Taxonomy & naming
Brachyplatystoma rousseauxii was formally described by the French naturalist Francis de Laporte de Castelnau in 1855, based on material collected during his expedition to South America. The species belongs to the family Pimelodidae, the long-whiskered catfishes, which encompasses the largest freshwater predatory catfishes of South America. Within Pimelodidae it is placed in the genus Brachyplatystoma, a group of giant, migratory goliath catfishes that also includes the piraíba (B. filamentosum) and the piramutaba (B. vaillantii). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Brachyplatystoma rousseauxii as the valid binomial.
The species has accumulated several synonyms and trade names over the decades, among them Pimelodus rousseauxii Castelnau 1855 (the original combination) and references in older literature to Zungaro dorado or simply 'dorado'. The common name 'dorado catfish' should not be confused with the golden dorado (Salminus brasiliensis), a distantly related salmoniform; and 'dorado' as applied here refers to the brassy-gold sheen of fresh specimens, not any salmonid.
Morphology
The dorado catfish is built for sustained open-water travel. The body is elongate and laterally compressed toward the rear, with a broad, flattened head, a wide terminal mouth bearing three pairs of long, filamentous barbels (one pair of maxillary barbels that can equal or exceed body length, two shorter mandibular pairs), and a deeply forked, lunate tail suited to powerful sustained swimming. The dorsal fin is tall, carried by a stiff locking spine; the large pectoral fins are likewise armed with serrated, locking spines that can deliver a painful wound. The skin is entirely naked — no scales and no bony plates — giving the flanks a smooth, almost silky appearance and a characteristic brassy to golden-yellow iridescence, especially vivid in recently caught fish.
Maximum recorded total length is 75.5 in (FishBase), with standard length typically 47–63 in at full size; Madeira River populations average somewhat smaller. Sexual maturity is reached at approximately 35 in standard length in females and 32 in in males, typically after three or more years of growth. Fecundity is enormous: females can produce 480,000 to over 1,000,000 oocytes per spawning event.
Habitat
The dorado catfish occupies the full length of the Amazon river system, from the broad lower Amazon and its estuary in eastern Brazil through the main-stem rivers of Peru, Colombia and Bolivia up into the swift, oxygen-rich tributaries of the Andean foothills. It is a pelagic migratory fish, spending most of its adult life in open river channels rather than among submerged vegetation or rocky substrates, and it tolerates a wide range of water conditions across its enormous range.
Water conditions span warm tropical temperatures of 79–82 °F (79–82 °F), a near-neutral to slightly acidic pH of 6.5–7.5, and generally soft to moderately hard water typical of Amazonian white-water and clear-water rivers. The species is not a blackwater specialist; it moves freely between whitewater flood-pulse rivers and clearer tributaries according to the hydrological cycle, timing its upstream spawning migrations to coincide with falling or low water periods in the Andes.
Feeding
Brachyplatystoma rousseauxii is an active, open-water piscivore. Adults feed primarily on other fish, pursuing mid-water prey in the main river channel; they will also take large invertebrates opportunistically. In the aquarium setting, juveniles initially demand live or fresh-dead fish, but can be weaned — with patience — onto large frozen foods such as whole prawns, squid and fish fillets, and eventually onto large carnivore pellets.
The core feeding message for any keeper is that tankmates must be too large to swallow, and at adult sizes this means virtually every fish in a typical aquarium is potential prey. Even at 12–15.5 in the dorado catfish can consume surprisingly large fish in a single strike. Feeding frequency can taper off as the fish grows; large adults may feed heavily every few days rather than daily.
Mating
The reproductive biology of Brachyplatystoma rousseauxii is inseparable from its migration. Adults — both sexes — undertake a directed upstream migration from the Amazon estuary toward the Andean foothills, covering up to 11,373 mi over five to six months (and sometimes exceeding two years for the full return cycle). This migration is the longest known for any freshwater fish species, a record confirmed by acoustic telemetry and otolith microchemistry studies.
