater species from the Rio Negro — pencilfish, small hatchetfish, dwarf cichlids such as Apistogramma, and other small characids. Strong filtration flow should be avoided; gentle circulation through a sponge or small internal filter is more appropriate. The species' scarcity means little hobbyist experience has been publicly accumulated, and keepers willing to document their observations make a genuine contribution to the community's knowledge base.

Conservation

Moenkhausia bellasomniosa has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List. Its 2019 description is recent enough that a formal evaluation has not yet been conducted, and the species remains Not Evaluated (NE) in IUCN terms. The known range is narrow — the type material comes from a single small tributary of the Rio Curicuriari in Amazonas state — though the actual extent of the species' distribution within the upper Rio Negro drainage has not been systematically surveyed.

The upper Rio Negro near São Gabriel da Cachoeira lies within a region of relatively intact Amazonian forest, and the municipality is close to indigenous territories and protected areas that afford some habitat stability. Nonetheless, blackwater stream fishes with small known ranges are inherently vulnerable to localised threats such as deforestation, gold mining contamination, and over-collection for the trade. Systematic surveys to clarify the species' full distribution and abundance would be a necessary first step toward any conservation assessment.
