Hyphessobrycon melanostichos is a small tetra from the upper Rio Tapajós drainage of Brazil, named for the bold black longitudinal stripe that defines its silhouette. Endemic to the Rio Doze de Outubro — a clear-water tributary draining the Tapajós headwaters — it inhabits semilentic stretches over sand and stone, and has attracted quiet interest from hobbyists who keep it in groups where the males' territorial interactions bring out striking colour. Taxonomy & naming

Hyphessobrycon melanostichos was described by Carvalho and Bertaco in 2006 from specimens collected in the Rio Doze de Outubro of the upper Rio Tapajós basin, Mato Grosso, Brazil. The valid name is recorded in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) under the original authority. It is placed in Hyphessobrycon, one of the largest and most taxonomically challenging genera in the family Characidae — a grouping assembled largely on shared primitive features rather than shared derived ones, and subject to ongoing revision as molecular work refines the internal topology of the family.

The specific epithet is constructed from the Greek melano (black or dark) and stichos (row or line), a direct reference to the conspicuous black longitudinal stripe running along the fish's flank, the most immediately recognisable feature in the field and in aquaria. No subspecies are recognised. The species is not known by any widely established common name, though 'blackstripe tetra' is occasionally used informally in line with the etymology.

Morphology

Hyphessobrycon melanostichos is a small, laterally compressed tetra reaching a recorded maximum standard length of approximately 1.5 in for males and unsexed specimens (FishBase), with Seriously Fish citing a practical female/male size of around 1 in SL under aquarium conditions — a discrepancy that may reflect differences in wild-caught type specimens versus aquarium-reared stock. In body form it is a typical small Hyphessobrycon: a relatively deep, oval profile with a forked caudal fin and large eyes that fill a significant proportion of the head.

The species is immediately identified by the prominent black longitudinal stripe that runs from the operculum to the base of the caudal fin, giving the fish the 'row of black' its name describes. Surrounding body colour is typically silvery to pale yellowish, and the fins may show modest pigmentation. Sexual dimorphism is present but subtle; males tend to show more intense colouration when in condition and displaying, consistent with the pattern in the broader genus.

Habitat

Hyphessobrycon melanostichos is endemic to the Rio Doze de Outubro, a tributary of the upper Rio Tapajós basin in Mato Grosso, Brazil. The Tapajós is a large southern tributary of the Amazon, draining a vast interior plateau; its headwater streams run clear and oligotrophic over sandy and rocky beds. The species is recorded from semilentic — partially still — stretches of this river where current slows over sand and small stones, with moderately submerged aquatic vegetation and riparian growth providing structure and shade.

The clear-water environment implies low conductivity and moderate to slightly acidic pH conditions typical of the Brazilian interior shield, though specific chemistry data from the collection locality are not detailed in published sources. The restricted known range — a single named tributary — makes this species relatively narrowly endemic within the Tapajós system, a fact relevant to its conservation standing.

Feeding

In nature, Hyphessobrycon melanostichos is an omnivore that exploits the range of small food items available in a clear Amazonian headwater stream. Mating

Hyphessobrycon melanostichos is an egg-scattering free spawner with no parental care, following the general reproductive pattern of the genus. Males are noted to be territorial in smaller aquaria, and their colouration intensifies markedly when kept with conspecific rivals — suggesting that competition between males is an important component of the species' mating system, with colour and display serving as signals in male–male competition as well as in courtship.

The best colouration is reliably achieved when several males are maintained together in a sufficiently spacious tank, where they establish loose social hierarchies and display more or less continuously. Courtship itself follows the typical Hyphessobrycon pattern: a displaying male drives or courts a receptive female toward fine-leaved vegetation or a similarly dense substrate, where eggs are scattered and fertilised during a brief, active spawning pass.

Breeding

Hyphessobrycon melanostichos is an egg-scattering, open spawner that deposits small, adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic plants or over clumps of Java moss or synthetic spawning mops. Like most small tetras, the adults show no parental care and will readily consume their own eggs if left undisturbed; in a dedicated breeding setup, either the adults are removed promptly after spawning or the eggs are harvested to a separate rearing container.

Breeding temperature should be toward the warmer end of the species' range — approximately 77–82 °F — and the water kept soft and slightly acidic, reflecting the clear headwater conditions of the natural habitat. Eggs hatch within a few days at warm temperatures; the tiny fry initially require very fine foods such as infusoria or commercial liquid fry diets before moving on to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. A group of 12 or more adults in a 35.5 in tank is recommended by experienced keepers for reliable spawning behaviour.

In the aquarium

Hyphessobrycon melanostichos is kept successfully in standard community or species aquaria, though it shows at its best in a species-focused setup that allows a proper group to form. Seriously Fish recommends a minimum tank size of 60 × 30 × 12 in for a starter group, while a 35.5 in aquarium housing 12 or more individuals is the more comfortable arrangement for seeing the species at its most animated and colourful. The combination of a larger group and the natural male rivalry is what unlocks the contrast between pale body and bold black stripe.

Water parameters should target conditions consistent with the clear headwaters of the Tapajós: temperature 73–82 °F, pH 5.5–7.5, and low to moderate hardness (GH 0–179 ppm per Seriously Fish; Fishipedia suggests GH 2–10). A tank decorated with fine-leaved plants, driftwood, and a sand or fine gravel substrate mirrors the natural habitat and encourages natural behaviour. The species is peaceful toward other tankmates of similar size and disposition, but males should not be overcrowded without adequate space to establish loose territories. Diet should be varied, with live or frozen invertebrate foods offered regularly alongside good-quality prepared foods.

Conservation

Hyphessobrycon melanostichos is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment carried out in November 2018 by the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio). The LC status reflects the absence of immediate threats severe enough to approach threshold criteria, combined with the species' apparent stability at the time of assessment.

The species' known range is restricted to the Rio Doze de Outubro and the broader upper Tapajós basin — a relatively contained area compared with more widespread Amazonian characids. The Tapajós headwaters lie in a region of ongoing agricultural and infrastructural pressure, and the long-term fate of clear-water headwater habitats in the Brazilian interior is not without concern. Future monitoring of known localities remains advisable given the species' narrow endemism.