Spawning is triggered by falling and low-water conditions in Andean tributaries, where males and females aggregate. Fertilisation is external, releasing enormous numbers of buoyant eggs into the current. After spawning the adults return downstream; the larvae and early juveniles drift passively downstream with river flow, eventually reaching the productive várzea floodplains of the lower Amazon and the estuary where they grow to maturity before beginning the cycle again. There is no parental care at any stage.
Breeding
Brachyplatystoma rousseauxii is not bred in the home aquarium. The species requires an unbroken migratory corridor of thousands of kilometres, and spawning is triggered by hydrological and environmental cues in Andean foothill tributaries that cannot be replicated in any captive setting. Even in purpose-built facilities, induced spawning relies on hormonal treatment (hypophysation or synthetic GnRH analogues) under commercial hatchery conditions, and fry are raised in large outdoor ponds or raceways.
Commercial aquaculture of this and related Brachyplatystoma species exists in Brazil, Peru and Colombia, primarily to supply the artisanal and export fish-food market rather than the ornamental trade. Any dorado catfish appearing in the aquarium trade is either a wild-caught juvenile or a hatchery-produced food-fish juvenile diverted into the pet trade. Hobbyists who acquire juveniles should plan for an animal that will grow far beyond the capacity of any home system.
In the aquarium
The dorado catfish is a fish for public aquaria and a small number of specialist private collectors with extraordinary facilities — full stop. Adults reach 59–75 in and weigh scores of kilograms; the minimum practical aquarium volume is in the range of 20,0.5 US gal, with heavy mechanical and biological filtration, very frequent large water changes and a system capable of processing the waste output of an animal of this size. The species is a size trap of the first order: juveniles 4–6 in are occasionally available and superficially resemble manageable catfish, but growth is rapid and there is no ceiling that brings the fish into home-aquarium territory.
The skin is entirely scaleless and naked, making this species more sensitive to copper-based treatments and many other medications than scaled fish. If disease treatment is necessary, use copper and organophosphate products at half the stated dose or avoid them entirely in favour of salt baths and less toxic alternatives. Never use a net to move this fish; the locking, serrated pectoral and dorsal spines tangle in netting instantly and can inflict serious lacerations on the keeper. Always use a large, smooth-walled container to transfer or catch the fish.
Water conditions should be warm (79–82 °F / 79–82 °F), pH 6.5–7.5, with essentially zero ammonia and nitrite and nitrate kept below 30 mg/l through regular water changes. The species is predominantly active and feeds mainly in open water; it does not strictly require caves or dense cover but appreciates a large open swim space. Tankmates — if any — must be large enough that they cannot physically be swallowed, and even then the dorado catfish's bulk and activity may stress or injure more placid species.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List upgraded Brachyplatystoma rousseauxii from Least Concern to Vulnerable in 2023, reflecting an inferred population decline exceeding 30% across three generations (approximately 12 years). The two primary drivers are commercial overfishing — the species aggregates in predictable locations during its spawning migration, making it highly vulnerable to targeted fishing pressure on adults — and habitat fragmentation by hydroelectric dams across the Amazon basin. Modelling indicates that projected dam construction is expected to eliminate around 37% of the species' occupancy area within the Amazon by blocking or degrading the migratory corridor.
The species was added to the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS) Appendix II in March 2024, recognising its status as a threatened migratory animal requiring international cooperative management. Conservation measures proposed or in place include seasonal fishing closures during peak migration, size limits, and restrictions on gear types, though enforcement across the enormous range remains challenging. The wild fishery for this species is significant in Brazil, Peru and Colombia, and the trade in juvenile aquarium fish draws on wild-caught animals — a secondary pressure that, while smaller than the commercial food fishery, adds to overall take. Aquarists should confirm the provenance of any fish before purchase and should not acquire animals they cannot responsibly house for the species' full life.
