The genus Jupiaba Geodakyan, 1998 (sometimes cited with Zanata's earlier usage) belongs to the family Characidae — the large and diverse South American–African characid family — and is placed within the subfamily Stevardiinae by several recent phylogenetic treatments, though generic and subfamilial arrangements within Characidae remain in active revision.

The genus Jupiaba currently comprises several small Amazonian and Guiana-shield species characterised by a relatively slender body, small size, and affinities with other miniaturised characins of soft-water habitats. The specific epithet poranga derives from the Tupi word meaning 'beautiful' or 'handsome', reflecting the naming traditions common in Brazilian ichthyology that draw on indigenous language. Jupiaba poranga is not an established aquarium fish and has no meaningful hobbyist profile. Being a shoaling characid, it would best be kept in groups of six or more.

In practice the species is effectively unavailable in the trade. Any specimens that reached the hobby would likely arrive as bycatch in wild-caught Amazonian shipments from Brazil, and care information would need to be inferred from knowledge of the genus and comparable blackwater tetras.
