Taxonomy & naming
Hyphessobrycon piranga was described by Patrícia Camelier, Fernando C. P. Dagosta, and Manoela M. F. Marinho in 2018, in a paper published in the Journal of Fish Biology (vol. 92, no. 4, pp. 1149–1162). The paper characterised it as a 'new remarkable sexually dimorphic miniature species' of Hyphessobrycon from the upper Rio Tapajós basin, a drainage arising on the southern edge of the Brazilian Shield in Mato Grosso. The Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Hyphessobrycon piranga Camelier, Dagosta & Marinho, 2018, within the family Characidae.
The genus Hyphessobrycon is one of the largest and most taxonomically complex in Characidae, encompassing several hundred described species across tropical and subtropical South America. Systematic placement within the genus remains a matter of ongoing revision; the 2018 paper assigned it on the basis of a suite of morphological characters consistent with Hyphessobrycon sensu lato. No subspecies or synonyms are recorded.
Morphology
H. piranga is a miniature species, with wild-caught individuals reaching approximately 1 in total length; aquarium-raised specimens may reach around 1.5 in TL under optimal conditions. The body is slender and laterally compressed in the typical hyphessobrycon form.
The species is strikingly sexually dimorphic. Males are predominantly red — the body, all unpaired fins, and much of the paired fins suffused with an intense red coloration that gives the fish its name. Females are distinctly yellowish, lacking the red pigmentation of males. This bold dichotomy is unusual even within a genus known for colourful species, and was a primary diagnostic character used in the original description. No detailed meristic data from the cache are available beyond these colour characters.
Habitat
H. piranga is known from the Rio Verde and Rio Juruena, tributaries of the upper Rio Tapajós basin in the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil. The Tapajós is a major southern Amazon tributary draining the Brazilian Shield; the upper basin is characterised by clear to blackwater rivers with sandy and pebbled substrates.
Collection records indicate the species inhabits clear, flowing water with medium to fast currents over pebbles, sand, and accumulated organic material. This is typical of shield-river headwater streams — well-oxygenated, often slightly acidic to neutral, and subject to seasonal fluctuation in level and flow. The restricted range within the upper Tapajós makes it a species of localised distribution within an otherwise vast drainage.
Feeding
No detailed dietary study of H. piranga in the wild has been published in the available literature. As a small characid of flowing shield-river habitat, it almost certainly feeds as an opportunistic omnivore in the manner typical of Hyphessobrycon — taking small aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and organic detritus from the water column and substrate.
In aquarium conditions the species would be expected to accept finely crushed flake foods, small granules, and live or frozen foods such as Daphnia, baby brine shrimp, and micro-worms appropriate to its small size. Data are sparse; keepers should treat it as a generalised small omnivore until more specific information becomes available.
Mating
H. piranga is presumed to reproduce by egg-scattering, the reproductive mode universal in Hyphessobrycon. Males use their pronounced red coloration in courtship display, a trait highlighted in the original description as functionally significant. The specific epithet piranga refers both to the Tupi word for 'red' and to the bird genus Piranga (tanagers), whose vivid males similarly use bright coloration in signalling.
No specific mating observations are documented in the available sources. As with other small hyphessobrycons, spawning likely involves a displaying male pursuing a receptive female into fine-leaved vegetation or other cover, with eggs scattered and left unguarded. Sexual dimorphism is so pronounced that the two sexes are easily distinguished at maturity.
Breeding
Detailed captive breeding records for H. piranga are not available in the published literature or hobbyist sources reviewed. The general breeding strategy can be inferred from the genus: egg-scattering over fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, with small adhesive eggs and no parental care. Adults would be expected to consume eggs if left in the breeding vessel.
A breeding temperature around 75–77 °F and slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 6.5–7.5) matching the species' native clear shield rivers would be a reasonable starting point. Fry would require very fine first foods given the miniature adult size. The species' scarcity in the hobby means practical breeding data remain limited.
In the aquarium
H. piranga is rarely encountered in the ornamental fish trade and is primarily of interest to species enthusiasts and those focused on upper Tapajós fauna. Its small size — around 1–1.5 in — and peaceful disposition make it suitable for a nano or species aquarium; a group of six or more individuals would best express the social dynamics and the striking colour contrast between scarlet males and yellow females.
Water conditions should reflect the species' origin in clear, flowing shield-river streams: temperature around 75–77 °F, pH 6.5–7.5, with good oxygenation and some current. A well-planted tank with fine-leaved plants, dark substrate, and subdued lighting would likely show the red male coloration to best effect. As with any rare and poorly documented species, care should be conservative and based on the best available analogues within the genus.
Conservation
H. piranga has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; its status is Not Evaluated. The species was described only in 2018 from a restricted range in the upper Rio Tapajós basin, and no post-description population surveys are recorded in the available literature.
The upper Tapajós and its tributaries in Mato Grosso face ongoing pressure from agricultural expansion, deforestation, and altered hydrology associated with soy farming and cattle ranching in the Cerrado-Amazon transition zone. A narrowly distributed miniature species in this landscape is inherently vulnerable, though without formal assessment its risk level cannot be quantified. Formal evaluation by the IUCN would be a useful step, and voucher material from the original description is held in Brazilian ichthyological collections.
